1 IMPACT Virginia s 2nd Annual Summit: The Reality of Child Sex Trafficking in Virginia Saturday, September 16, a.m. 3 p.m. VCU Medical Center McGlothlin Medical Education Center 1201 E. Marshall Street l Richmond, Virginia 23298
2 Program Background Doctors knew I was having sex with older men and had been beaten up multiple times but didn t put together that I was a trafficking victim. -Sarah Child sex trafficking in the U.S. is a pervasive and persistent practice that is affecting vulnerable youth in every state of our nation. It is largely an underground problem that involves the buying and selling of youth for profit through the use of force, fraud and coercion. Statistics indicate the vast majority of these victims are U.S. citizens, with over half being girls and boys under the age of 18. Victims typically do not self-identify as a trafficking victim; they may not disclose their status due to fear, shame, and short encounter times with clinicians. In a study conducted in 2014 by Lederer, L. and Wetzel, C.A., 87.8 percent of victims interviewed reported contact with health care but failed to be identified by the provider. This program offers a unique learning opportunity for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, EMS personnel and other health care providers. Educational objectives 1. Describe the scope and nature of child sex trafficking in Virginia and the United States. 2. Recognize common indicators and high-risk factors for sex trafficking. 3. Identify victims of child sex trafficking. 4. Review guidelines and protocol for a coordinated response to an identified trafficking victim. Teleconference This education is also offered as a teleconferenced collaborative with:
