For a healthy and well-balanced individual, one should focus on several areas. The key to wellness is balance. Its purpose is to increase faculty, staff, and student awareness of the various health-related programs and services available at USC that promote healthy lifestyle choices and help integrate and balance work, home, and school life. 3 MENS CREW The Club Sport program has over 50 active clubs that are organized and run by students. Clubs can be either instructional, recreational, competitive, or a combination of all three. Teams participate in leagues or organizations that operate under the direction of each sports national governing body. Club Sports The ultimate experience: Rec Sports and Me When I packed my bags to come to USC from Pennsylvania, I knew I would have to find some way to bring part of the east coast with me. Finding a sport to play in college seemed like the most obvious option. The lacrosse team was my first choice. My nervousness quickly faded as soon as I started passing the ball around with some of the girls. Within a few short weeks, I felt welcomed me into the Trojan family. The lacrosse team has become one of the best parts of my college experience. My life has always been better when it s busy, and sports have always been a key ingredient. Lacrosse feeds my competitive edge; my teammates and I thrive off of the excitement before games, the thrill of having a defensive stop, and the rush of scoring a goal. During my freshman season, I loved traveling to our games. The trips gave us the opportunity to play the best teams in our division and see other parts of California. Of course, long car rides provide an incredible chance for the team to bond. We have dominated some teams, won some nailbiters, and lost some heartbreakers. And through it all, the team has hung together and developed friendships that I believe will endure past our four years here. As a captain of the team, I have worked to ensure that our incoming players feel included in our own subset of the Trojan Family. DANCE Playing on the lacrosse team gave me an introduction into the administrative side of the club sports program. As a freshman, I was tapped to be the representative for our club to the Recreational Club Council. Serving on the executive board and now as President, I helped implement growth and positive change in the infrastructure and organization of the council. I have gained a new appreciation for work the behind the scenes. The RCC includes 55 clubs teams with over 2,500 student athletes. Our program is successful because of the dedicated club athletes and the staff that provide extensive support to us. As President, I hope to continue the improvements we ve worked on in the past years, as well as foster a positive relationship between all clubs and the council. 4 Intramural Basketball Champions Intramural programs are designed for the university community. Leagues and tournaments provide categories for all skill levels (beginning, intermediate, advanced, and open) in a variety of team and individual sports. Intramural sports are the perfect outlet for those athletes that are looking for the competition they found in high school. It offers a full season and playoffs for any sport you can think of. When my fraternity made it to the basketball semifinals two years ago, it brought me right back to high school. The gym was packed, the fans were loud, and the basketball was amazing. So if you are looking for the competitive feeling that you had with high school sports, intramurals can provide that. You don t have to be a high school star to play intramurals. We have beginner and intermediate levels for all of our sports, 5K Spring fun run INTRAMURAL SPORTS The IM Experience: Keeping the Competitive Edge because we want to offer the opportunity to learn a new sport to all students without them having to worry about their skill level. Our main goal is to get students active and bring them together. So if you are looking to try one of our many different sports, we can offer a great environment to learn something new. I got involved in intramurals first through playing with my fraternity. I had so much fun playing basketball and volleyball that it motivated me to get involved. I saw how special the program was and knew I wanted to get involved. I signed up as a referee. It was difficult at first but it ended up being the best on-campus job I could think of. From there I applied to be a Program Coordinator which is a more behind the scenes position. For the past year it has been one of my best experiences at SC. Now I spend the majority of my weeks around the Lyon Center preparing equipment and making schedules. One of the most valuable things I have learned since being a Program Coordinator is that intramurals bring people together. When I go to the games each week, I can see all of the teams coming together and improving. By the end of the season it is clear that these teams have developed an incredible bond. So if you are looking to get involved and make some great friends, intramurals a great choice. You won t regret it. Marc Lee, Junior Intramural Sports Program Coordinator B.S. Orientation information sessions are held during USC Welcome Week and the first week of classes. 