Preparations are being made for the induction of a new NHS class, the prom, and the many events that will be taking place over the next several months to honor the accomplishments of our senior class.

1 CANFIELD HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER April 2015 FROM THE OFFICE: As the fourth nine weeks begins, the students and staff at Canfield High School remain focused on the aggressive pursuit of exemplary learning opportunities. With the warmer weather comes the heart of the spring sports season with baseball, softball, track, and boys tennis all underway. Preparations are being made for the induction of a new NHS class, the prom, and the many events that will be taking place over the next several months to honor the accomplishments of our senior class. Needless to say, these are busy but exciting times here at CHS. The second round of state required testing will be administered throughout the month of May in addition to Advanced Placement tests. Ohio s new assessments are composed of two series of tests including the Performance Based Assessments (PBA) which were administered in February and March and the End of Year Assessments (EOY) that will be administered in May. We sincerely thank our CHS students, staff, and families for making the transition go so. Special thanks goes out to our ninth grade guidance counselor and district testing coordinator, Mrs. Reed, for her determination and focus in the preparation and administration of these new assessments. We will continue to provide updates as the state legislature discusses potential adjustments to state required assessments. This is the time of the year during which we focus closely on helping our students transition. Our guidance staff is diligently working with our current seniors as they make plans for their next steps and we are working collaborative with the staff at CVMS to engage in supporting the transition of our incoming freshman. National Merit Finalists National Merit Finalists Canfield High School Seniors Amy Goddard and Alyssa Kerensky have fulfilled all of the requirements to be recognized as National Merit Finalists by

As a result, they will be in contention for one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about 33 million dollar to be offered later this spring.

2 National Merit Finalists National Merit Finalists Canfield High School Seniors Amy Goddard and Alyssa Kerensky have fulfilled all of the requirements to be recognized as National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. In September, Goddard and Kerensky were chosen as two of 16, 000 Semifinalists out of the 1,500,000 entrants. As a result, they will be in contention for one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about 33 million dollar to be offered later this spring. The program is highly competitive and recognizes students who demonstrate exemplary academic ability on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the areas of critical reading, mathematics, and writing. In addition to her academic success she has been a section leader in the marching band and currently serves as the Vice President of the Canfield High School Speech and Debate Team. Amy will be attending the Illinois Institute of Technology on the Camras Scholarship where she will study biomedical engineering. She has career aspirations of becoming a researcher in the biomedical field with an interest in stem cell research. She is currently the president of the Canfield Players and has been an active participant in the Canfield High School choirs, Leo s Club, and cross country team. 2 CHS NEWSLETTER :: April 2015

Amazing Artists Students in Canfield High School's art program have recently been honored in national, state and local exhibitions and competitions.

Canfield High School Senior Tara Roger's piece entitled "The Handyman's Canvas" was one of 300,000 works that were submitted, nationwide, to the competition.

There were 17,000 works of art that qualified for national judging, of these; only 2,250 were awarded National Medals.

Recently two CHS students, seniors, Candice Smith and Bonnie Anderson had their work selected to be included in the 2015 Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition.

High school art students from across the country, competed in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Canfield High School Senior Tara Roger's piece entitled "The Handyman's Canvas" was one of 300,000 works that were submitted, nationwide, to the competition. This week Rogers was informed that her work has been awarded a National Scholastics Gold Medal. There were 17,000 works of art that qualified for national judging, of these; only 2,250 were awarded National Medals. She will be honored at an awards ceremony this June in New York City's Carnegie Hall. Tara plans on attending the University of Mount Union in the fall where she will major in Biology and Pre-med. Recently two CHS students, seniors, Candice Smith and Bonnie Anderson had their work selected to be included in the 2015 Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition. Smith, who plans on furthering her education in graphic design at either Ohio University or Columbus College of Art and Design, had her piece entitled "White Umbrella" selected as a Governor's award of Excellence winner. Anderson, who will attend Columbus College of Art and Design in the fall, has two of her works, entitled "Plastic Meltdown" and "Blue Summer" displayed in the show. These pieces were amongst the 12,000 works that competed from across the state of Ohio. The top 300 works were included in the show with only 25 of those earning a Governor's award of Excellence. There will be an awards ceremony Sunday, April 12 at noon in The Columbus Athenaeum 32 N. 4th Street, Columbus, OH The show will be open for viewing at the James A. Rhodes Office Tower from April 13 - May 14 from 9am-5pm, weekdays only. Spring Sports Update Concert Season Baseball The boy s baseball team is off to an 8-2 start with a three game winning streak and high hopes for a competitive season.

They will continue their season against Edgewood, Boardman, and Harding over the next week. Tennis The boy s tennis team is enjoying a perfect start with a 5 and 0 record.

Track The boy s and girl s track teams will be in competition on April 18 th in the Mahoning County High School Championships.

4 Spring Sports Update Concert Season Baseball The boy s baseball team is off to an 8-2 start with a three game winning streak and high hopes for a competitive season. The team will face Struthers, Fitch, and Poland in the upcoming weeks. Softball The girl s softball team is off to a strong start with a record of 6 and 1. They will continue their season against Edgewood, Boardman, and Harding over the next week. Tennis The boy s tennis team is enjoying a perfect start with a 5 and 0 record. The team will play in the OCTA Team Tournament at Hudson on April 16 th and will continue in headto-head play against Niles McKinley, Harding, and Edgewood. Track The boy s and girl s track teams will be in competition on April 18 th in the Mahoning County High School Championships. Thus far the girls are carrying a 3-1 record and the boys are sitting at 1-3. Good luck to our band and choir groups in state contest performance. One Octave Higher Ensemble, the Canfield Chamber Ensemble, and the Symphonic and Concert Bands compete on May 1 st.

Coach Larry Davis Honored Canfield retired teacher, and long-time tennis coach Larry Davis, will be inducted into the Curbstone Coaches' "Hall of Fame" at their annual induction banquet on Sunday, 3

The Curbstone Coaches was formulated in 1958 with the purpose of preserving and perpetuating the memory of athletes who have brought favorable reflection and distinction to our community.

5 Coach Larry Davis Honored Canfield retired teacher, and long-time tennis coach Larry Davis, will be inducted into the Curbstone Coaches' "Hall of Fame" at their annual induction banquet on Sunday, 3 MAY 2015 at Mr. Anthony's Banquet Center. The Curbstone Coaches was formulated in 1958 with the purpose of preserving and perpetuating the memory of athletes who have brought favorable reflection and distinction to our community. To date, more than 400 hundred area athletes, coaches, administrators, and contributors have been honored from many fields of sports. This year s guest speaker will be Ray "Boom-Boom' Mancini and Coach Davis will be among one of only 12 inductees. The staff and students of Canfield High School congratulate Coach Davis on this prestigious honor and recognition.
