1 BUILDING THE KINGDOM AWARD Mount de Sales Academy Honors Assembly May 26, 2017 The Building the Kingdom Award is a $1,000 award and is given to a student who exemplifies these traits of love of God and service to others. This year s award goes to: RAEGHAN SMITH ALMA KINLEIN McCORMACK and MARION KAYE McCORMACK The recipient of this scholarship meets the following criteria: She is a rising senior who has demonstrated living strong traditional Catholic values through achievement in two areas: Religious Activities Participation and Religion Studies. She has participated for at least a year and is currently participating in religious Catholic activities at school and/or at her home parish and/or religious Catholic activities outside of her home parish. Of those who meet this participation criterion, she has the highest cumulative grade in Religious studies over the first two and one half years. This year s recipient is: MARIA BIEBERICH BERNIE W. WARTHEN MEMORIAL AWARD Mr. Bernie Warthen worked at Mount de Sales for almost 20 years. He was entrusted with the stewardship of our resources so that we might reach our goal of Academic Excellence in the Catholic Tradition. He exemplified the traits of integrity, diligence in all things, patience in trying circumstances, gentleness and the value of generosity and compassion. This award is given to a senior who exemplifies these traits. It includes a $50 Check and memorial plaque. This year s Bernie W. Warthen Memorial Award is given to: ADELAIDE ALLEN Page 1 of 18

2 ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION BOOK SCHOLARSHIP The Alumnae Association Book Scholarship is awarded to a returning student who volunteered at alumnae events during this school year. Each time a student volunteered, her name was added to the pool of eligible girls. The recipient of the Alumna Association Book Scholarship is: ANNA GALVIN ALUMNAE SCHOLARSHIP The Alumnae Scholarship includes a partial Mount de Sales scholarship for one year. The recipients must meet each of the following criteria: Holds a current minimum GPA of 2.5 Is well-rounded and outwardly exemplifies the spirit of and love for Mount de Sales. This year s Alumnae Scholarship winners are: MEGHAN CLAYTON KATHRYN RINGSTAD and LAURA WILSON CAROLINE GRACE HERRMANN AWARD This award was established to honor Caroline s memory and, especially her spirit. This award goes to one or two seniors who exemplify exceptional courage in their own life or selflessness in service to others. This year The Caroline Grace Herrmann award goes to 2 seniors: ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY AWARD GRACE BARTLINSKI and CLAIRE GLASGOW The St. Elizabeth of Hungary award, established by the Mount de Sales Parent s Club, is given to a graduating senior who exemplifies Christian Service. This year s St. Elizabeth of Hungary Award goes to: REAGHAN SMITH and HANNAH ANDREWS Page 2 of 18

3 COOKIE HARRIS PRO LIFE ADVOCACY SCHOLARHSIP The Cookie Harris Pro-Life Advocacy Scholarships, established by the Harris Family in memory of Cookie Harris, are awarded to developing leaders within the pro-life movement. Two scholarships will be awarded; one to a rising junior and one to a rising senior. This year the Cookie Harris Pro Life Advocacy Scholarship is awarded to: MONICA WALLACE AND ANNA GALVIN REVEREND MICHAEL JP ROACH SCHOLARSHIP The Reverend Michael J. P. Roach Scholarship was established by the Aureus Foundation to honor the commitment of Father Roach to Mount de Sales Academy and his selfless service to the Church and community. The Reverend Michael J. P. Roach Scholarship recognizes and rewards a rising senior who has demonstrated a commitment to service. This year s scholarship is awarded to: KELLY SLIKER JUSTINE ELIZABETH DOUGHERTY SCHOLARSHIP The Justine Elizabeth Dougherty Scholarship is granted to a student in the Sacred Heart Program who fully utilizes those resources to improve her overall academic performance. This year s scholarship is awarded to: COLLEEN HOWARD NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY BOOK SCHOLARSHIP The National English Honor Society is pleased to award a $ book scholarship. All freshmen, sophomores and juniors with an A average in English were eligible. The officers randomly draw from these eligible students. This year s Book Scholarship is awarded to: DEIDRE GRANT GREATER ARBUTUS BUSINESS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The Greater Arbutus Business & Professional Association annually presents awards to graduating seniors who have helped to better the community of Arbutus. Our top applicant for this year will be receiving an award of $1,000 towards her college education. This scholarship is presented to: EMMA OLSZEWSKI Page 3 of 18

