2 Target Audience / Conference Objectives The 20th Annual Trauma Conference is an interprofessional activity designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses in the following specialties: trauma, emergency medicine, orthopedics, critical care, pulmonary, hospitalists, geriatric medicine, physical medicine, general practice, respiratory, internal medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, pharmacists, physical therapists, health professional students, and allied health professionals who care for trauma patients are welcome to attend. Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to: Pre-Hospital Interventions: When the Ordinary Just Won t Cut It Identify historical precedence, key individuals, and efforts necessary for surgical intervention in the pre-hospital setting Define pre-hospital challenges requiring mitigation prior to civilian field intervention Discuss emergent pre-hospital intervention from the perspective of bleeding control, airway management, thoracic injury care, vascular access challenges and expedited amputation Improve patient care through interprofessional problem-solving and collaboration Texas Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), The Basics Answered Describe the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Describe the Texas TQIP program Outline the importance of the Texas TQIP program Sport Concussion Management: A Multidimensional & Interdisciplinary Approach Recognize the epidemiology of sport concussion Describe the pathophysiology, clinical presentation and clinical recovery associated with sport concussion Discuss evidence-based practices for the management of sport concussion Identify the need for health care professionals to form an interdisciplinary team in order to work together to care for concussed patients Discuss when clinical care and professional responsibility ends for the concussed patient Case Study in Bleeding Control Recognize the importance of bleeding control in an emergency situation Determine how health care teams can collaborate and communicate effectively in the field from pre-hospital through discharge Discuss the importance of a collaborative approach to the Stop the Bleed Campaign and the need for our health care professionals to educate the public Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA): An Overview and Update Describe the patient population who may benefit from Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) Distinguish the indications and contra-indications for the use of REBOA Review REBOA protocol, procedural steps, and complications of REBOA Recognize the need for a multi-disciplinary team approach when implementing REBOA into a trauma program and its challenges For Goodness Snakes: Myths and Misconceptions in the Management of Snakebites Recognize the venomous snakes native to North Texas Describe the clinical features of pit viper and coral snake envenomation Discuss the general approach to managing envenomation Identify the indications for antivenom therapy Explain why surgical intervention, antibiotics and corticosteroids are not generally necessary for snakebites Discuss the role of various specialists in the management of envenomation To Bleed or Not to Bleed: Practical Considerations in Anticoagulation Reversal Review current literature and practice guidelines for the use of anticoagulation reversal agents Discuss the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties for common anticoagulation agents Identify safety concerns associated with utilizing reversal agents in high-risk patients Formulate clinical recommendations for reversal of commonly used anticoagulants Guidelines for the Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury Describe the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury Discuss the rationale for the therapeutic interventions utilized in the care of a brain-injured patient Review evidence-based recommendations for the care of the brain-injured patient
