1 1 The University of British Columbia School of Kinesiology Vancouver Campus SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS, AND PRIZES FOR THE 2017/18 WINTER SESSION INFORMATION PACKAGE The School of Kinesiology offers a number of scholarships, awards, and prizes, which are available only to students registered in the School of Kinesiology. All details regarding the application and selection process are included in this package. Students can apply for as many scholarships, awards, or prizes for which they are eligible. However, only one application form is required regardless of the number of scholarships, awards, or prizes applied for. Students who have any questions regarding the application should direct their questions to kin.scholarships.awards@ubc.ca Things to Note: o Must have completed 27 credits from September to April (Exceptions may apply for students in the following categories: Aboriginal, Exchange, Varsity Student-Athletes, Co-op, International, or students graduating in May 2018) o Must have a minimum of 75% (summer credits are not considered) o Students registered through Access & Diversity should check with KIN Advising regarding eligibility o Applications can be submitted online, sent by to kin.scholarships.awards@ubc.ca, or dropped off at the KIN Advising Office (Room 202, War Memorial Gym) o All required documents must be received no later than Friday, May 18 th, 2018 (this includes references). Applications will not be accepted past this date.

3 GENERAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 3 Students must meet all of the following General Criteria to be eligible for any Kinesiology Scholarship, Award, or Prize. 1. Completed 27 credits during the winter session (September to April). Exceptions may apply for students in the following categories: Aboriginal, Exchange, Varsity Student-Athletes, Coop, International, or students graduating in May 2018) Students who have taken less than 27 credits should explain their exceptional personal circumstances in their personal statement (see page 4, step ii). Eligibility for scholarships, awards and prizes is based solely on credits taken from September 2017 through April 2018 either at UBC, on exchange, or while on Co-op. 2. Achieved at least a 75% sessional average during the academic year. PLEASE NOTE: IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE GENERAL CRITERIA LISTED ABOVE, TO BE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR, AND RECEIVE, ANY SCHOLARSHIP, STUDENTS MUST RETURN TO THE SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY AND REGISTER IN A FULL-TIME (24 credit minimum) UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR. IF YOU ARE GRADUATING IN MAY 2018, AND NOT PLANNING ON TAKING COURSES DURING THE 2018 WINTER SESSION, YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY ONLY FOR AWARDS AND PRIZES. SELECTION PROCESS The selection committee, comprised of the School's Undergraduate Committee, will evaluate all applications. Recommendations from the Committee will be forwarded to the Department of Student Financial Services which will notify successful students. Results are not usually made available to students until some time in August or September. Please note that the School of Kinesiology cannot release the names of winners or any information regarding the status of applications. Successful students will be notified through their SSC account. Recognition of all successful applications will take place at the School of Kinesiology Awards Night to be held in November Applicants should be aware that if invested funds or donor contributions do not provide the necessary income for any scholarship, award, or prize, the University reserves the right to reduce the stated value or withhold the award. NOTE TO RECIPIENTS For students who receive and accept a scholarship, award, or prize, we strongly encourage you to write a letter of appreciation to the donor.

4 HOW TO APPLY 4 STEP 1: Read the detailed descriptions and specific eligibility criteria for each of the Scholarships, Awards, and Prizes (pages 5-9) to determine your eligibility. Only one application form needs to be submitted regardless of the number of scholarships, awards, and prizes you are applying for. STEP 2: Complete the Application Form and sign the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This form can be found on page 10 of this package. STEP 3: Include the following documents with your application, or attach, if submitting your application electronically. i. A Detailed Resume: Focusing on the last 3 to 4 years. Include your education, employment, volunteer activities, contributions to the School of Kinesiology, to the University of British Columbia, and to the community. Please clearly identify employment and volunteer activities. For your volunteer activities include the amount of time (hours, days, months, years) that you devoted to each activity. ii. Personal Statement: Elaborating on the details in your resume, write a personal statement which addresses academic achievement and competency in your chosen field of study, career goals, leadership, and service to the School of Kinesiology, the University of British Columbia, and the community. The Personal Statement should not exceed 500 words and should be written in Times New Roman font size 12 with ¾. iii. 2 CURRENT, Confidential, Letters of Reference - Confirming and describing your involvement in the activities outlined in your resume and your personal statement. Sealed reference letters can be hand delivered to the School of Kinesiology Undergraduate Advising Office at Room 202 in War Memorial Gym, or sent by directly from the person writing the reference letter to kin.scholarships.awards@ubc.ca iv. As indicated in the descriptions on pages 5-9, several of the scholarships, awards, and prizes require a written rationale explaining why, with references to the description and the criteria, you believe that you are a worthy candidate. Please note that your application will not be considered complete, and will not be adjudicated, if a rationale is not included. v. Applicants should select the individuals who are serving as referees as early as possible so that these individuals have sufficient time to submit their reference letters by the application deadline, which is Friday, May 18 th, 2018.