4 RAVENS ROOST 117 SCHOLARSHIP Ravens Roost 117 is a not-for-profit organization created by Ravens fans. They are a social organization that loves football, but believes in supporting local charities. Located in Catonsville, Ravens Roost 117 provides a Scholarship for Leadership and Financial need for Catonsville Seniors. This year s Ravens Roost 117 Scholarship is presented to both: ABIGAIL QUIRK and CAROLINE BATEMAN HILLCREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AWARD Teachers play a critical role in shaping a student s experience by sharing their commitment of academic excellence. Hillcrest Elementary School would like to honor the passion for learning of one of our own teachers, Mrs. Bridget Quinn by presenting this award to her daughter: MEGAN QUINN DELEGATE SYDNOR SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship competition was open for students who live in District 44B and are attending a college in the state of Maryland. Delegate Charles E. Sydnor III is pleased to present this scholarship to: ABIGAIL QUIRK DELEGATE KREBS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship competition was open for students who live in District 5 and is based on academic excellence, leadership and community service. 9 NATIONAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXAM AWARDS This spring, all of our foreign language students participated in the National Foreign Language Exams for French, Latin, and Spanish. Our students excelled on these National Exams and many of the students received Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards. Today we would like to recognize those students who received the highest award of Gold. The STEM classes competed at the Regional Challenge this year at the Naval Academy. We d like to congratulate and recognize the following students for their award winning SeaPerch design and for advancing to the National Challenge in Georgia. 12 Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, The Eagle of the Cross Award is given to a youth or young adult who best exemplifies apostolic mission, Christian leadership and moral integrity within a church, parish or school. This year s Mount de Sales Eagle of the Cross Award goes to: KATELYN NELLIES MOCK TRIAL ALL-STAR AWARD Of these students who competed in the Mock Trial program, the Third Circuit Mock Trial Competition awards a special All Star Certificate to members of the team in order to recognize their outstanding achievements in the Program. Though our Mount de Sales nominee did not win this year s award, we would like to present her with this certificate. 13 PRESIDENT S AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE The Presidential Award for Academic Excellence is given to SENIORS in recognition of Outstanding Academic Achievement. The criteria is a GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 grade scale, as well as a 1650 on a 2400 SAT scale or 1190 on a 1600 SAT scale. Please hold your applause until we have read all of the names. CLAIRE NILAN ARCHDIOCESE OF BALTIMORE DISTINCTIVE SCHOLARS The Archdiocese of Baltimore Distinctive Scholars award is given by the Division of Catholic Schools to celebrate and affirm the achievements of graduating seniors whose high school careers have been marked by outstanding academic achievement. The teacher of the year is someone who is committed to teaching excellence, dedicated to his or her students, is loyal to the philosophy of Mount de Sales Academy, is respected by students, parents and colleagues and is able to motivate students toward a greater appreciation of learning. This year the award came down to two very worthy faculty members who model these traits in how they live and teach. In fact, it was such a difficult decision for the faculty and administration that the vote came down to a perfect split. As one faculty member wrote on her ballot so appropriately, both are super worthy I can t pick one. Mrs. Patricia Ziff And Mrs. Lindsey Murphy PRINCIPAL S LEADERSHIP & ERIC T. MUNSON MEMORIAL AWARD The Principal s Leadership & Eric T. Munson Memorial Award is given for Academic Excellence and Exemplary Leadership to the Student Council President. This award goes to: CAROLINE GRAYCE BURNS Page 15 of 18

16 PRINCIPAL S CHOICE ART AWARD The Principal s Choice Award goes to an outstanding art piece or pieces. The works are chosen by the principal that will be hung permanently in the school. This year the Principal s Choice Award goes to: MARIA LeMONNIER Picco Fine Arts Scholarship This scholarship is awarded in memory of the Picco family to an art student. The amount is $500 and is a one-time award. This year s Picco Fine Arts Scholarship is awarded to: NATALIE POPPER HELEN KERWAN MAISAL LEADERSHIP AWARD Helen Kerwan Maisal started boarding at the school in the fourth grade. She lovingly served the school and her fellow students as class president for four of those years. This award is presented to the senior class president to honor her similar virtue, character and dedication in serving her fellow students. The 2017 recipient of the Helen Kerwan Maisal Leadership Award goes to: MARY POPP CHARLES EVANS AWARD Mr. Charles Evans was a long-time teacher and staff member at Mount de Sales who was loved by all. This award goes to a student who demonstrates a love of Mount de Sales and the Catholic Church, has shown leadership among peers, and dedication to academic, extra-curricular and spiritual activities. This award is presented to: ABIGAIL QUIRK DAVID B. WILKINS COURAGE AWARD Mr. David B. Wilkins was a teacher at Mount de Sales from He was a great representative of courage as he overcame his own adversities. The recipient of this award is selected by the administration from the entire student body as one who has also shown a great courage. Preference is given to seniors. This year s David B. FRANCIS DE SALES SPIRIT AWARDS 2015 The St. Francis de Sales Spirit Award is given to one student from each class who exemplifies strong school spirit and ability to evoke the spirit and love for Mount de Sales in others. She supports her classmates both in word and in deed. The St. Francis de Sales Spirit awards go to the following students: Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior CHLOE STEER SAMANTHA FACIUS EMMA JENDREK JENNIFER KELLEHER ST. FRANCIS DE SALES FACULTY & STAFF SPIRIT AWARD This award is given to a faculty or staff member who demonstrates a great love for Mount de Sales and the ability to build community. This year s recipient pours herself into all that she does here at her Alma Mater, Mount de Sales. You may not see her often, but we all have been impacted and have reaped the rewards of her efforts. Her work has led us to having warm classrooms, a beautiful field on which our students and teams can play and a lovely warm convent for our Sisters. Soon enough we will be enjoying the new Student and Fine Arts Center on which she is working so diligently as we speak. For all that she does for all of us, this year s St. Francis de Sales Faculty and Staff spirit award goes to: ELIZABETH SAVERINO YEARBOOK DEDICATION I would like to invite the Yearbook Editors, Val McGrath and Sophie Talbert to come forward and present the yearbook dedication for 2017: When this person began working at Mount de Sales in 1995, nobody knew how much of an impact she would have on our school. Mrs. Nyman said, she is one of the most kind, giving and genuine people I know. She was always willing to help the students write citations or find resources for our papers, sometimes without Page 17 of 18

18 even asking. She would welcome students into the vibrant library with a smile and a cookie. It is with great pleasure that we dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Alice Carpenter SALUTATORIAN AND VALEDICTORIAN The Salutatorian is the student who received the 2 nd highest academic honor in her class. I present to you the Salutatorian of the 2017 graduating class: RACHEL HUBER The Valedictorian maintains the highest academic average of the graduating class and is ranked 1 st in her class. Hers is the top academic honor. I present to you the Valedictorian of the 2017 graduating class: SARAH WITT MOUNT DE SALES GIRL Each year a senior is chosen by her class and the faculty as Mount de Sales Girl. This girl must witness Christian virtues; she must display loyalty to the values upheld at Mount de Sales.
