1 Moberly Area Community College September 14, :30 p.m. Multi Media Center The Moberly Area Community College Global Education Committee met on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 in the Multi Media Center Members Present: George Mummert Laird Okie Joyce Pauley Greg Pauley Felicia Leach Pam Woods Sue Nugent Steve Voss Kana Tomita (student representative) The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman. She welcomed all new GEC members. Joyce Pauley was appointed secretary for the fall, 2005, semester. Steve Voss and Laird Okie were selected to serve as co-sponsors of the Multi-Cultural Student Club. The welcoming reception for MACC International Students was set for Monday, October 3, 2005 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Graphic Arts/Fine Arts Gallery. The list of this year s International students was distributed. It does not include permanent residents of the United States. However, the reception is open to all students and faculty members are encouraged to announce the reception in classes. The Missouri Community College Association Annual Convention will feature MACC in the opening ceremony. The theme will be Global Education at MACC. International students have been asked to participate and to provide traditional clothing, but theatre students will also be involved. Although several costumes have been acquired, many more are needed and several faculty agreed to talk to the international students in their classes, as well as at the reception. Joyce Pauley will need final information regarding students and costumes by October 10, 2005.

2 Students participating will travel from MACC the afternoon of Wednesday November 2, and will return that evening. They will be taken to dinner after the ceremony. It was suggested that international faculty should participate in the parade of nations and Pam Woods said that she would ask about that possibility. International Education Week was discussed. It will be held the week of November 14-18, Suggestions were to increase attendance by: Providing activities during sessions like Language lessons Dance lessons Making international foods Foreign films (short) It was also suggested that activities take place in the Blue Room, a more central location than the Ambassador Room, and that the doorway be decorated to bring students in. The lunch hour still seems an appropriate time, but perhaps the hour can fluctuate between 11:00 and 1:00 so that all students could be available. George Mummert is considering having his Global Taste class project on the 18th to coincide with International Education week. It would also be nice to include off-campus sites in the event by providing even one session during the week. We will discuss possibilities with students at the reception. Rihab passed out copies of the MCCA newsletter and the Advocate to those who had not received them, and made available two books featuring Title IV grants, one on Latin America which had involved Gopal Krishna, and one on China attended by Mike Barrett. Additional agenda items were tabled until the next meeting which will be October 12, 2005 at 3:30 in the Multi-Media Center. 4 Discussion was held regarding International Education Week on off-campus sites. George Mummert will have a Global Taste on the Mexico Campus and Steve Voss will present (TBA) on the Kirksville campus. The GEC Committee Ethnic dinner out was discussed. 5 Moberly Area Community College November 7, :30 p.m. Multi-Media Center The Moberly Area Community College Global Education Committee met on Wednesday, November 7, 2005 in the Multi-Media Center. Members Present: George Mummert Laird Okie Greg Pauley Steve Voss Gopal Krishna Felicia Leach Pat Twaddle Sue Nugent Pam Wood Kana Tomita (student representative) The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman. International Education Week plans were finalized. The foreign film will now be shown on Tuesday, November 15 instead of Thursday, November 17 and International Jeopardy will be held on Thursday, November 17 instead of Tuesday, November 15. Discussion was held on putting a display advertising International Education Week in the display case in the front hall. It was decided to check and see if the display case was available and possibly set up the display on Friday, November 11. Pat Twaddle said she would put up a display in the Career Center. Chairwoman Sawah reminded members of the GEC Committee Ethnic dinner at The Thai Restaurant, located on Broadway Street, in Columbia on Monday, November 28, 2005, at 6:00 p.m. Greg Pauley announced the he and Joyce would like to host a party for all international students on December 15 from 5:00 7:00 p.m. in the Ambassador Room, possibly a carry-in dinner. More discussion and planning will be held at the next meeting which will be held on Monday, December 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the Multi-Media Center. 