The Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) released proposed Updated Floodplain Maps known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), which are available at Use the Map Index sheet to identify the FIRM Map Number that covers the area of your interest within the City s limits. The new FIRMs will show the extent to which areas of the County are at risk for flooding. The remapping effort is part of FEMA s nationwide flood mapping to update flood hazard and risk information shown on the flood maps. The current maps are based on studies done over 30 years ago. Drainage patterns have changed, new land development has occurred, and mapping and modeling technology has significantly improved. The 90-day public comment period has begun and will end in August. During this time, property owners can submit appeals and comments if they can show the maps are technically or scientifically in error. Once the appeals and comments are received and addressed, the maps are expected to become effective in summer Flood insurance requirements related to the new map information will take effect.