5 USC Workout is one of the most popular programs at the Lyon Center that help meet the fitness needs of the USC Community. A semester fee covers over 40 different classes led by experienced aerobic instructors. Choose your favorite class or take a variety of styles to spice up your workout routine. trojan fitness Trojan Fitness programs consist of USC Workout (group exercise classes), Personal Trainers, Private Pilates sessions, and Massage Therapy. These programs and services are open to students, faculty, and staff. To meet your personal goals, you can set up a one-on-one session with a personal trainer or personal pilates instructor. Personal Trainers are capable of working with you in these areas: muscle toning, weight loss, exercise alternatives, weight gain, strength, flexibility, scheduling exercises, sport-specific training, and body mechanics. Personal Pilates instructors take individuals through a series of pilates exercises on the reformer and other apparatus to promote strength, muscle lengthening, core strength, and balance. Personal Trainers are also available for you and a friend at a reduced rate. Massage Therapy Massage therapists are available in personal treatment rooms at the Lyon Center. The benefits of Massage Therapy: reduces stress. relieves muscle tension, stimulates and energizes, increases blood circulation, increases range of motion, and enhances digestion. Open RecREATION Looking for a pick up game of basketball or open court time to enhance your skills? Rec Sports has scheduled time for OPEN REC in the North and South Gyms of PED, and the Main Gym of LRC. In collaboration with other departments and offices on campus, Rec Sports supports a variety of wellness programs and presentations covering topics such as physical fitness, stress management, spiritual and emotional exploration, fiscal fitness, sustainability, safety, health, and more. Sessions are open to students, faculty, and staff. To register for Trojan Wellness programs, classes, and workshops, go to: HPPS Resource room (university park health center 2nd floor) Health Promotion and Prevention Services Resource Room is a space where you can research on your own about nutrition, stress management, sexuality, exercise, fitness, self-image, and weight management. Peer Health Educators (PHEs) and counselors are available to answer your personal questions. The Resource Room is open Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm (closed on weekends and holidays) in the Student Health Center room 206. 7 World Famous USC Song Girls USC Spirit Leaders additional Programs MY USC EXPERIENCE: SPIRIT AND SPORTS As a born and raised Texan, the USC had not been one of the colleges supported by families and students around me. Dallas home were dominated by universities of the Big 12 and SEC. Needless to say, prior to my enrollment at USC, the rich tradition and prestige of the USC wasn t exactly innate. Although unfamiliar with the ways and conventions of Trojan spirit, I was seeking an opportunity to become a part of the action. I saw the Spirit Leaders, Song Girls and Trojan Marching Band at orientation and was excited about possibility of becoming a USC Spirit Leader. I knew from the time I went to a game at the Coliseum for the opening football game of my freshman year versus Ohio State that simply being a stadium fan of USC athletics would not be fully satisfying throughout my four years. I tried out to become a 2009 Spirit Leader and was lucky enough to be placed in the family. I choose the word family rather than squad or team because while I did expect a field pass to games at the Coliseum and an opportunity to cheer on the court of the Staples Center at the Pac-10 Tournament to be incredibly exciting, what I didn t expect was the camaraderie and friendships that would incite from my experience with Spirit Leaders. As a USC Spirit Leader, I ve had the opportunity to cultivate deep friendships with individuals from all walks of campus. Spirit Leaders are dynamic individuals who have a range of interests, friend groups, academic majors and backgrounds; it s for this reason, above all others, that being a part of the USC Spirit Leaders is so rewarding. From the Rose Bowl to March Madness to games played against cross-country rival Notre Dame, USC Spirit Leaders and Song Girls have the chance to support our athletic teams at home and away. The Trojan spirit is certainly no longer foreign to me and USC couldn t be more of a home as for my true home in Texas, you better believe there s a cardinal and gold flag flying from our porch. Tyler Miller, Junior, USC Spirit Leader Spirit Groups USC Song Girls The USC Song Girls are one of the most recognized spirit groups at USC. Traditionally they appear at all USC athletic sports events including football, basketball, volleyball, and other sports events (home and away). The USC Song Girls consist of women who provide spirit and support through various types of dance routines. They each have had extensive dance training in Jazz and ballet. Tryouts occur every October. For more information contact recsports@usc.edu Spirit Leaders One of the newest traditions at USC, the Spirit Leaders are an integral part of school spirit at all Trojan athletic events. The Spirit Leaders are a co-ed squad responsible for leading stadium wide chants and increasing crowd participation at Trojan football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, soccer, and baseball games. The Spirit Leaders work with the Trojan Marching Band and the Song Girls to create a winning atmosphere for all Trojan athletes. For more information contact recsports@usc.edu Traveler USC football games are famous for, among other things, the appearance of Traveler a noble white steed bearing a "Trojan Warrior" into the stadium. The Traveler tradition began in 1961 with Traveler I and continues today with Traveler VII. Aquatics Rec Sports provides a wide variety of aquatic activities including Recreational Swimming, Masters