2 HE BULLETin CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGE SAN BERNARDINO 1965 iilllhll * January 19, 1979 Distinguished Lecturer Series "ETHICS AND SIN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA," TOPIC OF NOTED COLUMNIST-LECTURER SEIDENBAUM A noted California-watcher, author and city-life interpreter will present his views on "Ethics and Sin in Southern California," at a lecture to be presented on campus Tuesday, January 30. Art Seidenbaum, Los Angeles Times book editor and former columnist,has been invited by the Distinguished Lecturer and Artist Committee and the CSCSB English Department. The lecture, free of charge and open to the public, will begin at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Creative Arts Building, rwote.- The location is changed from that listed in the winter Quarter Events Calendar.) Drawing from his 17 years as a columnist interpreting the Los Angeles scene for the Times, he is expected to present an objective evaluation of Los Angeles, from architectural and cultural perspectives, according to Raymond Prier, CSCSB English faculty member who is instrumental in arranging the lecture. In addition to his career as a columnist,for 10 years Mr. Seidenbaum served as moderator for programs on KCET, community television from Los Angeles. He received an Errniy Award in 1972 for "Citywatchers," a program co-hosted with Charles Champlin, Times entertainment editor. The latest of Seidenbaum's two books is "This is California Please Keep Out," published in His earlier book, "Confrontation on Campus," is a collection of Times articles on California colleges. In addition to the public lecture, Seidenbaum will meet with Dr. Prier's Humanities Class, "Moral and Ethical Values of Los Angeles," in a special afternoon session. * * * EMPLOYEE CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIAL SECURITY RAISED «* «The rate of employee contributions to Social Security (indicated as "Current OASDI" on the statement of earnings card attached to employee paychecks) was increased from 6.05 percent to 6.13 percent, effective with the December, 1978 warrants. The new wage base for the 1979 calendar year has an earnings limit of $22,900. The wage base for 1978 was $17,700,

3 TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT RATES ARE INQ^EASED Donald Sapronetti, Accounting Officer, has announced the following changes in authorized travel reimbursement rates, effective January 1, 1979: The total for each 24 hours is now $46, ($25 lodging; $3 breakfast; $5.50 lunch; $9 dinner; $3.50 incidentals). The maximum private vehicle mileage has been increased to 214 uer mile certification. Minimum rate remains at 174 (with certification) if a state vehicle is not available. The maximum private vehicle reimbursement for one-way travel to or from a common carrier (airport, depot, etc. ) has been increased to 424 pet mile with certification. FIVE UNIVERSITIES TO BRING RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM HERE A five-university research colloquium is scheduled to be held on campus Tuesday, January 23, A joint project between Schools of Administration and faculty from Claremont Graduate School, University of Redlands, University of California, Riverside, Cal Poly, Pomona and CSCSB, the event is inter-disciplinary and should be of interest to various academic areas. This marks the fifth such colloquium to be held, and the second time on the CSCSB campus. According to C. Charles Christie, Assoc. 4 VOLUNTEERS WHO SPEAK DIALECTS AND FOREIGN TONGUES SOUGHT A Language Sample Tape Library which, when developed, could have a 'bank of recorded samples of,,. foreign languages and dialects, as well as English dialects, is in the process of being developed by Ralph Carlson, Lect,, ng IS. The project is being funded by a minigrant awarded by the CSCSB Mini" grant on Improvement of and Innovations in Education Committee. Also planned are instructional tapes to assist in learning basic concepts o p ono ogy, especially contrastive study of the sound systems of different lan- ^ages or dialects. Students could drill themselves on phonetic alphabets or practice pronunication of the several languages taught at the College. Dr. Carlson is in need of volunteers who could give a couple of hours of their time to assist in scripting and recording a representative sample of their first language or home dialect.
