1 COWETA FAYETTE CAR SHOW DRIVES SUCCESSFUL FUND- RAISING 5 DISTRICT TREE PROJECT: NOW IS THE TIME TO ORDER A FOREST 6 District news 6900 ISSUE 2 August 2011 Happy 98th Birthday Atlanta! We all know the story 4 men got together and decided to create a civic club that would consist of business leaders working together to make their community a better place. And they were phenomenally successful, eventually spreading the Rotary world far beyond their backyard. Of course I am talking about Irwin Allen, Henry Grady, Evelyn Harris and Howard Geldert right here in Atlanta! You might have thought I was referring to Paul Harris and his friends, but these four men are the ones who brought Rotary to Georgia so you and I could eventually become Rotarians. This month on August 1, is the Rotary Club of Atlanta s 98 th birthday. They were the first Rotary club in Georgia and have spawned 10 other Rotary clubs across the state. From the very beginning, they have been an aggressive club, leading the way in service and leadership. In Atlanta s Legacy: 6 Rotary Clubs in District 6900 Atlanta West End Buckhead Decatur Marietta Midtown Atlanta Roswell and more for a total of 10 across Georgia MARGIE WATCH chartered in 1913, they lobbied, successfully, for the 1917 National Rotary Convention in Atlanta. (You have to read the story of them shipping Georgia watermelons to a convention as part of their campaign!). The Rotary International President for was from the Atlanta club Bert Adams. Atlanta has always stepped up. Today is no different. The Atlanta club continues to be one of the largest clubs in the world with a little over 500 members who represent virtually every major business in the Atlanta area. They are home to one of only three Arch Klumph Society members in the district and were recently recognized in New Orleans as number 3 in the world for per capita giving to PolioPlus. And their service projects reflect the giant heart of this club! They range from working with homeless people in Atlanta to improved maternal and infant care in Moscow. Atlanta took the initiative on clean water in Kenya putting in millions of dollars to provide drinking water to hundreds of villages. Every year they conduct projects in literacy, clean water, health and new generations. One project that really caught my attention is the ongoing annual seminar entitled You and the American Economy conducted for high school seniors and their teachers. They have been delivering this for decades what a great way to build the entrepreneurial spirit in Georgia! Every Rotary club in 6900 is special and every visit I make confirms the greatness of this district. So this month, take a minute to say thank you to the Rotary Club of Atlanta for creating this opportunity for all of us to experience Service Above Self! 3 NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT AND ROTARY INTERNATIONAL The Challenge is On! PDG Bill Woulfin, District 6900 Foundation Chair The month is July and the new year s figures are starting to come in. I personally would like to challenge you to look at what the Dunwoody Club has done in month one of the new year. 1. The club is a 100% Sustaining Member Club for Their annual giving is at $21,750 which equals $ per capita 3. They have 21 new Paul Harris Fellows 4. They have one new Paul Harris Society Member 5. They have one new major donor. The club has a tradition of giving and wants to set an example of the supporting the Foundation during DG Margie s year. Why don t you join them and make this the best year the District has ever had in annual giving. Find a new Paul Harris Fellow in your club, a Paul Harris Society Member or a Major Donor. Remember we want every club to be an EREY club. Last year we had over 1200 Rotarians in the District that gave zero to the Foundation. If these members are in your club, ask them to give something. Because of your gift to the Annual Programs Fund A young girl in the Dominican Republic enjoys a glass of clean water from one of over 2300 filters installed in the area. Keep sending in grant requests. Under Future Vision we continue to process grants all year. If your grant was submitted last year and was in process, it is still in process and you will hear back from the Foundation. While I always ask you to give, it is just as important to get. Submit your grant requests and do the work for which we are known. We are a great district because we give and we DO GOOD STUFF. This is a short report because you will receive a separate Foundation letter this month that will be a summary of last year. Be proud of what we have accomplished as a District, as Clubs, and as individuals. Learn About The Rotary Foundation in Columbus Registration for the Foundation Seminar on August 6th is now open in the District Database. Please go online and register now. Plan to attend if you are a club president, a president elect, a foundation chair, a director in any area of service that could do a Foundation project, or a club treasurer. Our featured speaker will be Past RI Director Mark Maloney - a member of the team who created Future Vision. We will have a special session for the treasurers on how to raise Foundation funds. Of course, bring along any other members that have an interest in the Foundation or just want to learn more about it! This is a great learning opportunity! Quitman and Pelham Rotarians Stand Up for The Foundation Under the leadership of immediate Past President Corey Cottles, the Rotary Club of Quitman has become Foundation aware. During his year as president, contributions to the Foundation reached 122% of the amount he pledged for the club. The club is now well on its way to being a 100% Sustaining Member Club and is looking at a goal of becoming a 100% PHF Club! GO QUITMAN! Leading the way by example is Dr. Charlene Blache, a practicing pediatrician in Quitman who demonstrates vocational service in her everyday life. Generous by nature, she has now stepped forward with her commitment to be a new member of the Paul Harris Society. She was recently honored by her Club and Assistant Governor Don Robinson. THANK YOU ROTARIAN DR CHARLENE! When the Rotary Club of Pelham had its annual dinner and installed its new administration, 12 Paul Harris Awards were presented to club members, former members, partners and members of the community who had made significant contributions to the city. This club of 31 members now has 172 Paul Harris Fellows thanks to the commitment its members to the Rotary Foundation. 3

4 CLUB NEWS AND NEWS FOR CLUBS Celebrating Our Georgia Rotary Heritage! Rotary president Lisa Collins, right, is pictured with one of two plaques honoring past Rotary presidents and long time Rotarians and past presidents Charles DeLoach, left, with wife Val, and Robert Collier with wife Alicia. Happy July and August Club Birthdays Rotary Club of Camilla - 66 years old - founded July 5, 1945, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Moultrie Rotary Club of Bainbridge - 75 years old - founded July 15, 1936, sponsored by the Rotary Cub of Thomasville Rotary Club of Atlanta - 98 years old founded August 1, 1913, sponsored by Rotary International Remembering 85 Years of Service in Blakely Blakely Rotarians and guests gathered at the Blakely Town and Country Club in June to celebrate the Rotary Club of Blakely s 85th anniversary. The community s first service club, the Rotary Club was organized on June 22, 1926, in a Charter Night with the sponsoring Rotary Club of Albany. During the past 85 years, the club has taken on many noteworthy projects in service to both the community and in support of The Rotary Foundation projects, including the eradication of polio. The Rotary Club has been instrumental in a number of vital projects for the community through the years beginning with Blakely s first gym, the old wooden shell. Built in the 1920s, it was still being used for PE classes until the R. K. Sites Gymnasium was built in the school year. In the late 1920s, a team of Rotarians went to Tennessee to purchase pure bred Jersey cows and bring them back to Early County to sell for milk production. In the 40s and 50s, the Club fostered beef cattle production by sponsoring cattle shows and encouraging 4-H and FFA members to produce pure bred beef cattle. In the early 1930s the club led a successful school consolidation effort. Under the leadership of Rotarian Raymond Singletary,, the club educated local farmers against early spring burning that destroyed forests. The Club s landmark project was its efforts to establish Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park. In 1937 the Club raised $12,000 for the purchase of more than 1000 acres of land which was donated to the state for the park. In 1999, the Club partnered with the park to continue the Kolomoki Fall Festival. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Blakely, the town has a great library that the club helped build, and is home to the Early County Museum. 4

5 CLUB NEWS AND NEWS FOR CLUBS Coweta Fayette Car Show Drives Successful Fundraising That s not the only car story coming out of Coweta Fayette Rotary Club. Upon leaving a recent Monday night Rotary meeting, Rotarians Sam Morris (State Farm Insurance) and Rick Barnes (Minuteman Press) spotted a lady with a flat tire on the side of the road and immediately stopped to change the tire for her. This is a fine example of "Service Above Self". The Coweta Fayette Rotary Club held its 4 th annual Chassis For Charity Car Show in May. This year, NAPA Auto Parts, Sam s Club, Minuteman Press of Peachtree City, UBS Financial Services of Alpharetta, Southtowne Motors, Earl s Quality Care, Randall s Rods and Restorations, BMW and Mini of South Atlanta, State Farm Insurance and Schachle Benefit Services were all sponsors of the event. The club raised more funds than they ever have with the event the rain held off for the day and they ended up with over 60 cars in the show. A sponsor appreciation event was held the evening of June 27 th where a brief video about the various organizations and causes the club supports including Polio Plus and