Swimming ( net/scaq), Lifeguarding Certification, Club Water Polo, and Swim Lessons. The McDonald s Swim Stadium, home of the 1984 Olympics, features a 25-yard dive pool, 50-meter competition pool, 2 outdoor Jacuzzis, a sauna, and locker room facilities. McDonalds pool is also home of the USC Men s and Women s Swim and Dive Team as well as the USC Water Polo Teams. Some of the special events held at the pool include Swim with Mike ( intramural innertube water polo tournament, Janet Evans Swim Invitational and the annual Dive-In Movie. The Indoor Pool, located in the Physical Education Building, features a 25-yard pool with locker room facilities. For more information, contact recsports@usc.edu Trojan Golf The Trojan Golf Club (TGC) connects students, faculty, staff, boosters, and alumni to a common interest of golf. The Club consists of members of various skill levels ranging from firsttime golfers striving to break 100, to experienced players firing for par. As an official affiliate club of the Southern California Golf Association, TGC members are provided with handicaps, entry to SCGA tournaments, and additional benefits. Student members are encouraged to participate on regularly scheduled club days. Club Days are designed with the intent to allow students to play together regularly at discounted rates at various Los Angeles area courses. For more information, go to: or scgolf@usc.edu Martial Arts Fall and Spring semester classes begin the second week of school and continue until the last day of classes. No classes during University holidays or final exam periods. Self-defense classes are available through the Physical Education Department, Center for Women and Men, and the Department of Public Safety. active martial arts disciplines include: Aikido Kung Fu Ninjitsu Tae Kwon Do Youth Sports NYSP Trojan Kidscamp NYSP Trojan KidSCamp is a summer program that introduces youngsters from economically disadvantaged areas to an instructional environment to inspire new ideas and personal goals. These children (9-15 years) become involved in a competitive sports program intended to motivate them toward self-improvement and self-awareness. For more information contact recsports@usc.edu After-School Sports Connection (ASSC) ASSC is a part of the overall USC Family of Five Schools (USC-FFS) community outreach effort which offers after-school sports instruction to students in third through fifth grades (8-11 years). 8 MEMBERSHIPS USC STUDENTS Your Lyon Center membership includes access to the Klug Family Fitness Center (weight room), basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts, climbing wall, McDonald's Swimming Pool, lounge chairs, putting green, table tennis, multi-purpose rooms, racquetball and squash courts, locker rooms, sauna, Jacuzzi, and cardiovascular equipment (upstairs and downstairs). It s EasY! Follow these guidelines to access lrc: 01. Complete the online waiver at least 24 hours prior to Lyon Center access: Bring your valid USC ID 03. Bring a lock to secure your belongings in the day-use lockers or for a rental locker 04. Be sure to have appropriate attire for your workout; Shirts and closed-toed shoes are required in the weight room for your health and safety 05. Food or beverages are allowed in the LRC lobby area only 06. Have a great workout! Online Waiver Required for students USC Faculty and Staff The Lyon Center is open to USC Faculty and Staff for a reduced membership fee. Year and semester rates are available. Membership includes access to the Lyon Center and McDonald's Swim Stadium. Locker rental, massage therapy, personal trainers, and group exercise program are available for a fee. Platinum membership includes LRC membership, full-length locker, and 10 day-passes. Gold Membership includes LRC membership, half-length locker, and 5 day-passes. USC Alumni and guests Year, Semester, Month, Week and Day memberships/ passes are available (see fee structure below) to USC Alumni and Guests. USC Alumni should present their USC Alumni Association card or USC Emeriti Center card. LRC application forms are available at the Lyon Center. Services Lockers & Towel Service Lockers are available for semester and yearly rental. All locker rentals include towel service. Day use lockers are available but not for overnight storage. Pro Shop Come visit the Lyon Center Pro Shop which is stocked with items you need to complete your workout. From socks, racquetballs, and swim goggles to weightlifting gloves, swim caps, and bottled water, the Pro Shop has something for every athlete. Special event rentals are available at the Pro Shop. For student organizations, departments, and other groups, the Pro Shop offers equipment such as dodge balls, football flags, cones, water jugs, team pennies, basketballs, footballs, etc. for retreats and department events. Outdoor Adventure Rentals (OAR) is located inside the Lyon Center and offers USC students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to rent tents, sleeping bags, coolers, back packs, lanterns, and other camping basics for a discounted price. Recreation Facility Reservations USC community groups can reserve recreation facilities for retreats, student films, special events, and sports competitions. Reservation forms and policies are available online at or call (213) Completion of an online waiver is required for access to all recreation facilities for all USC students (graduate and undergraduate). Students must complete the waiver at least 24 hours prior to access of facilities. Students under the age of 18 years must have a parent/guardian sign the waiver; allow 3-5 days for processing.
