1 2015 Course information pack Tadpole Survey and Identification Wednesday 2 December, 9am-5pm Parramatta are specialist training courses for ecologist and environmental practitioners who need to develop their skills in the survey, identification and management of the flora and fauna of eastern Australia. This event will count as 2 points per hour towards your Certified Environmental Practitioner CPD Log.
2 introduction are specialist training courses for environmental practitioners who need to develop their skills in the survey, identification and management of the fauna and flora of eastern Australia. This one-day training course will provide participants with hands-on experience in the identification of live and preserved tadpole specimens. The course also provides an overview of tadpole ecology and discussion on various survey techniques and how they can most effectively be employed and for which species. Students will learn under the guidance of leading Australian experts in frogs and tadpoles Dr Frank Lemckert and Dr Marion Anstis. Both trainers have decades of experience and knowledge to share, and will build students understanding of current legislation and specific requirements for the best practice management of our wildlife. Marion Anstis will help make the scientific identification keys accessible, and show students how to manage live tadpoles so that the morphology can be examined without injuring tadpoles, and provide useful tips on photography. 4 MEET YOUR TRAINERs About the team are convened by Dr Frank Lemckert, an internationally recognised herpetologist and forest fauna expert. About the organisers are organised by Niche Environment and Heritage, a specialist environmental and cultural heritage consultancy. Niche provides expertise in environmental assessment and approvals, biodiversity and archaeological survey, assessment, monitoring and management. Dr Frank Lemckert BSc, MSc, PhD Convener of and Principal Ecologist Niche Environment and Heritage Frank has been the convener of training courses for 20 years and has a wealth of experience to share with course attendees. He has published more than 70 scientific papers, is a member of the NSW Declining Frogs Working Group and Amphibian Specialist Group of the IUCN and was previously president of the Australian Society of Herpetologists. Frank has extensive experience in ecological survey and monitoring and aims to pass on his knowledge at School courses. Dr Marion Anstis Dip Mus Ed, PhD Frog and tadpole expert and author of Tadpoles and Frog of Australia Following a lifetime career as a highschool music teacher, Marion Anstis published two books on tadpoles and frogs, specialising in identification of tadpoles. She enrolled in a PhD by publication at Newcastle University in 2008, and continued the research for her major project, Tadpoles and Frogs of Australia, for which she was awarded a PhD in Environmental and Life Science in The book was published commercially by New Holland in 2013, and covers all Australian frogs and the life history of most. Marion has also published 22 research articles in Australian and international scientific journals. 5 2015 important information Venue Terms and conditions Niche Environment and Heritage Head Office Level 1, 19 Sorrell Street, Parramatta, NSW 2150 Inclusions Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are included in the registration fee. All participants receive course notes and a statement of attendance. Travel By train: Parramatta is the closest station. Either walk from the station (approximately 15 mins) or catch a bus from stand A4 (route M60), and alight on Church St, after Grose St. By car: Park at the nearby Entrada shopping centre (Coles, entry via Ross St), corner of Victoria Rd and Church St (early bird rate $8 per day; enter before 10am, leave before 7pm). Alternatively metered street parking is available ($2.50 per hour, max 4 hours). Meals Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are included in the registration fee. If you have a special dietary requirement please indicate this on the registration form. Registration fees and discounts The cost of this one-day course is $500 ex GST ($550 inc GST). How to pay Return your completed registration form and you will receive an invoice with EFT/bank deposit payment instructions. Your registration is confirmed when full payment has been received. Registration closes on Wednesday 18 November. What to bring Camera: A camera capable of macro photography with flash. Books: If you have a copy of Tadpoles and Frogs of Australia by Marion Anstis, please bring it. A small number of Limited Edition copies of Marion s book will be available to purchase on the day for $145 per copy, cash payment or bank transfer only. Participant numbers The course is planned to run with a minimum of ten people. The maximum number of people that can attend is 14. Cancellation policy Withdrawal from the course within two weeks of the course start date will incur a cancellation fee of $250 (ex GST). You may send a colleague from the same company or organisation in your place without incurring a cancellation fee. Confirmed participation Once your registration form is received you will be sent an invoice. Confirmation of your place on the course will not occur until payment has been received by EFT or bank deposit. Approval to attend It is the applicant s responsibility to ensure they have approval from their appropriate manager to pay for and attend this course.