5 SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS 5 DESCRIPTIONS AND SPECIFIC ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA PHYSICAL EDUCATION ALUMNI AND KINESIOLOGY FACULTY SCHOLARSHIPS Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 1, 2, or 3 in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Scholarships have been endowed by alumni of the School and by donations from the School of Kinesiology faculty, past and present. The scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program who have displayed academic achievement, leadership, and competency in their field of specialization. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. WILLIAM B. McNULTY KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 1, 2, or 3 in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Two scholarships have been made available by William B. McNulty, B.P.E. '68, M.P.E. '70, M.A. '83. The awards are made to students entering the second, third or fourth year who have combined academic excellence with an outstanding contribution in student or community affairs. Emphasis is put upon "service above self". One award is made to a male student, the other to a female student. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. HEATHER LAWSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Year and Program Eligibility: Female students registered in Year 3 of the Interdisciplinary Studies program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this scholarship. As a memorial to Heather Lawson, a third-year student in the School of Physical Education and Recreation tragically killed in a skiing accident in March 1972, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Lawson of Victoria, have endowed a scholarship. It is awarded to a student, preferably a woman, enrolled in the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program, with a specialization in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program who is proceeding to the fourth year of the program. The basis of the award is sound academic standing and all round qualities of leadership. The scholarship is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. JANIE AND HECTOR WRIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 1, 2, or 3 in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this scholarship. A scholarship has been endowed by Janie D. Wright BPE '56, in memory of her parents. The award is offered to an undergraduate student in Kinesiology and is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. Scholarships pages 5 & 6

6 SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS 6 SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS Year and Program Eligibility: International students in Year 1, 2,or 3 in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Scholarships are offered to continuing international students at the School of Kinesiology, Vancouver campus. Students selected for these scholarships must have completed at least 30 credits towards their undergraduate degree or be entering the second year of their program. Students must demonstrate strong academic achievement, engagement in the School, and the potential to make a scholarly contribution within their chosen field of study. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. MARY ISDALE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 3 in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this scholarship. A scholarship is offered to a student who achieves high academic standing in the third year of any field of study. Consideration is given to eligible students who, over a period of years, have demonstrated particular interest in highland dancing, Scottish country dancing, piping or drumming. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. ANNE D. TILLEY SCHOLARSHIP IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 1, 2,or 3 in the 2017 Winter Session are eligible to apply for this scholarship. A scholarship has been endowed by Ms. Anne D. Tilley for an undergraduate student or a graduate student enrolled in the School of Kinesiology who is interested in the field of developmental disability/mental handicap/ intellectual disability. The scholarship is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology and, in the case of a graduate student, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. CAPTAIN C.Y. WU SCHOLARSHIP IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 1 or 2, in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this scholarship. A scholarship is endowed by Captain C.Y. Wu and Dr. C.H. Wu, to a second or third-year student in the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program who has demonstrated an interest in aquatic coaching or management. Preference is given to a student with a background in aquatics. The scholarship is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. Scholarships pages 5 & 6

