Thank you to everyone who made this outreach a success! Thank you to all the staff members who also showed up to meet our parents and community members. Our AFJROTC students did a fantastic job facilitating the parking and the members of the Student Success Team worked very hard before, during and after the event. Lots of great information was shared. The fish, grits, salad were a big hit and enjoyed by all in attendance. The KHS Trident Crew celebrated the week by saying thank you to the staff here at KHS who have a hand in making the Trident Yearbook a success. We couldn t do it without Mrs. Terri, Ms. Elana, and Mrs. Penny, said 2017 Editor, Kiara Rose as she complimented the office staff on the hard work they do fielding all the calls regarding the sales of the yearbook, ad space, and portrait day information. I have trouble keeping it straight and they have to do it and so much more. 3 New Staff KHS Success Team Job Shadow Field Trip on Wednesday, 10/5/16 Crystal Carranza Our newest staff member who joined the KHS family is Mrs. Carranza from Ft. Myers. Mrs. Carranza teaches Biology. She graduated from Southeastern University with a BS in Biology and the University of Phoenix with a MA in Education. She has been teaching all levels of biology in Lee County for the past five years and loves it. She recently relocated with her family to the area, bringing her to Kathleen. In her spare time, she enjoys running and spending time with her dogs. She is looking forward to getting to know her new Kathleen Biology students! Kathleen Students Visit Microsoft In partnership with the Junior Achievement program, the workshop allowed our students to experience the Microsoft retail store from the inside. Participants got their hands on Microsoft s latest platforms and devices. With career and interview tips shared by store associates from all walks of life, students learned that there are many paths to success! In this threehour workshop, each student heard that their occupational journey is unique to their skills, interests, and goals. If you are in Mr. Bartuska s Marine Science class, you simply WADE in! Students recently embarked on a field trip to Ft. De Soto, just south of St. Petersburg, Florida, where they were joined in their aquatic classroom (the ocean) by USF College of Marine Science Professors Dr. Angela Lodge and Dr. Teresa Greely. Students were trained in the use of a Seine Net for sampling fish populations and making fish species identification. Sound easy? Consider that this effort involved the coordinated effort of six students, their teacher, and a trained professor (each time the nets were used) to first expand and place the net, then to tow carefully and slowly close & capture the net, being careful not to let any of the marine life escape. Class members who attended the field trip included: Damian Beall, Michael Browning, Pramus Glover, Ashlynn Griffin, Mario Henry, Nathan Lambert, Matthew Rotarius, Jakyah Smith, and Dalton Thomas. These KHS scientists, sampled, measured, and identified marine life, including juvenile fish stocks needed by edible fish to grow and eventually become dinner for some angler or family. These same fish stocks, make up the lower part of the aquatic food chain presently being decimated by the Lionfish invasion in the Gulf of Mexico, the East Coast of the USA up to Rhode Island, and the Caribbean. Mr. Bartuska and the class would like to extend special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Thompson for chaperoning and to our terrific bus driver, Ms. Bullard. They competed against other 9th graders within our county. The contest consists of being able to recite the FFA Creed and a question session. Madyson, made it to the finals and went on to win the competition. Congratulations to both of our outstanding KHS FFA Creed Speakers. Florida State Visits On Monday, October 11, Florida State University, Center for Retention and Enhancement was on both campuses. Guest Speaker at CFAA CFAA students were included in a short presentation by Matthew Serymak of the Tony Jannus Distinguished Aviation Society on October 13. Students learned about the history of the foundation and about the Tony Jannus essay contest that encourages young people to learn about the incredible life and contribution of Tony Jannus, the first commercial airline pilot. The essay contest is open to students in grades For more information, go to Mr. Serymak was also able to share his own aviation experience with the students. He is a civil engineer and works for a consulting firm that has worked on designing and planning airports, including the recent renovations to Tampa International Airport. He emphasized the need for more engineers, aviation planners and aviation architects. This was a great opportunity for students to learn more about other careers involving aviation.
