2017 LGPRO CORPORATE PLANNERS NETWORK CONFERENCE Stepping outside the square FRIDAY 17 NOVEMBER, 8.30AM-5.15PM THE PAVILION, ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE, 100 ST KILDA ROAD, MELBOURNE This conference is for Corporate Planners and anyone interested in thinking differently, wanting to learn ways of managing change, planning for the future or those who want to learn from others on how success can be achieved by taking a new approach. MAJOR SPONSOR
Every four years Corporate Planners guide their Council to plan the strategic direction for the organisation through the development of a Council Plan. The challenge is to ensure the needs of the community are balanced with the right level of service delivery within the financial capability of the organisation. On top of this the environment Councils are operating in is changing. Corporate Planners are now required to be more innovative and need to look at new ways of engaging and embracing data and digital technology to become more agile and responsive to the community. It was this discussion that led the planning committee for this conference to decide that business as usual is no longer an option, hence the theme this year, Stepping outside the square. Stepping outside the square
Conference Program Friday 17 November 8.30am 9am-9.15am 9.15am-10.15am Registration Welcome Address: Cameron Gray, LGPro Board Member and Deputy Director Policy and Innovation, Ballarat City Council Keynote Address: Innovation, bring it on! Keynote Presenter: Kate Fuelling, Kate Fuelling Consulting The future is racing towards us. Change has always been a part of the human landscape, but now, more than ever before, change is happening at an exponential rate. It s remarkable to see what innovation is bringing to the world. On the other hand, it s disruptive, it s confronting, and it makes us worry about what is to come. Then how do organisations and employees meet the future with confidence, with optimism, with integrity? And how do we start today? In her keynote address, Kate Fuelling will provide her insights into how technology is driving innovation and how it impacts the way we need to plan strategically for the future am 10.45am Morning Tea 10.45am-11am 11am-12noon Award Presentations The finalists of the 2017 LGPro Corporate and Community Planning Award will present a lightning talk on the key features of their nominated projects. Presentation and Panel Discussion: Keeping ahead of the game Facilitator: Grant Meyer, Manager Integrated Planning, Maroondah City Council Panellists: Sarah Young, Principal Advisor, Service and Business Improvement, Port Phillip City Council James Bruscella, Senior Development Planner, City Planning, Brimbank City Council Adam Stone, Chief Executive Officer, Speedlancer In a world where there is constant change, how does Local Government keep abreast with the times and step outside the square? Faced with a continuing requirement to be innovative, whilst managing change, in this session we will look at two Councils and one private sector business to see what they did differently to progress in the ever growing environments of service planning, digital transformation and quick service turnaround. Each presenter will provide an overview of their project and what was involved in their innovative journey, with Grant Myer from Maroondah City Council leading a panel session following the presentations to further delve into their creative minds.
12pm-1pm Presentation: Doing change well Presented by Les Robinson, Changeologist Changeologist Les Robinson will shine a light on the dos of designing a change effort, internal or external, with a little psychology, including resistance and how to avoid it, motivation and how to create it, and anxiety and how to pre-empt it. 1pm-1.45pm Lunch 1.45pm-2pm 2pm-4pm Award Presentations The finalists of the 2017 LGPro Best Practice and Innovation in Council Plan Development Award will present a lightning talk on the key features of their nominated projects. Workshop: Crash design a behaviour change project Presented by Les Robinson, Changeologist Learn and apply some useful tools and methods to introduce change, generate change and think differently. This is essentially a crash project design session where participants will collaborate in teams on real-life organisational change challenges using some deceptively simple tools. One lucky participant on each team will walk away with a ready-made project to launch into action. 4pm-4.15pm Wrap up and awards ceremony The winners of the 2017 Corporate Planners Network Awards will be announced along with the Delegates Choice Award winner, where you get to choose the worthy recipient Council! 4.15pm 5.15pm Afternoon tea, drinks, canapes and networking A great opportunity to celebrate with the award winning Councils and catch up with peers from the sector in a relaxing atmosphere whilst enjoying some refreshments.
Conference Speakers Kate Fuelling Kate Fuelling is an information management specialist, author, optimist, and the founder of Kate Fuelling Consulting. Her purpose in life is to lead with courage, fun and respect. After many years in the information management industry, Kate founded her consulting business in 2014 in response to the frustration she felt when constrained within an organisational that s how we do things around here approach. Instead of accepting the status quo, she chose to build a business out of questioning it. Kate works with commercial and not-for-profit industries working towards a world where information, technology and processes integrate seamlessly to create extraordinary knowledge for the benefit of humankind. She believes that we should all contribute more, not just create more, and that life and work should be fun and inspiring. Les Robinson Les is a changeologist who trains, facilitates and advises all sorts of organisations on the process of designing change. He s very interested in good project design and has trained thousands of practitioners in fields like health promotion, sustainability, natural resource management, road safety and emergency services. His book Changeology is about what it takes for groups, communities and populations to do things they ve never done before. His website has a wealth of resources for change makers. Grant Meyer Grant has a strong interest in corporate planning and is an advocate for evidence based planning that leads to informed decision making. His tertiary qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Urban Planning, as well as qualifications in Urban Research and Policy and Business Management. Commencing as an Urban Planner, Grant s career spans working in both the public and private sectors. He was a founding national board member of Economic Development Australia and has also served on the Victorian Committee of the Planning Institute of Australia. Grant has held senior management positions in Local Government and has been employed as Manager of Integrated Planning at Maroondah City Council since In this role he oversees community planning, strategic land-use planning, environmental sustainability and Council planning. Sarah Young Sarah has more than 15 years experience working in various government roles in both New Zealand and Australia. Sarah has worked in both central and Local Government in Wellington and Auckland, and State and Local Government here in Melbourne. She played a key role in the amalgamation of the eight Councils that now form Auckland Council, leading four of the 21 boards that make up the new Council structure that governs more than 1.5 million residents. Sarah has held roles in public policy, service advisory and evaluation, governance, communications and marketing in Local Government and in the departments of education, training and labour, and most recently organisational strategy, planning and performance at Port Phillip City Council.
Adam Stone Adam Stone is a serial entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Speedlancer. He is also a 500 Startups alumnus and was named on the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Adam founded Speedlancer in 2014 when he was 22. With several years of experience managing and employing a global team of outsourced freelancers to run his previous six-figure profitable ecommerce telecommunications company in just ten minutes per week, he had a strong grasp on what makes freelance workforces effective. Recognising that speed and quality were a vital part of the freelancing equation often left behind in the scramble of interviewing and hiring workers, he created Speedlancer to streamline the process and make freelance outsourcing work for businesses of every size. CONFERENCE COMMITTEE Birgit King, Yarra Ranges Council Mozma Tate, Whitehorse City Council Grant Breheny, Port Phillip City Council Phil Medley, Maroondah City Council ABOUT THE CORPORATE PLANNERS NETWORK SIG The Corporate Planners Network SIG provides Local Government staff involved in corporate planning with the opportunity to come together, discuss the latest trends and developments, share problems and network.
