MONDAY MORNING Greetings from 2011President Stephen Coffey MEMO APRIL 2011 Volume 55 Issue 4 Missouri Jaycees, what can I say? You have done it again! For the third month in a row our state achieved positive membership growth! I cannot thank each of you enough for all of your hard work. We still have a lot of time ahead of us this year and have many goals to accomplish. It is evident that you not only have put some great plans in place but that you are working them. We are a strong state with a great team and we will continue to be successful all year long and hopefully for years to come. This past month we had the awesome privilege of working with a couple of our struggling chapters, the O FALLON JAYCEES and the UNION JAYCEES. We were able to help them pull themselves out of Red Chip status and I am happy to report that both chapters have a clear plan and are recruiting new members almost daily. We fully expect to see both of these chapters running some great projects this year. I have also seen some really excellent plans for some of our other struggling chapters and I am anxious to see the positive outcome of those plans. If your chapter finds itself slipping from a healthy, active chapter size or you are having trouble activating members, please let us know. This team is fully dedicated to helping every member and every chapter achieve the goals they set for themselves this year. With that said, I had mentioned before in a previous article that I would like to encourage you to always be evaluating your plan in order to help you stay on track. We have some big events on our radar so please check the state website ( for information on all of our upcoming events. We update the calendar as we receive the information from you. There will also be flyers for some of our larger events. You will also see promotional items for our state projects and will find information about these fundraisers and the memorabilia they are offering. I encourage you to please contact us if you need any training at all in your chapter. This training can be from fun and social trainings to more serious and business focused training. We can help steer you down a path that will ensure your members will be getting the most for their Stephen Coffey 90th State President

membership. So, please give us a chance and believe in yourselves and we will make great things happen! This month will be the final push for successfully completing the first trimester. I encourage each of you to evaluate your chapter plans and see what you need to do in order to finish strong. Use your resources and remember that there are many Jaycees across the state that are here to support you. I look forward to seeing how many of you finish this trimester strong and I am hoping that we have much to celebrate in Kansas City next month at the Spring State Meeting. Good luck and have fun! Stephen Coffey Stephen Coffey, 90 th President No Day But Today! COB Paul Myers Missouri Jaycees, we are on an awesome roll. We have had growth in each of the first three months. That is something to truly celebrate and I can t wait to see as many of you as possible at the state meeting coming up in May. I did want to send out Kudos to the Mexico Jaycees for hosting what was a fantastic Region meeting. They had two very important guests come speak, Mexico Jaycee Rooster and former Governor and U.S. Senator, Kit Bond, and Steve Hobbs, who is currently the Audrain County Commissioner and former State Representative. They both gave excellent talks on leadership and even answered some questions on our current affairs going on around the world. It was wonderful to not only hear about leadership from some distinguished speakers but also see how the Jaycees have impacted these individuals on their roads to becoming who they are today. Going back to the state meeting, we are going to have some excellent training going on that weekend and everyone should take advantage of it. I wanted to promote my training early and hope that it will encourage you to attend as it should be very educational. Sneak Attack - Are you at risk of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest? Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is expected to be the number one cause of death worldwide by Nearly 2300 Americans die each day to this. There are ways to help prevent it but also find out what your risk level is. This affects us all. Even pediatricians are starting to perform routine checks on patients over the age of 14 to start evaluating their degree of risk. This training is not only for our active Paul Myers Chairman of the Board 2

