Student Updates - On Thursday, January 18, members of Spencerport High School s Service Learning Internship Program (S.L.I.P.) volunteered at St. Peter's Soup Kitchen. The kitchen is located on Brown Street in the city of Rochester. St. Peter's has been in operation for 35 years and members of SLIP have been volunteering with them for the past nine years. The morning was spent prepping the day s meal which included a fresh chopped garden salad, rice and beans, corn, and chicken. Senior Joelle Vitale summed up the day, "It was a busy, busy day but we all were proud of our accomplishments and everyone seemed very grateful for our efforts." Members of SLIP will continue to work with staff at St. Peter's on a variety of community based activities. - On Tuesday, January 23, Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo proclaimed the month of January as National Mentoring Month. The ceremony took place at the County Executive Building on Main Street. During the ceremony, the County Executive made a special point to recognize the CHOICES program at Spencerport High School. Seniors Jamie Briggs and Natalie Wiebeld were selected to represent the program and shared the great work they have done in CHOICES. Jamie and Natalie have been in CHOICES for the past two years and both are in the Service Learning Internship Program (SLIP). After the ceremony, the students had an opportunity to talk with the County Executive, and update her on the work being done in CHOICES and SLIP. 2
- Math Madness Competition: During this year s Uber Bowl for Math Madness, students competed on line with students nationwide working on challenging math problems. The results from the Uber Bowl will not be known for two weeks; but regardless of the final results, congratulations to all of our students who participated. A special thank you to Mrs. McGreevy who serves as the advisor for this club. 3
- Junior Lyndsay Boscarino received the Fine Art Studio Award from the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences for her digital photograph entitled Privacy (below). This is a picture she took while on our field trip to the George Eastman Museum in the fall. To check out other pictures, you can get to the web site by entering this address: STUGO Assembly: - As referenced in the sent by Katie Wyant last Tuesday, January 23, Student Government (STUGO) has arranged a great opportunity for our school. Houston Kraft, a nationally recognized speaker, will be visiting our school on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, to present a school-wide assembly in our East Gym. We apologize for the relatively short notice of this event; however when this opportunity presented itself, it was simply too good to pass up. The focus of Mr. Kraft s work with our school community will be Making Kindness Normal. There will also be an opportunity for our students in STUGO to work with him as a group prior to this assembly. You can find more information about Houston Kraft by visiting his web site: We are asking that if possible, teachers/staff members sit with students in the bleachers to help support the 4
message from Mr. Kraft. It should be noted that because of the fund raising efforts of STUGO, this event will be paid for by them! So kudos to our students, Mr. and Mrs. Wyant for their leadership of STUGO, and everyone who supports these student leaders of our building. For this assembly we will follow the schedule below: Schedule for Wednesday 2/14/18 We will have a modified schedule on this day to accommodate the assembly at the end of the day. All movement for the assembly will be by announcements. Please do not release students unless an announcement has been made. Morning announcements and the pledge will take place at the end of 1st block. Period Time Length 1 7:25 8:35 a.m. 70 minutes 2 8:40 9:50 a.m. 70 minutes 3 and Lunch 9:55 11:40 a.m. 105 minutes 4 11:45 a.m. 12:55 p.m. 70 minutes Assembly 1:00 2:05 p.m. 65 minutes Period Time Period Time Period Time 3a (lunch) 9:55-10:25 a.m. 3a (class) 9:55-10:30 a.m. 3a (class) 9:55-3b (class) 10:30-3b (lunch) 10:35-11:05 a.m. 3b (class) 11:05 a.m. 3c (class) 11:40 a.m. 3c (class) 11:10-11:40 a.m. 3c (lunch) 11:10-11:40 a.m. ** Please note our plan to have assembly end at 2:05 and to dismiss students so they have time to exit the gym and can go to their lockers etc. prior to buses departing. Upcoming Faculty Meetings 2/6: We will meet in the PAC. Jody Wyant will be providing an update from the STA on the First Book challenge. Students who are part of DASH2CHANGE will also be providing the faculty an update on their work. Steve Lysenko and Joe DiTucci have been working with this great group of student leaders and it will be great for all of us to hear about their efforts so far this year. 2/27: We will continue our digital conversion work with ISTE standards. Same format we have followed so far this year where faculty members sign up for the session they would like to attend. Please plan on this lasting until 3:20. 3/13: We will meet in the PAC. Please plan on this meeting lasting until 3:30. Erin Hassall will be presenting to the faculty on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their potential impact on student learning. 5
Graduation Class of 2018: Tim O Connor As we begin the second semester, I would like to invite everyone to save the date for the 2018 graduation ceremony. The Class of 2018 will be recognized on Friday, June 22, 2018, at 7:00 p.m., and the ceremony will take place at the SERC on SUNY Brockport s campus. Please consider joining us for this important event. More information will be made available in the coming months. Academic Workshop reminder: Jennifer Placito Our new format for academic workshop is going great! I would like to remind teachers however that they should be filling out a signup form that can be found in the folder for Academic Workshop under the faculty meeting course in Schoology. This is a very important step that needs to be completed so the teachers who are working in Academic Workshop know who to expect. Field Trip update All of the field trips over 50 miles that were submitted to me for school board approval were approved last week by the school board. Please remember the following when planning your trips for next year: 1) All overseas trips need to have travel insurance included in the cost. 2) For any overnight trip, there needs to be a plan in place for supervision of students at night. Either hotel security needs to be arranged to be in the hallways or there needs to be proctors in place to supervise hallways to ensure student safety. 3) A parent meeting must be arranged with me (Sean McCabe ) so I can review expectations for the trip related to the Code of Conduct. If I cannot attend the meeting, one of the Assistant Principals will. 4) All required forms must be completed by students and parents. This includes our medical form and the Code of Conduct agreement. 5) Approval for chaperones not employed by the Spencerport Central District should have be given by me prior to 12/22/17. If this has not occurred, please contact me as soon as possible. Principal s Message I hope everyone had a great weekend. It is hard to believe we are half way through the school year! I would like to thank Jackie Nentarz and Aurora Brannigan-Fromm once again for all of their work in organizing the wellness activities many of us were able to take part in on Friday morning. Also, a big thank you to everyone that volunteered to facilitate the various wellness sessions that were offered. It was a great way to start the day, and we will certainly look for other opportunities to do this in the future. I would also like to thank everyone for the great dialogue that took place later in the day surrounding our grading philosophy. I was able to sit in with the Social Studies department and really enjoyed the conversation that took place. If you did not have an opportunity to do so, I would encourage everyone to watch the video that was included in the resources provided by Kristen Paolini (Rick Wormeli Resource # 2). We began our discussion in our Social Studies breakout session by watching this video, and it generated a lot of great discussion. We will continue to revisit this discussion/topic throughout the remainder of the year. 6
I hope that each of you has a great rest of the week. As always, please feel free to see me with any questions, concerns or comments. All the best! Sean 7
