1 SEPTEMBER 11, 2015 ALL STAFF MEETING THURSDAY OCTOBER 8 th Please save the date for the next upcoming All Staff Meeting that will be held on Thursday October 8 th in the River Room. Meeting start time is 7:45 AM. Coffee will be available beginning at 7:30 AM. PILOTS STAFF FELLOWSHIP The PILOTS Staff Fellowship will be accepting applications for the fall. This program recognizes the important role that all Museum colleagues play in the success of Mystic Seaport. The PILOTS themselves are among the many beneficiaries of the dedication and commitment of Museum colleagues. The PILOTS Staff Fellowships are monetary awards that support a wide range of purposeful activities including: continuing education internships research skills development training certification special projects. Eligibility Criteria Candidates for PILOTS Staff Fellowships must be regular full or regular part time employees of Mystic Seaport with tenure of at least 12 months and no open disciplinary actions. Application Process Applications should be made directly to your Department Director in writing in the form of a letter that articulates the following:

2 Employee name and contact information Description of project or activity that will be pursued Date(s) of the program or activity Use and or purpose for the requested funds Explanation of relevance to colleagues role at Mystic Seaport Expected outcomes Supervisor sign off (if not Department Director) Department Directors must approve all applications which will be forwarded to a review panel comprised of one Museum staff member and active members of the PILOTS Corps. Awards Process Upon receipt, the review panel will vet applications and make decisions about awards. Frequency and amount of wards will be at the sole discretion of the review panel. The PILOTS Steering Committee has expressed a desire to cap cumulative award amounts to $10,000 annually. Reporting Process Successful Fellows will be expected to deliver a report, in writing or in person, to the PILOTS corps; about their experiences and the outcomes of their project or activity. Fellows will also be asked to furnish receipts for the expenses covered by the fellowship award. Information can be found on the intranet STAFF PREVIEW OF SHIPS, CLOCKS, AND STARS & LECTURE WITH DR. RICHARD DUNN, CURATOR Staff and volunteers are invited to a morning celebration on Tuesday, September 15 th from 8am 9:30 am in the Schaefer Building to see the new Ships, Clocks, and Stars exhibit. Donuts and coffee will be served. Staff are also invited to listen to Dr. Richard Dunn on Tuesday, from 5pm 6:30 pm in the Greenmanville Church. Dr. Dunn will present a talk on Ships, Clocks, and Stars. MUSEUM DAY LIVE! In the spirit of the Smithsonian Museums, which offer free admission every day, Smithsonian magazine holds an annual event called Museum Day Live! in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! Ticket for free. Each ticket is good for free admission for two. The offer is good only at participating museums and only on September 26. To receive the ticket, you need to register online. 3 FIRST THURSDAY LECTURE Many, many thanks to Elysa Engelman for her very informative and enthusiastic presentation last Thursday previewing our upcoming exhibit Ships, Clocks and Stars opening in the R.J. Schaefer Building on September 19 th. Fred Calabretta, Curator of Collections and Oral Historian, will be our speaker at the first Thursday lecture on October 1 st giving a presentation on Whaling & Exploration: The New London Whaling Fleet in the Eastern Arctic. This is a presentation he gave at the Maritime History Symposium several years ago here at Mystic Seaport. In 1846, the bark McLellan sailed from New London, Connecticut, bound for the Davis Strait whaling grounds, an expanse of frigid ocean separating Baffin Island and Greenland. This voyage established New London s dominance of the eastern arctic whale fishery. It also created an important interrelationship between the New London whaling industry and eastern arctic exploration. Over the next 70 years men and ships from New London s whaling fleet would be extensively involved with arctic explorers, providing support to Elisha Kane, Charles Francis Hall, Robert Peary, and others. With one of the earth s most inhospitable regions serving as a stage, they would play key roles in a series of dramatic episodes. This presentation explores this arctic legacy, including a number of remarkable adventures such as the greatest whaling catch of all a New London arctic whaling crew s discovery and salvage of the abandoned British exploring ship Resolute. It will be held in the Campbell Classroom beginning at 8:30am with coffee and donuts followed by Fred s presentation at 9:00am. Volunteers and staff are welcome. We hope to see you there! -EveAnne Stouch and Susan O Donnell BOOK SIGNING WITH DAVA SOBEL FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 3:30 5:30 PM Dava Sobel will be signing Longitude next Friday September 18 in the Mystic Seaport Bookstore from 3:30 5:30 pm. Dava Sobel, a former New York Times science reporter, is the author of Longitude (Walker 1995 and 2005, Penguin 1996), Galileo s Daughter (Walker 1999 and 2011, Penguin 2000), The Planets(Viking 2005, Penguin 2006), and A More Perfect Heaven (Walker / Bloomsbury, 2011 and 2012). She has also co-authored six books, including Is Anyone Out There? with astronomer Frank Drake. A long-time science contributor to Harvard Magazine, Audubon, Discover, Life, Omni, and The New Yorker, she continues to write for several on-line and print publications. Longitude went through twenty-nine hardcover printings before being re-issued in October 2005 in a special tenth-anniversary edition with a foreword by astronaut Neil Armstrong. Soon after its original publication in 1995, the book was translated into two dozen foreign languages and became a national and international bestseller, much to Ms. Sobel s surprise. It won several literary prizes, including the Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and Book of the Year in England. Together with William J. H. Andrewes, who introduced her to the subject of longitude, Ms. Sobel co-authored The Illustrated Longitude (Walker 1998 and 2003). -Larry Kelly

4 PRIMARY SOURCE WORKSHOPS UPDATE! Over the past month, in the Education Department, we ve been working to update our primary source workshop programs, the items that we use, and the space that we store those items. We d like to send a huge thank you to several people: Chris White, Fred Calabretta and Paul O Pecko in Collections who helped up get items (lots of fun reproductions and props!) and storage cabinets for the programs Brian Koehler, who helped us to create a storage and program space in the Howell Room Heather Christie, who worked hard to label, clean, document and store new items in the Education Collection. This was a big effort and will certainly bring much improvement to our primary source workshops! Scholarship awards support travel, lodging, and three-day registration for individual members of NEMA and employees of NEMA institutional members unless otherwise noted. The deadline for all scholarship programs is September 18, Only one application is necessary to apply for all scholarships and fellowships. Note: Individual opportunities have slightly differing requirements in the essay portion of the application. All applicants will be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible.
