5 On March 21, Garden City High School s Latin students participated in the annual Certamen competition hosted by Suffolk Classical Society at SUNY Stony Brook. Four students from one of the Latin 3 teams (Philip Acinapuro, Michael Liberopoulos, and Andrew Tang, led by captain Matthew Granville) competed in the finals, placing third overall and meriting an award cum laude. all the Latin Certamen students from GCHS on their excellent work! On March 24, 2017, nine students from Mrs. Brunetti's Italian classes participated in the AATI (Association of Teachers of Italian) Poetry Contest. The poems ranged from those written during the Renaissance to those from contemporary poets. Alex Stefanik won a silver medal for level three, and Christina Bennett earned Honorable Mention for the same level. Nicholas Bambino also placed second for contestants in level four. For the same level, Alexis Spera was awarded an Honorable Mention. For level five, Gabrielle Frandina earned an Honorable Mention by reciting a very challenging poem. From 03/01/2017 to 03/10/2017, Garden City High School's Spanish Club & World Languages Department sold hand-woven bracelets, or pulseras in Spanish, to empower the artists who make them in Nicaragua and Guatemala. The sale was organized through the Pulsera Project, a nonprofit organization that empowers and educates young people in the U.S. and Central America through pulsera sales. Student and teacher volunteers raised funds that benefit fair trade jobs, worker rights, sustainability, and education, while learning about the culture, lives, and struggles of Central

6 Americans. The Pulsera Project s goal is to create a more just and colorful world by encouraging conscious consumerism and social enterprise. Students and teachers throughout Garden City High School s World Languages Department sold more than 500 pulseras during World Languages Week and raised a total of $2,630 for the Pulsera Project.
