The opinions expressed are those of the editor and contributors and in no way reflect opinions of the Air Force Association of Canada or of the 404 K-W Wing, who jointly and separately assume no liability. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It is a great honour and privilege to have been elected to serve as your President for this next calendar year of the 404 Wing. I assure you, I will do my utmost to fulfill all my duties as your President and I will promote the 404 Wing at every opportunity. I want to congratulate all those who were elected or accepted appointments to 404 Wing Executive. I also want to thank everyone who accepted to act as a Chairperson for the various Wing Committees. I look forward to working with each of you as we commence a new and exciting year at the 404 Wing. I am open to discussing any ideas that any member may offer for the good of the Wing. I would also like to invite anyone who would like to volunteer to help out on any of the various committees or on any project to either speak to myself, a member of the Executive, or a Committee Chairperson. It takes all members working together to have a successful, vibrant Association, and we need your help. As I said the night of the election I believe our moto should be: Through team work to success. I want to thank our Past President, Donna Kuehl and her executive for their hard work and fine leadership over the past two years, and to Donna especially for all her assistance to myself as I assume the Doug Arnold position of President. I greatly appreciate your help. There have been several activities that carried on at the Wing over the summer; on Monday and Thursday, Bocce Ball on Thursday (weather permitting), Bob and his Jammers on Wednesday and on Friday lunches by Larry and his Mess Crew. I thank all those who organized and oversaw these events. The Wing also hosted a very successful Veterans Picnic in July. In order to host this picnic an additional horse shoe pit had to be created and thanks to Larry and his pit crew this was accomplished. Therefore we now have two horse shoe pits so if anyone is interested in organizing regular horse shoe competitions please let us know, we would love to see these pits being used on a regular bases. Unfortunately we also had some sad intervals over the summer when we lost three of our long time faithful Wing Members, Bill Bruce, Terry Bruce, and Wallace (Wally) Caughell who was the last living chartered member of the 404 Wing. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. They will be sadly missed. This is your Wing so please come out and enjoy the camaraderie of old and new friends and at the same time support the Wing. The Air Force Moto is; The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer. Per Ardua Ad Astra GENERAL MEETING NOTICE Meeting will be held Thursday, September 1 st, 2016 Meet & Greet 5:00 pm, Dinner at 6:00 pm Meeting starts at 7:15 pm
2 Page 2 Regular Features The Wing Ding September 2016 BATTLE OF BRITAIN Donna Kuehl The Battle of Britain waged from July to October 1940, it pitted a small group of fighter pilots from around the world against a far larger Luftwaffe. Their victory gave hope to the people of Great Britain and to other freedomloving nations. The airmen whom Prime Minister Churchill dubbed the few comprised 2,353 pilots and air crew from Great Britain and 574 from overseas. All flew at least one authorized operational sortie with an eligible unit of the Royal Air Force or Fleet Air Arm from July 10 to October 31 and were awarded the Battle of Britain clasp to the Star. Five hundred and forty-four lost their lives. Canadian Contribution A Royal Canadian Air Force squadron fought during the Battle; No. 1 (RCAF) Squadron, whose pilots were from both a regular force unit and an auxiliary unit, became operational on August 17, It was known as RCAF to distinguish itself from the RAF s No. 1 Squadron but in February 1941 it was designated 401 Squadron. Canadians also fought in the RAF s 242 (Canadian) Squadron, which was heavily, although not exclusively, Canadian. It was led by RAF Squadron Leader Douglas Bader. Many more flew with other RAF squadrons as well as Bomber and Coastal Commands providing support to operations to prevent the German invasion. An untold number served as groundcrew, keeping the fighters flying. The Battle of Britain would not have been won without the contribution of another Canadian: Max Aitkin, Lord Beaverbrook; he dramatically increased the production of fighters for the war effort. As the Battle of Britain ended, another key Canadian contribution to the war in the air was the first young pilots, observers and gunners [who] were emerging from the schools of the [British Commonwealth] Air Training Plan in Canada, says Leslie Roberts, author of There Shall be Wings.
