4 Jeff Balsam Memorial Scholarship Award Valley Athletic Association Monetary Awards ($500.00) 1 Male & 1 Female This award will be given to a senior student who has participated in Valley Athletic Association programs for a minimum of three (3) years. This award will be given to a student who shows leadership qualities, and possesses the ability to become an asset to their community. The Jeff Balsam Memorial Scholarship Committee in conjunction with Valley Athletic Association Complete standard application, as well as the separate Valley Athletic Association application. 1

Student must attend a postsecondary school full-time; 3. Student must be of good character; 4. Student must demonstrate traits of good citizenship on a regular basis; 5. If the above four (4) points are equal, participation in athletics at the High School will be considered. 1. 10 Jason D. Rubin Memorial Scholarship Award Celebrating Jason s Passion to Learn and Explore The Rubin Family and Tifereth Israel Synagogue Plaque and Annual Monetary Award $500.00) 1. Student should be attending college after their senior year of high school. 2. The winning student shall graduate in the top 15 percent of the graduating class. 3. Student must complete the standard essay and supplemental essay question. Supplemental Essay Question: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? 4. Sponsors will receive a financial statement acknowledging the allocation of the scholarship award to the recipient s college education. Presented to a senior student who meets the following criteria: 1. Senior AV student who demonstrates a strong interest in the AV program, and who goes above and beyond the requirements of the class. 2. Student who normally works behind the scenes and shows talent in the AV field. 3. Maintains 2.75 GPA or better. 22 Kiwanis Club of Bensalem Community Service Scholarship Award Kiwanis Club of Bensalem Township School District Monetary Award ($ ) Award is based on a point system. Points are awarded based on: 1. Volunteering more than 5 hours per week; 2. Students who have been recognized by other organizations for their efforts. For example, if he/she was ever given an award or had his/her name published in a third-party publication; 3. Students whose efforts have made a significant difference to their organizations. For example, someone who volunteers regularly in the community and/or who brings great public awareness to a specific cause; 4. Volunteers who hold a title or position of authority in an organization, but a title in which the volunteer is active. Not, for example, an honorary chairperson in which the volunteer just lends his/her name; 5. Students who have volunteered with a particular organization/s for a long period of time, or who have made great strides in an organization/s in a relatively short period of time. Will be attending a 4-year post-secondary institution majoring in Business or Computer Science, 3. Must be in upper half of class or accepted by a College; 2. Must submit an application; 3. Student must signify he/she will enroll in at least a two-year full-time day course in a school above secondary level. It does include business and nursing fields; 4. If student doesn t use it the year it is presented, scholarship goes to next in line according to the voting. Students are asked to supply the college information by mid-july and checks are then processed. 5. 28 Class of 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 Memorial Scholarship Classes of 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976 Monetary Award 1. This award shall be considered to be in recognition of outstanding participation and achievement in the area of extra-curricular activities at the high school. 2. Student must have been accepted to an institution of higher learning. 3. Financial need will be considered. 4. Student will complete an application, listing all extra-curricular activities including athletic and co-curricular areas. 5. Student must not have received any other monetary award from the high school. 29 Class of 1996 Scholarship Class of 1996 Monetary Award - $500 every other year beginning with Class of (Awarded in 2015, we will skip 2016, Award in 2017, skip 2018) 1. Student must have an unweighted GPA of at least Student must have been involved in at least 3 co-curricular activities in each of their 4 years at Bensalem. 3. The recipient of this award must be actively involved in school activities, show leadership ability, and pride in Bensalem. Senior Class Advisor(s) and Administrator overseeing senior activities and one (1) of Class of 96 officers, if available. 30 Class of 2008 Pride Scholarship Class of 2008 Monetary Award of $500 given every year beginning with Class of Student must have a minimum GPA of Student must have been actively involved in at least 2 activities a year for 2 years, one of which must be 12 th grade. 3. Student must display an overall commitment to BHS in terms of school involvement, spirit, and pride. Class of 2008 Officers and Advisor Completion of the required short essay in addition to the standard application Essay In the past, the Homecoming Pep Rally was held after school where only a fraction of BHS students attended. During their senior year, the Class of 2008 revived school spirit by holding an in-school pep rally for the entire student body, an event that had not occurred in 13 years. Through this event, they were able to restore a sense of school spirit and pride that had been missing from the hallways of BHS. What have you done in your time at BHS to personify school spirit, pride, and dedication? 27

35 Benjamin Rush Elementary School Scholarship Benjamin Rush PTG $ Scholarship This award will be given to a boy or girl who: 1. has at least a 3.0 cumulative average; 2. will be attending a 2 or 4-year postsecondary institution; 3. has participated in at least one (1) school and one (1) outside Community Service Program, or part-time job 4. attended Benjamin Rush Elementary School for at least four (4) years. 36 Struble Award Mr. Russell Struble, Jr. and Bensalem Rotary Monetary Award 1. This particular award shall be presented to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in the teaching of mathematics and/or science. 2. The recipient of this award shall be a person who is not receiving any other award, cash or otherwise, at the same awards program. A special committee composed of at least one science staff member and a mathematics staff member together with some guidance personnel shall nominate one person. This name shall then be submitted for the Awards Program. Not necessary 33

