2 What is Early Literacy? Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write; these early skills are known to impact a child s lifelong development. Currently 34% of Surrey s children entering Kindergarten struggle to learn and this number is increasing. Research shows that literacy is a key determinant of health and has a great impact on education, employment and income later in life. Support of this event allows us to reach some of the most vulnerable families in our community and ensure they are aware of the FREE resources available to them at Surrey Libraries. Play = Learning Strong research supports active learning as the most effective and age appropriate for language development and early literacy for children birth to six years. According to a study by Dorothy Singer, a senior research scientist at Yale University s Department of Psychology and Child Study Center, Promoting play contributes to early literacy development by increasing attention span, memory, creativity, language, and vocabulary skills. It also lays the foundation for logical mathematical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem solving things they will carry with them throughout their school years
