10 10 Blue Hill Fair Handbook Skillet toss a show of female strength The Women s Skillet Toss is a fair favorite, where iron skillets are tossed down a center line. Any distance off the center line is deducted from the total, and anyone stepping over the line is summarily honked at by an air horn and disqualified. The World s Women are invited to the Intercontinental and Greater Hancock County Women s Skillet Toss Championship, set for Sunday, September 1, at 4 p.m. in front of the grandstand. Last year, Stacy Connor topped out her second skillet at 80 feet, 6 inches. The judges had to get a second tape measure to reach the spot where her skillet landed. Connor competed in the Kittens category, one of four divisions by age, with first and second place winners in each division. The fair will provide skillets, and each contestant will have two throws. These winners will compete together in a throw-off to determine champion and reserve champion skillet tossers. 5. Throw will be straight out of the course; distance off center line will be subtracted off score. 6. Crossing the foul line will result in disqualification. Register at the Main Office/Sound Booth before the event, and warm up your tossing arm to get ready to compete in a field of 100 or more women! Rules 1. Open to the world s women. 2. Skillet provided by the Fair. 3. Each contestant will have two throws. 4. No practice throws will be allowed during the competition. All entries must contain beef as one of the ingredients. Along with the prepared dish, submit a list of ingredients and a complete recipe. Two judges will try each entry, and select the best. In the event that they can t agree, a third judge will taste their favorites and decide on the winner. The winner will be awarded a cash prize. After the judges deliberate, the winner is announced and the prizes are awarded, everyone is welcome to try all the beef recipes in Blue Hill. 11 Child Identification Program The Blue Hill Fair, in cooperation with the Freemasons of Maine and Ira Berry Lodge #128 of Blue Hill, as well the Nichols Day Camp of Blue Hill, will play host on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, to the Child Identification Program (CHIP). This is a free service offered by the Freemasons of Maine with the help of other organizations in the Masonic family including Rainbow, DeMolay, Eastern Star and Shrine, according to a press release. Working in concert with law enforcement officials and dental professionals, the Freemasons provide fingerprinting, tooth printing and videotaping services designed to create a personal record that is used to identify a child in case of an abduction or other emergency. These records remain in the parents possession and could be used to provide law enforcement officials with three key tools for identifying a child. The program is endorsed by the Maine Dental Association, the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). These organizations recognize this program as one of the most comprehensive child identification programs in the nation. Through the generosity of Bud and Jeannette Gilmore, owners of Smokey s Greater Shows, the first 100 children participating in this program will receive one free carnival ride pass. Program hours: Saturday, August 31, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, September 1, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information contact Dennis Rackliffe at or the Blue Hill Fair at Colwell Diesel Service Ellsworth We service what we sell Try our kind of warmth this winter! With all the excitement and action at the fair, it s good to know there s a place to check in if either of these events occurs. Lost children will be taken to the Hancock County Sheriff s Department office, located near the foot gate entrance to the fair. Parents should also report their missing children here. The sheriffs are pretty efficient at finding either a child or his parents, Fair Superintendent Rob Eaton says. Lost items should also be reported to the sheriff s department office, and that s also where to go when searching for the lost item. At the end of the Fair, Eaton says, all items go to the sheriff s department in Ellsworth, where owners can hope to find them. After the fair, call the sheriff at For first aid and medical emergencies, an ambulance and crew is standing by at all times near the secretary s office, just inside the foot gate. 13 14 Blue Hill Fair Handbook Fair celebrates 100 years of 4-H in Maine by Anne Berleant The first 4-H club in Maine started as a potato club in Portland. 15 16 Blue Hill Fair Handbook Blue Hill Fair: Part planning and preparation, part magic by Faith DeAmbrose There is a perception that the fair just pretty much happens; at least that is what it looks like from the outside, said Fair Superintendent Rob Eaton recently of the annual Blue Hill Fair. Maybe it s his 16 years of experience talking, but Eaton, who spends the better part of the year working to plan the fair, said the seemingly effortless task of executing the fair is the result of hard work, not only from him, but from a dedicated board of directors who know the meaning of the words hands-on. The Labor Day weekend-long event ushers in the end of the summer season and provides a meeting ground for many in the community who have finally slowed from months of hard work. In its 122nd year, the fair is part tradition and part entertainment, and the nighttime view of the Ferris wheel dwarfed by Blue Hill Mountain never gets old. The Blue Hill Fair (technically called the Hancock County Agricultural Society) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary mission is to showcase agricultural activities. It is run by a board of directors that meets regularly, with its day-to-day activities carried out by Eaton. So what constitutes the day-to-day activities for Eaton? There is a range, he explains. Three weeks ago he was fixing drainage with a piece of heavy equipment by the front gates; three months ago he was booking acts and touching base with vendors. I don t think it ever really ends, or begins it just continues, he said of the actual process Lowell Hill Pottery See us in the Exhibition Hall! In January, said Eaton, he starts to think about what is called the premium book, which lists the rules and regulations for the various agricultural events. It lays out the instructions for exhibitors and competitors in all activities ranging from flowers and art to harness racing and oxen pulling, as well as all the fuss associated with each entry and the prize monies to be awarded. Once that is complete, discussions