The Rotary Foundation was shown along with a presentation of a commemorative plaque was given to each. President John Hughes is shown presenting a plaque to Dixie and Earl Randall. The International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians (IFSR) is one of more than 90 Rotary Fellowship and Action Groups established to bring together Rotarians with similar interests from around the world. It is made up of Rotarians who are or were Scouters or members of the Worldwide Scouting/Guiding Movement. The aim of IFSR is to develop a strong association inter-nationally between Rotarians and associates who are, or have been, active members and/or supporters of the Scouting movement worldwide. Are there Rotarians in your club who work with Boy or Girl Scouts who are not members of IFSR? If so, have them obtain and submit their application through the following web site: It s a great organization for Rotarian Scouters. For additional information, contact Cam Sutherland, District Boy Scout & IFSR Coordinator, at: (home), (cell) or via cbsutherland@bellsouth.net. North Fulton Rotary Council - Out to Make a Difference in Left to Right: John Bowers ( Rotary Club of Windward), Bo Wagner ( President, Rotary Club of North Fulton) Elwyn Gaissert (Rotary Club of Roswell, & RLI Discussion Leader), Shirley House ( President, Rotary Club of Johns Creek of North Fulton), Jim Squire ( Vice President, Rotary Club of Sandy Springs),, Sally Wyeth ( President, Rotary Club of Sandy Springs), Chris Mixon ( President, Rotary Club of Windward), Harvey Smith (Past President, Roswell Rotary Club), Dave McCleary ( President, Rotary Club of Roswell), Ron Redner (District 6900 Assistant Governor & Past President Rotary Club of Roswell). to Forsyth-Monroe for this marketing tidbit: Once you read your Rotarian Magazine, donate it to your local library OR place it in your doctor/dentist/etc office with a sticker telling them how to contact your club! Genius!! CONGRATS 5

6 CLUB NEWS AND NEWS FOR CLUBS Rotarians At Work The Rotary Club of Cuthbert had a great turn out of Rotarians who volunteered their time at the Randolph County Health Fair. Eleven Rotarians, including President Jennifer Davis, showed up bright-eyed and bushy tailed on a rainy Saturday to lend their support for this great event. President Jennifer Davis of Cuthbert with Past President Jimmy Carter Griffin Hears Ideas for Reducing Carbon Footprint Julie Paul, Environmental Affairs Department of Georgia Power Company, recently spoke at the Rotary Club of Griffin about the company s efforts to reduce greenhouse gasses. She shared that the demand for electricity is projected to increase by 30% in the next 15 years. Georgia Power is promoting energy efficiency by encouraging the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs; giving rebates to customers using Energy Star appliances; providing free inhome energy audits for customers; and encouraging the recycling of old refrigerators and freezers. Georgia Power will actually pick up your old refrigerator or freezer AND pay you $35 (if you are a Georgia Power customer). Running to Celebrate July 4 and a New Rotary Year Celebrating July 4th is big in Dunwoody, GA and a Rotary Club of Dunwoody tradition. This year more than 25,000 people attended the parade and Dunwoody Rotary marched to promote Rotary and the second running of RunDunwoody (a 5K run benefiting the local community) on October 23, The Dunwoody Rotary float won first place for Most Patriotic Float and second place for Best Business/Government Float. The float was designed by Kenny Adcox, son of member Patty Adcox. Dunwoody Rotary also sells hot dogs and drinks and cookies at the end of the parade route and any proceeds over the cost of the raw materials benefit the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. The operation also collects funds for the USO. DISTRICT TREE PROJECT Planting Trees for a Vibrant Future District Governor Margie has requested each member in District 6900 plant just one tree; however, we could opt to follow RI President Kalyan Banerjee s recommendation and 25 trees per member. What a legacy for us to leave. This is a most vital project for the State of Georgia, but also for our children, grand children and many future generations. Our forests, in recent years, have suffered immeasurable damage and loss from disease, insects and above all, devastating fires. Our efforts, as Rotarians, to replace some of these wonderful things of nature, will help future generations by providing wood for building, habitats for wildlife, cleaner air, drinking water and the control of soil erosion. District Chair Cam Sutherland has planted trees and believes one seedling will take a slow person approximately five minutes to plant. By his calculation, that means two hours and five minutes to plant 25 trees. Cam reminds us that there Boy Scouts available to help with planting. Go to GaTrees.org for a listing of species, prices, planting instructions and a current order form. And watch here for updates on the Rotary Forest! 6
