2 Winning Students BUCS Development Event Performance Sport

3 Introduction Winning Students (WS) was established in May 2009 as Scotland s National Sports Scholarship programme supporting student athletes. The Scholarships are funded by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and managed by the University of Stirling. An advisory board, compromising from the various sectors, provide guidance on the development of the programme. Athletes are nominated for a scholarship up to the value of 6,000 awarded by their sport s governing body across core sports. There is also opportunity for individual awards to athletes competing in other sports -referred to as non-core sports.

4 Background Since 2009 WS has supported 543 student athletes through 1229 scholarships The WS network covers 90% of institutions funded by the Scottish Funding Council WS is a substantial programme supporting around 150 athletes per annum and is becoming increasingly significant - in challenging economic times WS positively influenced academic flexibility -a reoccurring theme which continues to advance and encourage the dual career pathway followed by scholar athletes

5 Core Objectives To support talented student athletes to progress along the performance pathway in their sport. To enhance the levels of success of talented student athletes in international competitions. To enhance the extent and quality of partnership working between governing bodies of sport and the further and higher education sectors. To enhance the capability of the further and higher education sectors to support and cater for the needs of talented student athletes as flexibly as possible.

6 Governance and Management The University of Stirling governs WS on behalf of Scotland s colleges and universities. Stirling has established a governance team, compromising academic and sports-related staff, which is responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of WS. This consists of: - WS Co-ordinator - WS Communications Officer - Winning Students Advisory Board (WSAB)

8 Investment The SFC in principal agreed a four-year funding cycle to the University of Stirling for the period between 1 st August to the 31 st of July , 000 has been committed to each year of the funding cycle which represented an increase of almost 10% per annum of the previous cycle Roughly 13% of funding was directed towards management and promotion of WS The other 87% is directed towards student-athletes via scholarship awards totalling around 520,000

9 WS Sports WS is split into core an induvial sports. In the 2017/18 academic year WS awarded scholarships in the following sports: Core Sports -Badminton -Canoeing -Curling -Women s Football -Golf -Hockey -Judo -Orienteering -Rowing -Swimming -Tennis -Triathlon Individual Sports - Athletics - Archery -Cycling - Karate -Shooting -Sailing -Snowboarding

11 Have a British Passport Scholar Eligibility Undertaking a recognised education programme at an SFC College or University in Scotland Able to represent Great Britain and/ or Scotland in chosen sport Student Athletes must be aged years old Disability Student Athletes must be between years old

12 Funding Unique in the way that the funding is distributed Work with each Scottish Governing Body or Individual to allocate funding to have the maximum amount of Impact Funding is used in a variety of ways: -Competition Expenses -Living Grants -Travel -Strength and Conditioning -Accommodation -Training Camps -Equipment -Coaching -Lifestyle support -Nutrition
