3 Rob Middleton MA FRCS (Orth) Rob Middleton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Service Improvement Specialist, with a proven track record in leading and implementing enhanced recovery pathways. He specializes clinically in hip surgery and has been a consultant at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for the past 12 years. In recent years he has successfully led a complete system transformation in his role as clinical lead of the Derwent centre. The Derwent is a high quality, high volume joint replacement unit based on the principles of lean, control of variation, and best clinical practice. The unit is an example of good to great and is the subject of much research and modeling. It was awarded a Dorset Healthcare Gold award in 2009 and is acknowledged as an exemplar enhanced recovery site by the Department of Health and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. Rob s success at the Derwent led to his appointment as National Clinical Lead for Hip and Knee Replacement at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement in In this role Rob has provided clinical leadership at a national level on the enhanced recovery program, and has seen him become a regular on the national and international lecture circuit. All of Rob s work is strongly underpinned by a commitment to evidenced-based practice and he has posts as a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University and a Visiting Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide.
