Alan was born in Stranraer and attended Stranraer Academy, leaving school in He studied History and Political Science at the University of Glasgow before winning a scholarship to further his studies at the University of Pennsylvania. After working for several years for the BBC, in 1990 he formed the independent television production company, Wark Clements & Co, with his wife Kirsty Wark. Since 2007, he has been Director of Content for STV.