with the department superintendents are renewed (and there are 10 different areas for which administration is needed) and focus is paid to There s no fair like The Blue Hill Fair! While all this is happening, said Eaton, there are acts to book and questions to answer, all with the goal of keeping everything moving forward. Now, in April and May things really start to happen, he said, adding that by then most of the acts are booked and the information is complete enough to begin listing on the fair s website. After May the pace picks up considerably, said Eaton, who begins to field many more phone calls and s daily. There are about 70 vendors at the fair annually, and approximately 150 employees who all must be contacted. And when possible, Eaton prefers to use local vendors for whatever he can. Now, there are fairs where one company brings in the vendors, but we book everything ourselves so that way we can keep things local and can keep the money in the community. In terms of having a formula for the fair s success, Eaton insists on keeping the core of the fair activities roughly the same each year, but allowing for new and interesting acts to spice things up. For the last two years, the fair administration has opted out of its end-of-the-fair headlining music act and has gone to a monster Continued on page 17

It s tough to compete on that level so we thought we would try something completely different and so far it s worked, said Eaton. Once fair weekend rolls around, said Eaton, both he and the entire board of directors are on site most of the time; and because Blue Hill YMCA s inaugural 5K road race Wilbur s Run Saturday, August 31, 7 a.m. registration, 8 a.m. start, in front of the Grandstand The Blue Hill YMCA and Homeward Farm is sponsoring the Blue Hill Fair s first ever Wilbur s 5K & Fun Run. However, every once in a while there is something that needs immediate attention which is when a multi-talented board of directors comes in handy. Recounting a story from 12 years ago, Eaton said that at the beginning of a music show at the grandstand, a sheriff s deputy alerted the administration that the weight from the packed venue had caused a walkway to break. Eaton said the sheriff s deputy made sure no one walked on the walkway Wilbur is the famous pig of Charlotte s Web, who goes from being an underdog in life to a champion pig, thanks to his good friend, Charlotte, Bragdon continued. In the interest of keeping this a great community with strong family values and a Blue Hill Fair Handbook 17 and Eaton and the board of directors climbed under the grandstand with a selection of tools and made the repairs while the show was going on. When the music stopped, we stopped working, said Eaton, adding that no one was the wiser and the problem was fixed by the time the show was over. 18 Blue Hill Fair Handbook 19 Tradition and change at the Flower Show by Lyra Fuchs The Flower Show, like so much else at the fair, is steeped in years and years of tradition. Specifically, superintendent Jane Candage Moon said, that of foliage. All flower entries have to include foliage, which is a steadfast tradition that goes back way before my time, Moon said. I haven t tinkered with it. However, that s not to say that each year stays exactly the same. Because flowers depend on the weather, each year s changing climate brings changing flowers. The weather plays a large role in the entries, and so it s impossible to predict this year s [entries], Moon said. But this uncertainty hasn t stopped her from developing the premiums the special themed contests that come with greater prizes. There are two adult premiums, and one kids only division. This year, adults will compete to win Lady in Red, the best arrangement of red flowers, and There s a Hole in the Bucket, in which they fill a rusty container with their flowers. Kids can enter the Candyland contest, a garden scene constructed from candy. Last year, Eyleen Sivigny won both adult division premiums. Eight-year-old Cameron Astle won the kids-only Mexican Fiesta premium. Thirty-one exhibitors entered the Flower Show, with 285 total entries. Garden clubs can exhibit in their own special division. To attract more garden clubs, the clubs aren t being judged and are instead asked to simply show exhibits, with a cash gratuity just for entering. We re asking them to show us some of the features of their programs in their communities, Moon said, [and] we re hoping to have a good turnout. Mary Blackstone, the chairman of Ellsworth Garden Club s Publicity Committee, agreed. The club won last year s Garden Club Exhibit Contest, but Blackstone sees the changes in a positive Dahlias at last year s flower show. Photo by Jessica Brophy light. It s really good that the fair has chosen to profile garden clubs and what they do for the community. Whether a garden club, adult, or child, this year s Flower Show offers many opportunities for success, provided all entries have foliage. Moon offers simple words of advice to hopeful winners: You want top quality flowers. Nasturtiums wait to be judged at last year s flower show. Photo by Jessica Brophy

19 20 Blue Hill Fair Handbook Night of Destruction brings back Monster Trucks Monster trucks are returning to the Blue Hill Fair in a repeat of last year s fair-ending headliner Night of Destruction Monster Truck Show. The fair tried something new last year when it replaced its traditional headliner band with monster trucks, and it worked, said Fair Superintendent Rob Eaton. The culminating event of the 2012 fair, the show lived up to the hype and drew a capacity crowd to the Grandstand Stage. Spectators were lined around the stage, up and down the fencing to the area and even standing on top of cars and vehicles to get a glimpse. This year s show is on Monday, September 2, at 6 p.m. An autograph pit party will be held at 5 p.m. FMX motorcycle stunt team Saturday August 31, 3 and 7 p.m., Grandstand Tim Dyson s FMX motorcycle team returns for a third year of daredevil stunts at the Blue Hill Fair. Dyson is a professional Freestyle MotoCross Rider who brings his team to the grandstand to showcase tricks like backflips, the Cliffhanger, the Superman Seat Grab, the Wingman and the Look Back Helicopter. Dyson, who has been riding since he was 6 years old, according to his brochure, has participated in FMX events all over the world, from biker rallies to country fairs. Last year, the grandstand and adjacent stage area was standing room only as the team took to the sky and then came back to earth in a two-wheel stunt show that many will return to at this year s fair.