Jaycee members, I encourage any Senators to attend that want to learn more.. Paul Myers Paul Myers Chairman of the Board 2011 Vice President Lori Flax The weather is warming up outside and so are the events that the Missouri Jaycees are holding. If you're looking for something to do on the weekends, go to the calendar at and see if a chapter is holding an event that you could attend. Chapters always need extra help when holding an event. Better yet, grab 2 of your Jaycee friends and get a visitation out of it. It's always nice to be able to see how other Jaycee chapters work at their events. Don't forget that Blue Chip requirements state that the first quarter evaluation of your chapter plan are due this month so make sure to get them sent to Joe Jerkins ASAP. The Missouri Jaycees Spring Convention is just right around the corner. Please mark your calendars for the weekend of May I will personally be conducting a training "Capturing History" and want as many of you to attend as possible. Please bring 6-8 pictures (that you do not mind leaving) from your chapter events and come find out how to turn them into masterpieces. Until we see each other again, remember, that if you need anything give me a call or me at lorijaycee@yahoo.com. Lori Flax Lori Flax State Vice President 2011 Lori Flax State Vice President Vice President Jennifer Garrett Greetings, everyone! Congratulations, Missouri chapters, for once again helping the state to get to growth for March! Please see the rest of the Monday Morning Memo for those chapters that grew in the month of March. I want to give a special shout out to our region directors and our district directors. They are Brandon Heinz, Scott Tate, Amanda Goon, Kristen Nava, Melanie Wetter, Nathan Barger and Nicole Buckley. Without them taking the time to call each chapter every month, our jobs would be so much harder. They are here to work for your chapter, so please take time when they call to let them know how they can help you. 3

Over the next week or so, the region directors will be calling their chapters, asking you who in your chapter has been an outstanding Jaycee for the first trimester. Please take some time to let them know who in your chapter has helped you achieve your goals so far this year. Who in your chapter has taken the lead and chaired a new project? Or, who has been on fire recruiting new members for your chapter? We want the chance to recognize these special members at our state meeting in Kansas City. This would be a great reason to come to the meeting to see your chapter recognized! This year has been outstanding so far, let s make sure our members are recognized. Our summer projects are fast approaching. Remember that we are limited only by our own fears and doubts. Don t be afraid to take chances and reach for the moon. I have had the privilege again this year to be a national book judge and I am always amazed at what Jaycee chapters can and do accomplish every year. We are truly the best organization in the world! See you in my travels. Jennifer Garrett Jennifer Garrett State Vice President 2011 Jennifer Garrett State Vice President Vice President Julie Morff Missouri Jaycees, don t you just love this warm weather? Well, I sure do I could move somewhere where it was warm all the time. There are two major problems I see with this warm weather: problem #1, it makes me want to be outside all the time and problem #2, no one will pay me to do my job outside. So since I can t be outside or do my job outside, I decided to write my MMM article today. I have decided that I am not going to make you read the same thing over and over this month. I have summer fever and I am going to make this quick and painless. I must touch on membership. Yeah, I know membership, membership, membership! But without it, we will cease to exist! I am going to congratulate all those chapters on their successful M-Nights (St. Peters), socials (St. Charles), and members recruiting members (Casey- Joplin) so let s keep up the good work. Summer is the best time to run fun projects and get new people involved. Find out what a new member likes to do and help them run a project. When that one member brings in another, that one brings another and the cycle continues. Only then will we have healthy sustainable chapters so lets get to work and make this a summer to remember. Next, I implore you all to write an article, send a picture, recipe, project idea, or a brief synopsis of your upcoming events to Sam & Martha Mazzola (mms5e7@charter.net). It is vital that your chapter be a part of the state newsletter! We all want to see others impacting this state and 4