7 Moberly Area Community College December 5, :30 p.m. Multi-Media Center The Moberly Area Community College Global Education Committee met on Monday, December 5, 2005 in the Multi-Media Center. Members Present: George Mummert Greg Pauley Joyce Pauley Steve Voss Felicia Leach Jaime McGarvey Kana Tomita (student representative) The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman. Discussion was held on ideas to enhance attendance of the International Education Week for next year. Some of the feedback presented was on developing a better plan for promoting the event earlier than the week before it starts. Promoting the event should also be posted in all buildings on campus, with equal weight given to each location. Another part of the plan is to reserve the display case for decoration in the Main Building in advance. Other ideas presented were soliciting donations from businesses to use in the International Jeopardy game as prizes. Someone also suggested making Tuesday and Thursday events earlier in the day to encourage more participation (noon possibly?) Kana Tomita, our student representative and president of the Multi Cultural Student Club (MCSC), is graduating this semester. She discussed her replacement for both the MCSC and GEC. There will be two officers serving as co-presidents of the MCSC and will also be our student representatives on the GEC. These two students are: Feven Melake and Cristina Mittenzway. Joyce Pauley announced that she and Greg would be hosting a party for all international students on December 15 or 16 from 2:30 5:00 p.m. in the Ambassador Room. Every GEC member attending will be bringing a 2-liter bottle of soft drink and a carry-in food item. Kana will let everyone know later which day would work best for the international students (December 15 or 16) and will the committee members. 8 Moberly Area Committee College February 8, 2006, 3:30 p.m. Library Conference Room (LCR) Attendees: Felicia Leach, Sue Nugent, Pat Twaddle, George Mummert,, Steve Voss and Cristina Mittenzwey (student representative). Chairwoman called the meeting to order at 3:30 PM. 1. Chairwoman Sawah presented members of the committee with the opportunity to attend the MidWest Institute 13th annual conference on April 21-22, 2006 at Schoolcraft College, in Livonia (near Detroit), Michigan. The MidWest Institute for International/Intercultural Education (MIIIE) is a consortium for global education. MACC is a member of the MidWest Institute and has been for many years. 2. By majority vote, the spring semester social reception for MACC international students will be held on Wednesday, March 29 in the Fine Arts Gallery from 3:00 4:30 pm. Sawah will send invitation letters out to the international students by March 13 in order to give the students enough time to receive the letters before they go on spring break. 3. MACC s International Fair will be held for the fourth consecutive year on the same day as the Spring Fling, Wednesday, April 26, This year s International Fair is expected to be mostly organized by members of the Multi-Cultural Student Club (MCSC). The president of MCSC, Cristina Mittenzwey mentioned the possibility for introducing some new ideas to the International Fair this year. Some of the ideas she had seen in other fairs she had attended include a passport visitors of the fair could have stamped when they visit each country s booth and learn about it at the fair. This idea may get visitors excited about participating and the word would spread around about the International Fair. 4. The Multi-Cultural Student Club (MCSC) is planning several activities for the semester: visit another nursing home in Moberly, visit University of Missouri - Columbia as well as Columbia college campuses, go to another Cardinals game and visit the arch in St. Louis. George Mummert is organizing the Cardinals game and the arch visit in St. Louis, and both events will be held on May 13, Pat Twaddle reported that the Career Expo will be held on April 5, from 10am 2pm in the Activity Center. She encouraged the MCSC to have a booth set up that day at the event to advertise the club to other students. Mittenzwey will look into the arrangements needed for participation. 6. George Mummert reported on the progress towards adopting the Global Education

9 Certificate for fall He mentioned that the certificate has to go through one more Curriculum Committee meeting to be approved for fall Once the certificate has been approved, plans to advertise it should be implemented around spring registration. Mittenzwey suggested asking Greg Pauley if he could assign to his class the development of a brochure about the Global Education Certificate as a class assignment. 7. The Global Education Committee will decide on a date and restaurant to have our traditional semi-annual ethnic dinner. Submitted by,

