Calling All Readers Volunteer Opportunity Do you have any spare time? Do you enjoy reading out loud? If so, we have a wonderful volunteer opportunity for you! The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) is a community-based literacy and social program for adults in our community with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For the book club members who are not able to read, we provide them with a device that will read for them. We need volunteers who can record books for us onto these devices. Most books are on or around a sixth grade reading level. We will provide you with the book and training on how to use the device. You can record at your leisure, from your own home. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please sign up at the front desk at Everett Senior Center. Dates and times to be announced. Bob s Your Uncle Sometimes we say the silliest things, but feel free on October 13 to use as many silly sayings as you want, for it s Silly Saying Day. When pigs fly is a saying used when you mention something that will never happen, just like a pig flying. Did you ever stop to chew the fat with a friend? This means to chat or gossip, but it s a nautical expression from early sailors who, when work was slow, would talk while chewing on a snack of salt-hardened fat. You ve likely never used the expression enough to cobble dogs with, which means that you have a lot of something, just as if a shoe cobbler had so much leather he could make many tiny shoes for all of our four-legged friends. And there you have it, Bob s your uncle. Don t know that one? It means everything is all right, done, and successful, sort of like saying, And that s that. No word, though, on who Bob was or why things always worked out so great for him.

October Birthdays In astrology, those born between October 1st and 22nd balance the scales of Libra. Libras seek equality, justice, and harmony. Eager to cooperate, Libras are charming diplomats who seek compromise and good will. Those born between October 23rd and 31st are Scorpios. Scorpios are passionate and assertive leaders who value honesty and fairness above all, but betray a Scorpio and suffer the scorpion sting. Befriend a Scorpio and you will have not just a friend for life, but an advocate and confidant. 6 October 2016 Pg. 6 NEYLAND STADIUM The present day Neyland Stadium, Shields-Watkins Field, had its beginning in Col. W.S. Shields, president of Knoxville's City National Bank and a UT trustee, provided the initial capital to prepare and equip an athletic field. Thus, when the field was completed in March 1921, it was called Shields-Watkins Field in honor of the donor and his wife, Alice Watkins-Shields. The first game was played on September 24, 1921, a win against Emory and Henry (Happy 95 th Birthday Neyland Stadium!). The stadium, apart from the field it grew to enclose, came to bear its own distinguished name -- Neyland Stadium. It was named for the man most responsible for the growth and development of Tennessee's proud football tradition. General Robert R. Neyland served as head coach from , with two interruptions for military service. The history and tradition of Tennessee football began when Gen. Robert Reese Neyland came to Tennessee as an ROTC instructor and backfield coach in 1925 and was named head football coach in From that date, Tennessee was in the college football arena to stay. Neyland, who came to Tennessee as an Army captain and left as a brigadier general, brought one of the most efficient single-wing offenses in the country to go with an unyielding defense. It was Gene McEver who kicked off the Neyland era with his 98-yard return of the opening kickoff in the 1928 Alabama game, a game the underdog Vols won Each of his succeeding eras would be highlighted by similar big plays. Johnny Butler's 56-yard run against Alabama in 1939 and Hank Lauricella's 75-yard run against Texas in the 1951 Cotton Bowl. Neyland's 1939 Vols were the last to shut out each of its regular season opponents. Over the course of his career, 112 of 216 opponents failed to score against his Tennessee teams and the Vols still own an NCAA record for holding opponents scoreless for 71 consecutive quarters. Neyland's teams won Southern Conference titles in 1927 and 1932, piling up undefeated streaks of 33 and 28 games along the way, and SEC championships in 1938, 1939, 1940, 1946 and In addition, Neylandcoached teams won four national championships. His legacy continues to live through his name on the football stadium, the indoor football complex and the road paralleling the Tennessee River. Neyland Stadium Attendance: Since attendance records were first kept beginning in the 1946 season, more than 25 million fans have watched Big Orange football in Neyland Stadium. An average of 68,925 fans have attended 364 games in 58 years. That statistic is one that promises to climb each year, as Tennessee football enthusiasts pack the stadium each autumn Saturday the Vols are home. Average attendance has been on climb since 1946, when an average of 31,167 saw six home contests. Tennessee success at Shields-Watkins Field: In 82 seasons and 509 games, the Vols are at home, a winning percentage of.799. Largest Crowd: 109,061 - Sept. 18, 2004 Tennessee 30, Florida 28.

Some of us are reserved and dignified, with a few near the other end of the spectrum-candid and colorful. But you know what? We not only make it work, but we like being part of such a diverse group. We have learned to enjoy and applaud our differences. Perhaps that is a teeny-tiny contribution to the overall peace and harmony that we all so fervently wish for. Besides, it makes us get out of bed, get dressed in our trademark red and purple, get out of the house, and enjoy somebody else s cooking. Wrap all that together in a pretty package and we really, really do appreciate each other. We are the RED HOT HATTERS. Visit us if you dare. Third Friday each month 10:00 a.m. at the Everett Senior Center. Call our leader, Ursula Endsley, at for more information. Stop by the front desk and we can look up your renewal date. Thanks for your support of what we ESC!
