Discuss the different types of dementia, the changes to the brain and the behaviours staff may see in each type of dementia 2. How to communicate effectively with the person with dementia (PWD) 3. How the environment impacts on behaviour and how staff can modify the environment to reduce BPSD 4. Discuss and define Psychological Symptoms of dementia and how to manage them 5. How staff can assist in the transition from home to hospital or residential care by identifying the needs of the PWD and then providing a detailed strengths based care plan for the PWD 6. Discussion of case studies and more
2 Learning Outcomes By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to: Understand the different types of dementia and how the damaged brain impacts on behaviour Identify and develop an individualised strengths based care plan for the PWD incorporating focused diversional and psychosocial activity Be able to communicate effectively with the PWD Identify how the environment impacts on behaviour About Robyn Attoe Robyn is a Registered Nurse with a Graduate Diploma of Gerontology. She has worked extensively in Aged mental health in the community and has managed an acute psycho geriatric assessment unit. She is currently a Clinical Nurse Consultant (Cognition) in Acute Care. Robyn has presented at many conferences and has educated staff, locally, interstate and overseas in the Management of Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) using individualised plans and psychosocial interventions. Robyn won the State Nursing Excellence award 2007 for her contribution to Mental Health Nursing by developing a service to support residential care staff to manage people with dementia who exhibit BPSD. She is committed to providing quality evidence based education and consultancy to the aged care industry.
