3 Page 3 Accreditation Wrap-up! After more than two years of preparation by at least 150 faculty, staff and students, the accreditation review team from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities made its on-campus visit October In its preliminary report at the end of the visit, the team left South with six potential commendations for accomplishments and six potential recommendations for improvements, which would become part of the final report. South was commended for: n being highly collaborative, genuinely committed to the learning of their students and collectively determined to meet all challenges faced by the college. n creative and successful partnerships with community and industry. n transparent budgeting processes on campus. n commitment to evaluation and data-driven decision making. n effective educational support for its diverse student body. n the broad collaboration and effective planning that have supported the new baccalaureate program. The recommendations include these: n identify program outcomes which differentiate between certificate and degree programs. n Changes in materials for students about advising support. n Hire full-time faculty for each field of major work, after finding one program with only part-time faculty. n Make changes to computer equipment and website. n work with the District Office to publish the individual college budget in addition to the aggregate District Budget. IN THE NEWS Links to the following articles may be found in News & Press on South s website. South s Continuing Education classes were featured in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine. South s WorkSource partnership with Seattle Public Library to provide job search classs will benefit from a new Gates Foundation grant. The news was covered by KUOW. I think it would be fair to state that our commendations are truly significant, campus-wide in scope and speak to the degree to which we are successfully meeting our mission and goals, said Interim President Gary Oertli in announcing the preliminary findings to the campus. The recommendations are easily correctable, as commented by the chair of the evaluation team, Oertli said. My goal is to address the recommendations as quickly as possible. The accreditation steering committee will meet in a few weeks to review our accreditation process and to discuss the evaluation team visit and findings. The committee would appreciate hearing your reactions to the process and the evaluation team commendations and recommendations. Your feedback is anonymous, and findings will be shared at the accreditation steering committee debriefing session. Please respond to the questionnaire by Tuesday, November 10. Access it at: Former Student News From Kathie Kwilinski: Yuya Aoyagi (Class of 2003) transferred to the UW and finished his BA in Aerospace Engineering/Aerodynamics & Design. On return to Japan, he worked for General Electric and, after two years, transitioned to Toshiba Co. in Yokohama where he works as a design engineer. He sends his respects to all teachers and advisors he encountered at South, and especially to Mike Steffacin and Heidi Lyman. Once again, thank you very much for all your support and help while I was a SSCC student. My time as a student at SSCC really shaped not only the academic knowledge, but also the discipline and my personal character to go through any of the challenges I have faced until now and future challenges I may still face. Yuya was a memorable individual when he was here and it was delightful to hear of his success and fondness for South.

Leonard Williams Custodian Leonard previously worked at South as an hourly custodian in 2008, and has also worked at Popeye s Restaurant and Safeco Field. We re happy to welcome him back. CAmPus Security Reports October 8 A student reported his car was stolen from the North Lot. Seattle Police were called and took over the case. The vehicle was recovered the next day in the South Park area, missing wheels and other items. October 13 Three witnesses, including faculty and staff, observed one young man verbally harassing another young man on the 125 bus. When all exited at the college stop on southbound 16th Ave. SW, the harassment continued, and the suspect may have knocked a binder out of the victim s hand. The witnesses intervened on campus and convinced the suspect to leave the area. Neither man, presumed to be students, was willing to provide identification. October 15 Security was told that on the previous day one student became upset with another student in the Diesel shop and pulled out a pocket knife during the disagreement. After an interview, the Vice President of Student Services suspended the knife wielding student until a Student Conduct Hearing could be held. October 19 A student told Security that his girlfriend s car had possibly been stolen from the North Lot. A review of parking lot video showed a similar vehicle driving off the lot. October 27 Security was told that two trucks in the commercial driver training fleet were vandalized with graffiti, apparently over the previous weekend. October 30 A carry on size suitcase was left unattended in the library in the morning, and it became a matter of concern by midday. Campus Security was called, who then called Seattle Police. The police bomb squad was called in. The Library and the Robert Smith Building were evacuated while the bomb squad investigated the suitcase. The suitcase contained clothing and other personal items. Campus buildings were reopened about 1:45 p.m. A student returned for the belongings about 6 p.m. Tom Tower, the happy Readerboard maker!

