ROAD WATCH: Intermittent road closures continue along 3rd St SW, between Avenues A and G SW as staff work on tie-ins to the 3rd St. water main. Manhole replacement work continues at the intersection of Ave. M SW and 8th St. SW. Ave. M SW from 7th St. SW to 9th St. SW and 8th St. SW from Ave. M SW to Ave. L SW are closed during construction. Detours are posted. The Hoppin Hunt is Saturday, March 30, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. Street closures include Lake Silver Drive from 4 th Street N.W. to 2 nd Street NW, and 3 rd Street NW from Lake Silver Drive to the southern entrance of the Senior Adult Center. The roads will be closed at 8 a.m. and will reopen at 1 p.m. The Third Street Trail and Roadway Improvements Project along Third Street SW from Magnolia Avenue to Avenue F SW begins April 1 and last through late Starting the week of April 8, significant activity including demolition of the western sidewalk will begin. Expect lane closures and detours. Pedestrian and vehicular access to all businesses will be maintained throughout the project. COMMUNITY SERVICES Join the fight against cancer! The City of Winter Haven s Relay for Life team will be having Beef O Brady s night. Just dine at the local Winter Haven Beef O Brady s on April 15 from 5 p.m. close, and bring the coupon below and Beefs will donate 20 percent of your bill to Relay for Life! The Hoppin Hunt is March 30 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 250 S. Lake Silver Dr. NW. Children are separated by age 0-3 years, 4-5 years, 6-8 years and 9 years of age. The first egg hunt begins at 10 a.m., with other age groups following. Bring your basket! This year s event includes bounce houses, a kiddie train, puppet show/story teller, crafts, and a D.J. The Police Department will offer Ident-A-Kid kits for children, and the Fire Department will bring the fire truck. The Bunny will also make a special appearance for pictures. There is even a free raffle drawing in which children can enter to win baskets and parents can enter to win prizes from local restaurants. For more information, call the Winter Haven Senior Adult Center at Easter Sunday Sunrise Service at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park - March 31, 6:30 a.m. The service is coordinated by the Winter Haven Interfaith Ministerial Alliance and the Winter Haven Ministerial Association. To help lead in worship along with several area ministers, Pastor Arthur Salary of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church will be preaching. Mr. Joe Jones will lead in music. Park and Trail Planning - Andy Palmer, The Third Street Trail and Roadway Improvements Project along Third Street SW from Magnolia Avenue to Avenue F SW begins April 1 and last through late Improvements include reducing the four lane roadway to two lanes; building an eight-foot trail on the east side of the roadway; placing a six foot sidewalk on the west side; creating on-street parking; and installing period lighting, rain gardens and landscaping. This is a continuation of downtown revitalization, the trail expansions and beautification efforts. Much of the funding is from a Florida Department of Transportation grant. During construction, one northbound lane will be maintained for traffic. Watch for detours. All properties and businesses in the area will be accessible throughout the project. Chain O Lakes Complex Jen Young, Discovery Camp is an enrichment based camp for Kindergarten graduates through 14 years of age, and offers field trips, games, sports, crafts, swimming and more. Lunch is provided. Discounts and scholarships are available for City residents. Registration begins Monday, April 8, 8 a.m. 6 p.m. and continues Monday Friday until program is full. Location: Chain O Lakes Complex; Monday Friday; 7:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Session 1: June 17 July 12; Session 2: July 15 - August 9. Fee is $ per session Resident; and $266 per session Non-resident. Rotary Park Playground Camp is for kindergarten graduates through 12 years of age who are City residents. It runs Monday Friday, June 17 - August 9 from 7:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. and includes games,

4 sports, crafts, swimming and more. Lunch is provided. The cost is $80, and discounts and scholarships are available. Registration begins Monday, May 6 from 6 8 p.m. at Rotary Park and continues at the Chain O Lakes Complex, Monday Friday, 9 a.m. 6 p.m. until program is full. Winter Haven Recreational and Cultural Center Joyce Patrick, Pitch, Hit and Run is a FREE national program that gives boys and girls ages 7-14 the opportunity to showcase their baseball abilities. This event is April 20 at 9 a.m. Registration begins March 18 and ends April 18; registration forms can be picked up at WHRCC. For more information call Calling all Pool players! Mark your calendars and sharpen up your game! A free singles 8-ball pool tournament is May 11 at 10 a.m. Anyone 13 years of age and older are welcome to participate. Preregistration is required. Deadline to register is May 9. For additional information, please call Baton Twirling classes for girls 5 and older are Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $25 City-resident and $35 non-resident. There is a drop-in fee of $8 per class. Participants will develop sportsmanship, confidence and leadership abilities and have the opportunity to participate in local competition. Need a place to burn some calories and get fit at no cost? Exercise machines, weight benches, squat racks and free-weights are available from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Netball for girls 15 and older is every Tuesday. This free activity is a women s sport that is a fast skillful team game based on running, jumping, throwing and catching. American Kenpo Karate is every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8 p.m. for adults and children, ages 6 and older. The cost is $45 per month for City-residents; $55 for non-residents; or a drop-in fee of $10 per class for City-residents and $11 for non-residents. Summer Fun at the Rec is for kindergarten graduates through 13 years of age who are City residents. It runs Monday Friday, June 17 August 9 from 7:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. and includes sports, games, crafts, guest speakers, swimming and more! Lunch is provided. The cost is $80. Discounts and scholarships are available to those who qualify. Registration begins Monday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Winter Haven Recreational and Cultural Center. WINTER HAVEN FIRE DEPARTMENT The Brotherhood Ride is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public charity organization dedicated to honoring emergency responders who died in the line of duty, with a mission to provide emotional and financial support to their families. The organization is comprised of volunteers, who are themselves emergency responders. Other than the cost of conducting the rides, all donated proceeds go directly to the beneficiaries designated. No one is compensated for their time to maximize the impact of donations. This is the third year Lieutenant Firefighter/Paramedic David Heilman has ridden with the Brotherhood Ride (BHR) representing the Winter Haven Fire Department. The 2013 ride is dedicated to five police officers and one firefighter from Florida, one police officer from Virginia and one fire chief from Tennessee. The BHR will honor them by traveling through Florida and onto Tennessee in nine days covering over 700 miles. The ride begins in Brooksville May 3, and ends in Decaturville, TN May 11. Come learn about the Peace Creek Watershed during a recreational kayak tour hosted by UF/IFAS Polk County Extension and the City of Winter Haven s Natural Resources Division. Enjoy a free day on the water learning about common lakefront issues, wildlife habitat, aquatic plant identification, and much more. Due to available kayaks, space is limited to 13 people. Personal kayaks and canoes are welcome to join, just no motorized boats please. These tours will be physically demanding. Please dress for the heat and bring water.
