Come celebrate one of Cottey s oldest and most special traditions. Following a candlelight chapel service, participants will go caroling and adorn the campus with evergreen wreaths. Hanging of the Greens Semiformal Dance Saturday, December 3, at 9 p.m a.m. Hinkhouse Gym Celebrate the holiday season with the final event of the Hanging of the Greens tradition. Sponsored by Inter- Society, this semiformal dance will feature a theme to complement the week of activities. Instrumental Music Concert Sunday, December 4, at 3:00 p.m. Center for the Arts, Auditorium The Cottey Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble perform music spanning over 300 years of history: from the Baroque Era to present day. Highlights include The Liberty Bell by John Phillip Sousa, Chaconne from First Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst, and It Don t Mean A Thing by Duke Ellington. She passed away on November 21. Visitation was on Friday, November 25, at the Schoedigger Norris Chapel in Grove City, Ohio. The burial was held on Saturday, November 26, at Vinton Memorial Cemetery. 3 From the Center for Women's Leadership NHS My Life Program The Center for Women s Leadership hosted 200 freshman and sophomore girls and 40 adult women mentors for the Nevada High School My Life program on Tuesday, November 22. After Dr. Weitzel offered a Cottey welcome, the students travelled to small group presentations with messages of encouragement and empowerment. Denise Carrick Hedges, along with special guest Sue Vicory from the Serenbetz Institute National Advisory Council, presented a breakout session titled #UnSelfie where each of the 240 guests wrote a note of inspiration that was delivered on Giving Tuesday to a middle school girl or senior at the senior center. Design Thinking Workshop Monday, December 5 6:00-8:45 p.m., RFAB 203 Design Thinking is fast becoming a mainstay in business strategy all around the world. Centered around creativity, empathy, and putting the user's needs as the heart of the problem, Design Thinking is seen as an important tool for driving innovation. The Design Thinking Workshop is supported by the Marjorie W. Smith Leadership Seminar Fund. RSVP at

4 Student Happenings Student Music Recitals On Monday, November 21, and Tuesday, November 29, Cottey music students presented two recitals, featuring voice, piano, strings, brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments. (See photos from two performances). Theatre Production to Festival The theatre department s production of The Moors is entered in The American College Theater Festival and was recently held for consideration to participate in the regional festival in Des Moines, Iowa, in January. The department will be notified by December 16 if they have been selected to bring their entire play to the festival. The holding of the play in itself is a significant status as the work is considered to be exemplary. Additionally, Victoria Frazee, Carley Bader and Bridget McKeon were nominated to participate in Irene Ryan acting auditions at the regional festival. Kathryn Kettle, Mason Keefe and Megan Mahoney will enter the design expo at the regional festival. Director Laura Chaney will travel with students at the end of January to participate in The American College Theater festival, regardless of whether the entire production is chosen. The festival will provide students with workshops, professional feedback on work and the opportunity to view some of the best plays in our region.

5 Wellness Program Art After Dark! Thank you to everyone who participated in ornament making on Friday, November 18. Here are some of the creative items created by employees on their wood and porcelain ornaments! Wellness Time for 2017 Employees will receive a Spring 2017 Wellness Activity Enrollment Form in their box next week. Employees should sign-up for spring wellness activities and Wellness Time using this form. With supervisor approval, employees are allowed to use 1/2 hour of release time twice a week if he/she will commit to exercising for 60 minutes using personal time during the same week. Employees should plan to use Wellness Time in the campus Fitness Center or through activities that start and end at the College, like walking, jogging, biking. Faculty Notes Dr. Amanda Cook, assistant professor of music, attended the Annual Meeting of the National Association of Schools of Music in Dallas, Texas, on November This is Cottey College's 60th year as an accredited member of NASM.

6 Human Resources Flu Shots It's that time again - preparing for the flu season. BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas City will pay for the flu vaccination if you are a Cottey employee (and/or dependent) who is covered by the Cottey Health Plan. The flu vaccination is free from in-network providers. You must call your health care provider and make an appointment in order to receive the vaccination. Members may also go to: Wal-Mart, CVS, or Walgreens and the flu shot would be covered at 100%. United Way Contribution Forms Employees should have received United Way enrollment/contribution forms in campus mail. Please return your contribution to Betsy McReynolds in Main Hall. It s a great way to give back to our local community in the form of tax-free payroll deduction. They are due by Friday, December 2 (TODAY!) If you misplaced your form, please call Betsy McReynolds or Adam Dean for a new one. Now Hiring The Office of Human Resources has posted internally the position of the assistant to the Vice President for Student Life effective January Requirements for interested applicants include a minimum of three years secretarial experience and proficiency in Microsoft products. Excellent grammar, and written and verbal communication skills are a must. This is a full-time, 12-month position. Interested candidates should apply at Main Hall reception desk by Friday, December 9. Winter Break The College will close at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22!! Please keep your offices open during the noon hour (if possible) that day and schedule lunches from 11:00 to noon and/or noon 1:00 p.m. Before you leave for winter break, remember to program your office voic and accounts to indicate that the College will be closed from 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22 until 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, Check with the Vice President in your area if you have any questions. Flex Spending 2017 Flex Spending forms for 2017 have been sent via this week to all employees. The enrollment forms can also be found on the Cottey intranet in the Faculty/Staff portal. If you wish to enroll for the 2017 calendar year, you must do so by December 31, 2016.

7 From Institutional Advancement Cottey College recently received a treasured gift from a beloved retired faculty member. Dr. Nancy Haynes, professor emerita of drama and speech, taught at Cottey from 1958 to 1964 and from 1980 to Those that recall Dr. Haynes, do so with fondness and respect. Nancy Kerbs, director of assessment and institutional research, remains close friends with Dr. Haynes and helped to make this gift possible. The gift is a collection of nine sterling silver Metropolitan Museum of Art snowflake Christmas ornaments. They are absolutely beautiful! The snowflakes have been arranged on three pre-lit wreaths that have been hung in the front room of the Helen and George Washburn Center for Women s Leadership. We are grateful to Dr. Haynes for sharing this treasure with us and to Nancy for her helping to facilitate this gift. We ask that you bring one salad, veggie, dessert, or other item and consider joining others to provide a dish. Holiday sweaters, including ugly sweaters, and jeans are appropriate. A series of drawings for holiday gifts, including a 32" flat-panel TV, time with Karen Polon for personal training, and five hours with Helen Lodge for geneological research, will be held!
