2 Lions Orientation Presentation by Lion Sheila Morrow Page 2 of 6 Happy Socks? Fancy Socks? Habitat for Humanity Socks!!! Lion Sheila Morrow with the Atlanta Metro Lions Club was the featured speaker at the January 10th meeting of our East Cobb Lions Club. Lion Sheila presented an excellent Lions Members Orientation program. The importance of new member orientation cannot be emphasized enough. The information presented by Lion Sheila described the goals, programs, history and traditions of Lions with special emphasis on our East Cobb Lions Club and the many ways that we have served and continue to serve our community and beyond. The Lions orientation provides a foundation for new members and helps to re-energize long time club members to focus on what it means to be a Lion. It helps new members understand how the club functions, what their role will be and gives them the big picture of their district and the association. When new members are properly informed, they are more likely to feel comfortable with the club, become actively involved in club activities and remain in Lions for years. Lion Henry Bohn displays special Habitat for Humanity socks presented to him by Ashley O Neill, Mt. Bethel Habitat Advocate, given to him for his outstanding work with the Mt. Bethel Habitat for Humanity teams that have built 36 houses over the years. For many of those years the East Cobb Lions Club has supported this very worthy cause. It is the goal of Habitat to develop communities by building and renovating homes and providing those homes to qualifying families. Habitat sells the homes they build at no interest and no profit, making them affordable for many low-income families. The partnership between Habitat and homeowner families is one of mutual respect and a core belief that everyone should have the opportunity to live in a safe, decent and affordable home. Habitat homeowners contribute 100 hours of sweat equity building their own home and 100 hours building homes for others. They are also required to attend Living Smart Homeownership Classes. Sponsorship of a Habitat Home includes both the funding of the home as well as the volunteer labor to build the home.

Application forms have been delivered and completed applications are due by March 24th. Scholarships will be awarded in May. The East Cobb Lions Scholarship Committee will evaluate applicants based on a set of criteria that include academic excellence, leadership, and their on-going commitment to help others by performing outstanding community service. Community service achievement is a major part of the evaluation criteria. The 26th Annual East Cobb Lions Charity Golf Tournament will be held at Indian Hills Country Club on Monday, April 24, The golf tournament is our primary fund raiser for the year and allows our club to provide services for needy members of our community. It s vital that all club members work to obtain door prizes, goody bag gifts, sponsors and golfers so that our tournament continues to be the outstanding charity tournament that has been so successful through the years. Tournament Application Brochures will be available at all our meetings. The East Cobb Lions Club Memorial Scholarship fund was created to honor the dedication and years of service to the community by East Cobb Lions Club members who have passed on to their eternal reward.
5 Recycling Eyeglasses Page 5 of 6 Eyeglasses Collection Box Locations East Cobb Senior Center 3332 Sandy Plains Road Marietta The East Cobb Lions are an integral part of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse recycled eyeglass program. We have been involved from collection and cleaning to distribution of the glasses. We have set up collection boxes in offices, schools, churches, and at local eye wear distributor's shops. The East Cobb Lions Club brings in thousands of eyeglasses each year to the Georgia Lighthouse where the usable glasses are cleaned, sorted by type (bifocals, single vision, reading, etc.), and read using a lensometer. They are distributed overseas by groups on mission trips that include optometrists or ophthalmologists that examine needy recipients and match their needs to the proper prescription from the inventory of used eyeglasses. Please note: The Lighthouse doesn t accept contact lenses or glasses cases. Please pass the word on.