don t you want to show-off your members? Well, sit down and take 15 minutes out of your day, or better yet have a write up at a meeting. Give everyone a piece of paper and ask them to write about what the Jaycees have given them or maybe what is their favorite thing about the Jaycees or your chapter. Collect them and submit them. Maybe your members do not want their articles submitted, if not publish a chapter article. Take those write-ups (oh yeah, that s POC points), compile them into one chapter article titled Chapter XYZ members favorite things about being a Jaycee, then make bullet points highlighting what your members wrote. See how easy that would be to accomplish! And as I mentioned, you just got POC points for the write up & also for submitting your articles for the IMPACT. Really, the IMPACT is a great way for us to acknowledge and communicate to chapters so help us and submit your stuff. Well, the fever is getting worse so I will wrap up by saying I hope this warm weather means you all will be running some fun projects, which will bring in some new prospects. So as a friendly reminder, please submit your calendar of events to Joe Jerkins as soon as you can. You never know who may show at your event! Thank you for all you do to make this organization a success and let your state team know if we can do anything for you. P.S. Don t forget to register for Spring State Meeting in Kansas City Julie Morff Julie Morff State Vice President Julie Morff State Vice President Vice President Trisha O Cheltree Hello, Missouri Jaycees! Three months in a row of growth! We are on our way to becoming a much healthier organization. I am amazed by what we can accomplish together when we put our minds to it! Keep up the great work. I would like to thank a few chapters that worked extra hard the last 24 hours of closeout. Thank you to President Sam Smith (Warren Co.), President Missy Niedenfuehr (O Fallon) and President Matt Smith & Melanie Wetter (St. Charles). I also want to thank all of you for working so hard these past three months. You all are amazing people and I have truly enjoyed getting to know you! Reminder that the first deadline for the Parade of Chapters program is quickly approaching! Your submission can be turned in on line or through the mail. The deadline is April 20th. I am so excited to see who will be number one!!! In the past few weeks I have visited the Jefferson City Jaycees for a successful M-night. They played some games, ordered pizza and then we went cosmic bowling. They signed three members that night. Thank you to Jeff City for their hospitality. You all always make me feel welcomed. I also

attended the Region 2 meeting, hosted by the Mexico Jaycees. They had two guest speakers, Kit Bond and Steve Hobbs. Thank you President Josh Hanley and DD Jennifer Wilburn for the great meeting and hospitality as always! I also attended the Region 9 Meeting, hosted by the Fulton Jaycees. It was a beautiful day to be outside and conduct a meeting. Thank you to the Fulton Jaycees for the great food and to RD Amanda Goon for a great meeting. Get ready for the upcoming State Meeting!! Mark your calendars to be in Kansas City May 13-15th. We have a lot of accomplishments to celebrate and it s a great chance to meet other Jaycees and share ideas. I will be doing training on how to successfully run a Membership night. I really want to see a packed room! We will be getting ready to head into the busy summer months, so this information will be useful. Hope to see you there! Once again, we have shown that Missouri Jaycees can and will grow this year! Keep the excitement, fun and determination for this state to be the best of the best going! After all, there is NO DAY BUT TODAY! Trisha O Cheltree Trisha O Cheltree State Vice President 2011 Trisha O Cheltree State Vice President Access Day at the Missouri State Fair- August 19, 2011 Access Day at the Fair will be upon us before we know it! For those of you who have never been to Access Day at the Fair, this is a day we invite residents from our communities who have mental and physical challenges to be our guests for the day at the Missouri State Fair. Once they arrive they are brought into an air conditioned building where we provide them entertainment such as clowns and a DJ. Then we serve them lunch before they venture out to the fair. Many of our guests like to see all the animals, some like to see the talking car at the Highway Patrol booth, some like to ride rides, and some just like to walk around and look at everything. At the end of the day, we help them get back on their buses to go home. The State Fair may not seem like a big deal to you anymore, but most of our guests live in institutions and this might be the only day all year that they are able to get out and about. They think that a day at the fair is so much fun. They will tell you at the end of the day that they don t want to leave and go home. I promise this event will touch a soft spot in your heart. 6

