2 BULLETin # CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGE SAN BERNARDINO April 29, 1977 $10,000 NSF GRAKT The College has received a grant of $10,000 from the National AWAM)ED FOR WCMEN Science Foundation to conduct a Women in Science Career Work- IN SCIENCE PRPGRj^ shop for women students. One hundred-seventy-five first and second year students and fifteen counselors or faculty, all women, from two-year and four-year colleges in San Bernardino and Riverside counties will be invited to attend the workshop, scheduled for next Fall. The program will be aimed at exploring ways to attract women to and retain them in fields of science. The workshop is being developed by a groi^ of CSCSB faculty women under the direction of Florence Weiser, project director and Asst. Dean, Academic Administration,and part-time instructor in Chemistry. Other faculty involved in the workshop are Frances Berdan (anthropology), Gloria Cowan (psychology), Carol Goss (political science) Jill Kasen (sociology), Martha Kazlo (counseling), Sarojam Mankau (biology), Gaye Perry (Asst. Dean of Students), Ellen Taylor (biology), Lynda Warren (psychology). A * An Offer You Can't Refuse In addition to donating blood to the College reserve BLOOD bonors earn CHANCES AT DRAWINGS FOR CASH PRIZES which donors or their families may need some day, students and staff will have an extra incentive to participate in the May 5 Annual Blood Drive. The A.S.B. has donated a $50 cash prize to be awarded to the lucky student whose name is drawn from the list of student blood donors and the Staff Council has voted to contribute $25 to be awarded to the staff member whose name is drawn from the list of staff donors. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lower Commons. The entire College Community is urged to participate and give to the reserve blood fund which is maintained for the College for all faculty, staff and students and their immediate dependents. The College blood fund insures that all the blood '^fi^ded is available, free of charge. The current cost of blood is approximately $90 per pint, which makes the College fund invaluable in time of need. Her talk is part of a Department of Psychology Colloquium and will be followed by a discussion time. The event is open, free of charge, to the public and the College. A A A POETRYr ESSAY AND FICTION ENTRIES WIN WRITING CONTEST Prizes totaling $75 have been awarded to three CSCSB students, winners of the first CSCSB Creative Writing Contest, All are senior English majors. Lorena Loper won $25 for her essay, "The Tragic Irony of Lord Jim's Tragic Recognition." A poem entitled "Alone," submitted by Christie Heslep,won the poetry category and a $25 cash prize for the author. Quality, small edition books put out by western publishers are now on display on the third floor of the Library. The books were chosen for the Western Books Exhibit by the Rounce and Coffin Club, an informal Included in the exhibit are many handset type books, quality, small editions and one of all-rag handmade paper. A book on nature uses natural leaves for illustrations. The exhibit continues through June 17. PUBLICATIONS I Saro.iam Mankau (Biology) has an article in the current issue of ' Environmental Entomology entitled "Sex as a factor in the infection of Tribolium spp. by Hymenolepis diminuta." Much of the data for this manuscript resulted from a research project in her course in Parasitology. David Shichor (Sociology) was notified that his article entitled "Criminal Behavior among the Elderly: A Survey of the Arrest Statistics" (with Solomon Kobrin) will be published in Petersen, David M. (ed.) Special Offenders; Research Theory and Social Policy by Sage Publications, Inc.