7 SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY AWARDS & PRIZES 7 DESCRIPTIONS AND SPECIFIC ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA W. GORDON BRANDRETH PRIZE IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 3 or 4 of the Kinesiology and Health Science Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. A prize has been endowed by Mrs. Bertha Brandreth in memory of her husband W. Gordon Brandreth. The prize is offered to a student who is pursuing studies in the Kinesiology and Health Sciences program in the School of Kinesiology, and is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. LIEUTENANT JAMES DOUGLAS HAMILTON PRIZE Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 3 of the Physical and Health Education Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. A prize, in memory of Lieutenant James Douglas Hamilton, a graduate in Physical Education and a former member of the COTC of this University, who, on April 13, 1952, was killed in action in Korea, is offered by the Kinesiology Alumni and Undergraduate Societies. The award is open to third year students in Physical and Health Education showing academic and physical proficiency. The prize is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. KINESIOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE SOCIETY PRIZE Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 3 or 4 in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. This prize has been initiated by members of the Kinesiology Undergraduate Society and are intended to recognize students who have made unselfish contributions to student and faculty life. This prize will be awarded annually to students in third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program, who have maintained a high overall academic average and have demonstrated leadership qualities through extra-curricular activities within the field of Kinesiology. Reference letters by professionals in the field should support the application. The prizes will be made on the recommendation of the School in consultation with the Kinesiology Undergraduate Society. R. F. OSBORNE PRIZE Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 3 or 4 of the Physical and Health Education Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. A prize in recognition of Robert F. Osborne's long and dedicated service to Physical Education, is awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program, with general academic proficiency, leadership and service in the field of Physical and Health Education. The prize is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. JOHN B. SERVICE MEMORIAL PRIZE IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 3 or 4 of the Kinesiology and Health Science Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. A prize has been endowed by family and friends in memory of John B. Service. The award is offered to a student specializing in the Kinesiology and Health Science Program and is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology and, in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. 8 SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY AWARDS & PRIZES 8 ROBERT F. OSBORNE MEMORIAL AWARD IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Students who are returning to the School of Kinesiology in the 2017 winter session are eligible to apply for this award. An award has been endowed in memory of Dr. Robert F. Osborne s outstanding service as coach, teacher and administrator during his 33 years as a faculty member at UBC, 27 of them as Director of the School of Physical Education and Recreation. The award is available to undergraduate students returning to the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program who have exhibited excellence in academics, athletics, and service in sport and recreation. The award is made on the recommendation of the School. Preference will be given to a UBC Varsity athletic team. J.J. McRAE MEMORIAL PRIZE Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 3 or 4 of the Physical and Health Education Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. A prize endowed by Mrs. R.F. Osborne in memory of her father, J.J. McRae, is awarded to a student in third or fourth year of the Physical and Health Education program of the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree with general academic proficiency who has made a contribution to youth work. Special consideration is given to a student who has worked with the blind or other handicapped groups. The prize is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. PETER ANDREW MARRON MEMORIAL AWARD Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Years 3 or 4 of the Kinesiology and Health Science Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. An award has been endowed in memory of Peter Andrew Marron by his father George A. Marron. The award is available to a student in the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program who is pursuing studies in the Kinesiology and Health Sciences Program, or involved in research work, who displays scholarship, leadership and perseverance. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. LEONARD OSBORNE MEMORIAL PRIZE Year and Program Eligibility: Students registered in Year 3 of the Physical and Health Education Program in the 2017 Winter session are eligible to apply for this prize. A prize endowed by Robert F. Osborne in memory of his father J. Leonard Osborne, is awarded to a student in the third year of the Physical and Health Education program of the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program with general academic proficiency, who has demonstrated expertise and leadership in the field of coaching. The prize is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. Awards & Prizes pages 7-9

9 SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGY AWARDS & PRIZES 9 DR. RICHARD L. RAMSAY AWARD IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Open to all School of Kinesiology students registered in Years 1, 2, 3, or 4 of any program in the 2017 Winter Session. An award is offered annually by Margaret Ramsay and family in honour of her late husband, Richard (Dick) Ramsay. The award is open to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Kinesiology who are also involved in the recreational activities at UBC. Dick Ramsay developed the Recreation-Education degree program at UBC in the mid- 1960s. He felt strongly that leadership skills were not only learned in the classroom but from engaging in the local community. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology. BARBARA SCHRODT AWARD IN KINESIOLOGY Year and Program Eligibility: Open to all School of Kinesiology students registered in Years 2, 3, or 4 of any program in the 2017 Winter Session. An award has been endowed by Barbara Schrodt for an undergraduate student entering or registered in the third or fourth year in the Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program who has been an outstanding playing member of a women's field hockey team at UBC and is taking courses related to teaching physical and health education. The award is not to exceed $1,000, and is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology in consultation with the Intercollegiate Coordinator, Department of Athletics. CARLEY "KITTY" ROSALINE KENNEDY MEMORIAL LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR ABORIGINAL STUDENTS Year and Program Eligibility: Open to all Aboriginal School of Kinesiology students registered in Years 3 or 4 of any program in the 2017 Winter Session are eligible to apply for this award. An award has been made available through an endowment established by the School of Kinesiology, in memory of Carley "Kitty" Rosaline Kennedy. In Kitty s words, "Follow your heart but let your body lead the way and BE the health for the life you want to live." The award is for a third or fourth year Aboriginal student in the School of Kinesiology who has demonstrated inspirational leadership in their community and in Aboriginal programs at UBC. To be considered, students need to be registered in any courses or the Co-op program in the School of Kinesiology. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Kinesiology.