10 Moberly Area Committee College May 3, 2006, 3:30 p.m. Library Conference Room (LCR) Attendees: Felicia Leach, George Mummert, Sue Nugent, Laird Okie, Greg Pauley, Joyce Riley,, Pat Twaddle, Steve Voss, and Kana Tomita (student representative). Chairwoman called the meeting to order at 3:30 PM. 1. Reflections on possible events/arrangements in the future. A suggestion was made to have a display and table at the beginning of the fall semester that advertises MCSC (Multi Cultural Student Club). Felicia will prepare flyers for that display for fall. At the table, there would be a sign-up list for MCSC and a schedule of meetings for the year. Another suggestion was made to include mention of MCSC on orientation day for students (Student Services would need to be notified of this.) A link to a web page for MCSC, visible on the main web page, would be very helpful. The MCSC web page would include information about it and a schedule of meeting dates for the year. Steve Voss, a co-sponsor of MCSC, said that Josh in the Multi Media Center would help in designing such a page, and photos of many global/international events would be obtained from Jaime who keeps that material. There was mention of getting other international students from other campuses involved somehow. 2. Laird Okie suggested forming a sub-committee next year to do the planning for the International Fair. Also, it was suggested to cancel the international student reception in the spring due to lack of participation, and focus efforts and resources on inviting international students to participate in the International Fair instead. 3. Greg Pauley suggested an organizational fair during the fall picnic that includes all the clubs on campus. Greg will talk to Dr. Grant about this. When this organizational fair takes place, we can think about moving the International Student Reception to that day to coincide with the fall picnic, where all other students on campus are involved as well. 4. Greg Pauley suggested incorporation an assignment for College Orientation class where students would have to attend an organizational meeting/event/club as a requirement. Students will be encouraged to attend a meeting of the MCSC or the GEC meeting. 5. The Global Education Certificate will be available for students to apply for this fall. George Mummert will offer a staff development workshop at the beginning of fall semester titled Global Education.

11 6. Jeenal Patel is one of our international students who died in a car accident earlier in the year. Mummert and Sawah will meet with his family this June to discuss what all parties would like to do to honor his memory. Some possibilities where having a brick in his name in the men s new dorm, plant a tree in his name, or a memorial rock garden. 7. George Mummert talked about his participation with the MidWest Institute conference he attended on behalf of MACC Global Education Committee. One of the displays he saw at the college hosting the conference was a display of flags from countries they have had international students from. Mummert suggested having such a display on MACC campus, possibly an atrium in the lobby of Andrew Komar where we display the flags of the countries we have had international students from. Embassies can be contacted regarding donating flags of the country for this purpose. Sawah will talk to Dr. Jorgensen on behalf of the GEC regarding this wonderful suggestion. This display would also make global education more visible to everyone on campus. 8. A suggestion was made to as Dr. Grant to mention the MCSC to international students when he contacts them before coming to campus, and then while they are at MACC. Sawah also mentioned inviting Dr. Grant to join the Global Education Committee next year. Sawah will discuss this with Dr. Grant. 9. A budget proposal will be developed over the next year for the Global Education Committee. We will be requesting a budget for the committee so we can expand on the global activities we help facilitate. In order to become more effective in spreading global awareness among our students, faculty and staff, and eventually be able to organize events large enough to invite the community for participation in, a budget has become a necessity for the committee. 10. Mummert set the date to go to the Royals baseball game in Kansas City. The game will be on May 20, and tickets are $12 each. The bus will leave campus at 10 am. Part of the trip is to visit the Nelson Art gallery in Kansas City. College will provide a bus for transportation, and Mummert reported that Dr. Jorgensen promised to have the bus and parking fees paid for by the college. Estimated arrival time back in Moberly is 12:30 am (after midnight). 11. The Multi-Cultural Student Club (MCSC) attended International Night at Central Christian College. The international club at the Central Christian College would like to get together with MACC MCSC to do some cultural activities together. The meeting concluded at 4:30 pm. Submitted by,