However, in order for us to give our guests this special day, we need your help, Missouri Jaycees. We pay for everything from their admission into the park, the food, and many other expenses. The last few years it has cost us in excess of $8,000 to provide this special day for our guests. But we don t just need money from your chapters we also need man/women power. So we need YOU to be there to help sack lunches, deliver lunches and drinks, register our guests, register the Jaycees, man water stations throughout the fairgrounds, help our guests on and off their buses, and we need volunteers to chaperone our guests around the fair if requested. So PLEASE consider helping us with both monetary donations and man/women power. Don t forget, you also get POC points for your donations & for working the event. CAN we count on you and your chapter to help us out in 2011? If so please, send your donations in now to Joe Jerkins at the State Service Center, 222 Dunklin Street, Jefferson City, MO Thank you all for helping this WONDERFUL cause to provide an enjoyable day for our guests! Parade of Chapters Hello, Missouri Jaycees! I hope everyone is doing well. This year is flying by so fast, I can t believe that April is upon us and you all know what that means. First Trimester deadline is fast approaching, only a couple more weeks until all packets are due. Parade of Chapters (POC) is a great tool to guide you and your chapter, also to help keep you focused on all the small things that help you build a stronger "Family". This is a very easy way to earn you and your chapter recognition. You all are already doing all the things that are listed on your POC list. All you have to do is print out the slips, fill it out and turn it in. How easy is that? If I have said it once, I have said it a million times. We cannot do it alone! Everyone has to work together as a team, as a "Family" and put all differences aside to bring Missouri back to the top where we all want to be and deserve to be. If there is anything anyone needs please feel free to pick up the phone and call me or send me an . If I cannot answer your question I will find someone who can. This is going be a great First Trimester for POC I have no doubt and I need all of your UNIQUE items to make that happen. President Stephen and his team are working very hard to make this year a success and we need everyones help to make that happen. He will be giving extra points for the most UNIQUE items that I receive. There will also be some "TWISTS" that will earn your chapter extra points. So make sure you are visiting other chapters and getting things signed, and "stealing items that can earn you BIG POC points. There is NOTHING that I will turn away. (Maybe) We live out in the Jessica Hicks Parade of Chapters Program Manager 7

country and have had turkey, quail, chickens, ducks, rabbits and many other animals out here. How great would it be to have your chapter recognized at year end? I have no doubt that ALL chapters are going to be flooding my and mail box with all of their wonderful unique items over the next couple weeks. I am looking forward to seeing what every chapter will be sending me. Remember, if there is anything that any of you need, please call me and we will get it taken care of. One last reminder -- ALL POC PACKETS but be post marked by APRIL 20th. Jessica Hicks Jessica Hicks POC Program Manager Wonderland Camp It is finally April and you know what that means, it is Wonderland Camp Work Weekend time! I am excited and looking forward to seeing many of you in the upcoming weeks. This is a friendly reminder that the Corps Work Weekend is April 8-10 and the All Region Work Weekend is April If you would like more information about registering or the cost, please contact me as soon as possible. The work weekends are a great opportunity for the Missouri Jaycees to contribute to Wonderland Camp. Obviously, we have a ton of work to do this month. We have some construction projects in addition to the normal tasks that need to be completed prior to Camp opening for the campers. There is a large work list that needs to be completed and I assure you that there is something for everybody. Work weekends are an awesome opportunity to contribute to the success of the Camp as well as renew or establish friendships with our fellow Jaycees from across the state. I want to remind everybody to bring wish list items to the work weekends. Camp is in need of these items so please look at the list and see what your chapter could possibly bring with you. I know several of our chapters are collecting these items at chapter meetings. I would be more than happy to even travel to you and visit a chapter meeting at any time to collect these items so please make sure you continue to collect them throughout the year. During the All Region Work Weekend we will be having a very interesting tournament for chapters to participate in. I am asking that teams of 2 bring $50.00 worth of wish list items as an entry fee. There will be prizes for all who participate and I can assure you that we will have a great time. 8

I want to offer a friendly reminder that the Missouri Jaycees have been charged with the task of repairing the trail that the campers take down to the lake. I am asking that chapters claim a section of the trail to sponsor the repair work. I know that working together we can complete the revitalization of this beautiful nature walk down to the lake. If you would like to contribute or like more information please contact me. I will have the 2011 Wonderland Camp Gear at both work weekends so please come see me and support this awesome fundraiser for the Camp.
