1 THE 20 TH ANNUAL WARREN WETZEL, MD TRAUMA/EMERGENCY MEDICINE SYMPOSIUM WEDNESDAY, MAY 2, 2018 The Annual Warren Wetzel, MD Trauma/Emergency Medicine Symposium represents the only regional conference dedicated solely to the management of trauma patients. As such, it has been able to attract a nationally recognized faculty. New York City has 16 ACS verified trauma centers, and the Symposium provides an important forum for the sharing of science and ideas related to trauma. Program Goals Physicians and nurses should be aware of the many complex management strategies available for the treatment of the injured, in order to minimize complications and mortality. The educational goals of the Symposium are for the attendees to: l Re-examine traditional management for mild to moderate traumatic brain injury l Bring attention to the dangers of distracted driving l Examine gun violence with a biopsychosocial disease model and learn how we can decrease the burden of gun violence l Discuss the practical approach to the injured extremity l Review the most recent severe traumatic brain injury management guidelines and how to apply them to our practice l Explore how palliative care management applies to the trauma patient l Understand what psychological support is available for children who experienced a traumatic event l Gain insight from a healthcare professional s first-hand experience from the recent Las Vegas mass shooting NYC Health + Hospitals is accredited by the Medical Society for the State of New York to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. 5 REMEMBERING A SPECIAL MAN When one considers the individuals who have left their mark on the history and reputation of Jacobi, one person immediately comes to mind: Dr. Warren Wetzel. Dr. Wetzel was Chief of Trauma Surgery at Jacobi from An innovative and widely respected surgeon, Dr. Wetzel was instrumental in the development of a Trauma Service which today enjoys national renown. He also developed a unique relationship with the herpetology staff at the Bronx Zoo, upon which he founded Jacobi s Regional Snakebite Center. Beloved by colleagues and staff alike, Dr. Wetzel possessed unparalleled surgical skill, remarkable leadership ability, deep compassion, and an intense devotion to Jacobi. He has left us with a legacy and an inspiration we will never forget. Jacobi is the only Pediatric Trauma Center in the Bronx and Southern Westchester. Jacobi also has the only Snakebite Treatment Center in the entire tri-state area. Additionally, its Burn Service is the designated burn center for NYC Health + Hospitals, and one of only three city-wide.