39 . AWARD Music Boosters Scholarship Bensalem Music Boosters Association Two monetary scholarships may be made if funds are available. Payable to the college. A. Student must be a member in good standing of a school music organization - band, choir, orchestra, band front, or drill team. B. Based on service and achievement in the music department, academic record, and relative financial need. C. Career goal in music will be considered. Music Teachers and President of the Music Boosters. Students must submit a letter of interest, stating their qualifications based on the above criteria, in addition to the standard application 36

43 Bensalem String Scholarship Bensalem String Parent Organization Monetary Award and Certificate for a student who will pursue a degree in music 1. Student must be a member in good standing of the High School Orchestra; 2. Student must pursue a degree in Music Education, Music Therapy, or Music Performance; 3. Student must use the award to continue studies on his/her string instrument or toward the purchase of a string instrument or string instrument accessories. 44 Bensalem Music Department Faculty Scholarship BTSD Music Faculty AMOUNT/DESCRIPTION: Monetary Award Payable To The Higher Education Institute 1. Student must be a member in good standing in band, choir, or orchestra. 2. Student must be involved in at least one performance group for all years enrolled at BHS. 3. Eligibility based on service and achievement. 4. Student must show proof of acceptance in a general education, music education, music performance or music therapy program at an accredited institution. 5. There will be a live audition judged by Music Department Faculty. 6. There will be a short interview conducted by the Music Department Faculty. Complete Standard Application and a Letter of Interest Outlining the Student s Qualification *This award will be granted only on the occasion where a student or students qualify; a pool of applicants does not imply the scholarship will be granted each year. 41

45 Mr. Owl and Miss Owl Bensalem High School Trophy Awarded to the boy and girl, judged by ballot of all varsity Head Coaches, Administrators and Counselors, to have been the outstanding athlete during their high school career at Bensalem High School. 46 Edward Johnston Memorial Award Class of 1975 Two Medals - One for Dramatics and One for Musicals A candidate must have any one of the following three qualifications: 1. Participated in two major roles in a play; 2. Participated in one major role and one minor role; 3. In case of tie, consideration will be given to excellence of performance and faithfulness in attending rehearsals. Dramatics and Musical Director(s) Not necessary 43

47 BHS Theater and Drama Club Awards BHS Drama Parents 3 separate $200 scholarships In addition to completing the BHS scholarship application, include an additional sheet that separately lists your involvement in BHS Theater over your 4 years at Bensalem High School, including membership in the drama club, activities at the Thespian Conference, activities in the spring musical or any other area you feel applies to demonstrating your theater activities. Essay: In 500 words or less describe how you think Theater has enriched your life at BHS and how you think it will continue to benefit you in the future. 1. The Ted Gontarsky Tech Award Eligibility: At least 3 years in stage crew, demonstrating a growing responsibility over time and a dedication to learning the technical aspects of theater and a willingness to share and teach those skills to others. 2. The Spirit of Theater Award Eligibility: 4 years of involvement in the BHS theater including teamwork, appreciation of the arts, and a willingness to go beyond the performance either as an officer or member of the drama club, by your volunteer work for the theater program at BHS or by your activities at the Thespian conference. 3. The Bensalem Tony Award Eligibility: 3 years of involvement in BHS theater as a cast member, with a principle role in your senior year. Special consideration will be given to those who plan to continue in the area of theater as a major or a minor post high school. Musical Director and any group she/he names. 48 Marie B. Hansen/Dorothy Henry Awards for Excellence in Foreign Language Foreign Language Department Gift from Foreign Language Department Three (3) Separate Awards 1. One French 2. One German 3. One Spanish Student with the highest score in each language to be given the award. Score to be computed by: Multiplying the value of the letter grade by the level of the language studies for each year studies. Example: A - in level 1-4 A - in level 2-8 A - in level 3-12 A - in level 4-16 A - in level 5-20 In the event of a tie, the scores from a second language studies will be computed into the score. If the students involved in the tie have not studied a second language, a written and oral test will be given and graded by the language teachers. Foreign Language Faculty Not necessary 45

49 Bensalem High School Ambassador of the Year Royce Cohen BHS 08 Monetary Award; engraved nameplate on plaque 1. The student must attend and have fulfilled all graduation requirements for Bensalem High School. 2. The student must have done one or more things during his/her tenure at Bensalem High School that put Bensalem on the map. a. The things may involve, but are not limited to, one or more of the following areas: academics, athletics, art, music, theater, community service, etc. b. Some ways students may put Bensalem on the map include, but are not limited to winning awards/receiving recognition as an individual or as part of a larger team or group effort at the regional, county, state, national level, etc. Royce Cohen Submit one-page essay with cover sheet 46

50 Parx Casino Scholarship Parx Casino Parx Casino will award $1500 to high school seniors who have enrolled in an accredited college or university for the academic years. Winners receive a non-renewable $ scholarship.