7 Page 7 Gaining Momentum South is shifting to momentum points as a primary tool for measuring student success. According to Mark Mitsui, vice president of Student Services, momentum points can be compared to miles per hour. If students can move along the education highway at a faster rate, it is more likely they will reach their goal. But if their momentum is slow, the delay factor makes it less likely they will reach the goal. Over the past three years the SBCTC has instituted the momentum point system for measuring student progress, using them as part of its funding formula for community colleges. The SBCTC Momentum Point report indicates that South showed impressive point gains over the past two years, and is up 28% (2,304 points) over the baseline year of The college increased in each category of momentum points: Basic Skills + 49% College Readiness + 34% First 15 College Credit + 15% First 30 College Credits + 30% Math + 5% Completions + 50% Auto Collision student Hance Edwards restored and customized this 1953 Chevy car hood that is now displayed in the program office. Part of these increases may be attributed to improving the accuracy of the point totals. And part of the increases is due to new strategies and the good work our campus does on a daily basis to help our students succeed. Watch for an upcoming Student Success enewsletter with more detail, or contact Mark Mitsui at Green Expo The Puget Sound Industrial Excellence Center (PSIEC) at the Georgetown Campus hosted the second annual Green Industrial, Business and Career Expo. The event featured exhibits, demonstrations, and presentations focusing on clean energy, technologies, and markets; the 21st century auto shop and alternative fuels car project; and educational pathways to green-collar career employment. Pictured is Liza Hodgins in an electric Tesla Roadster. FACS The AANAPISI grant sponsored two Family Actions for College Success (FACS) sessions that provided families of South students with tools they can use to help their student succeed in college.

Use hand sanitizer after touching handrails, elevator buttons, door knobs, shared computers, etc. Be a Flu Fighter! Eighteen South students volunteered at the West Seattle Food Bank on October 12. The project was sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, South s Honor Society. Students helped sort over 1,000 lbs of food, which will assist nearly 200 families in our communities. Jack Wagstaff, manager at the Food Bank, also discussed the non profit s mission and the operations of eliminating hunger.

9 Page 9 Endangered Species (for Tara Hardy) by Michael G. Hickey before John James Audubon learned to fence or dance before he learned to ride horses or play violin & long before he cultivated his obsession to paint every bird in North America he had a conversation with his heart one night he sat across the table from it not a dream of it, not the idea of it but an actual human heart -- his heart which had emerged from his chest & sat facing him even as it leaked red on the dining room floor even as the arteries & capillaries wriggled into position to catch every scrap of the ensuing debate young J.J. knew it was a discussion to be embraced, not feared yes, he said, I know you will pump blood to every hamlet in the geography of my body yes, I know you will suffer heartache, heartbreak, even heart attack with every girl who looks your way & smiles with her eyes & yes I know absence will make you grow fonder all the while the heart perched itself, removed & indifferent smug, unable to be reasoned with but soon that heart would climb back inside the chest of John James Audubon & beat like the wings of a hummingbird a calliope hummingbird native to North America weighing 2.5 grams, metallic green back & crown white gorget with purple rays, erected to show a whiskered effect when courting the female calliope hummingbird while trying to protect the species from extinction from the pain of losing the last lover on Earth that could ever really love him back English instructor and Seattle Poet Populist Mike Hickey gave a reading at the Seward Park Audubon Center as part of their Northwest Authors Lecture Series. He was the Series first poet and wrote a special Audubon poem for the event. He also performed on the Poetry Stage at Seattle BookFest on October 24, and is a judge for the November 13 America SCORES 7th annual Poetry Slam for elementary school students. Hey, who s the turkey? Let us hear a gobble gobble out of you!
