HEOP Introduction Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) provides academic support and financial assistance to young people who might not meet all the traditional college admissions criteria but show promise of succeeding in college. Class of 2018 Journey HEOP Leadership Council Academic Achievements Since 1969, the program has been integral to Mount Saint Mary College s commitment to access in higher education and its philosophy toward educating the whole student in preparation for a life of leadership and service. Class of 2018 We want to congratulate the Class of 2018! HEOP Leaders HEOP in the Community Supportive Staff Spotlight HEOP is sponsored by the New York State Education Department and the college. Having that let me become more confident in my various roles within the MSMC community -Shantelle Lord Through my last 4 years at MSMC HEOP has been my backbone. If it wasn t for the program and the resources HEOP offers, I would not be graduating college and have excelled the way I have throughout my years in college. HEOP is my family. I will forever be grateful to have been part of the HEOP program at MSMC HEOP has taught me the importance of having a strong and reliable support system to be there for me when I come across difficult obstacles. The HEOP program has given me an opportunity of a lifetime and made one of my dream s into a reality; being able to attend and graduate from college. I will leave MSMC forever grateful for being a part of the HEOP family and giving me the tools and experience I need to achieve the rest of my goals HEOP has helped me become the person I am today through the opportunity it has given me being in this program, without that opportunity I wouldn t be the person I am today -Maria Rivera -Patricia Polanco -Katherin Lopez

4 HEOP NEWSLETTER SPRING 2018 Issue 1 4 This was a collaborative event between Leadsership Council and Black Student Union Emphasizing Black Excellence and Overcoming obstacles in our communities to be successful To Celebrate Black History Month, we invited HEOP Alumni to participate on a panel. Aleschia Johnson: a Mount Saint Mary College 2011 HEOP alumni, she currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Executive MPA program at Columbia University s School of International and Public Affairs. Jessica Miles; Cornerstone Family Healthcare, which is a non-for profit agency helping families meet their children s needs. Ms. Miles graduated from Mount Saint Mary College in 2011 with a degree in Psychology. Kareem Donaldson; A 2008 Mount Saint Mary College HEOP graduate. Most recently, Kareem decided to return to Newburgh as a Guidance Counselor at South Middle School. Torrance Harvey; Newburgh Councilman Torrance Harvey is from Newburgh, NY. Councilman Harvey earned a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education (History) from Mount Saint Mary College in 2003.

7 HEOP NEWSLETTER SPRING 2018 Issue 1 7 Jason Franky Jason Franky was born and raised in the Bronx, NY and attended Mount Saint Mary College both as an undergraduate and graduate student. While attending the Mount as an undergraduate student Jason served as a Resident Assistant, Treasurer of the sophomore class in his second semester, V.P. of Student Activities in his junior year, and V.P. of the Student Government Association in his senior year. Along with these various positions, Jason was also involved in various clubs and organizations on campus. His involvement on campus had earned him the honor of being the recipient of the award for Outstanding Leadership within the College Community. In 2008, Jason graduated with his B.A. in History with a concentration in Political Science with a minor in Psychology. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the M.B.A. program and culminated his degree in May of In March 2018, Jason completed his second graduate degree with a Master s of Science in Higher Education Administration from Southern New Hampshire University. Supportive Staff Spotlight Jason has held various professional positions here on the Mount s campus. Started working part time in 2005-part time in the Campus Bookstore/ Cyber Cafe. Jason has also held the positions in the Campus Bookstore of Coordinator of Shipping/ Receiving, as well as Lead Supervisor. In June 2010, he was given the opportunity of joining the Department of Financial Aid. Since June 2010, Jason has held the roles of counselor, Assistant Direct, Associate Director, and currently holds the position of Director. Jason is an avid advocate and believer of the Mount and what it has to offer. He was a first generation student, came from a family with modest means and was the first in his family to graduate from college. Jason at times had struggled with his academics but with two parents who were committed to his success, he was able to persist and achieve his academic goals. Along with a great family, he is especially grateful for the support system he was able to build while attending the Mount. Jason is extremely grateful for faculty and administrators such as Kelly Yough, Keino Isaac, Harry Steinway, Barbara Winchell, Jeff Kahana, Maureen Markel, Rae Fallon, Paul Schwartz, Larry Force, Sr. Peggy Murphy, as well as so many more for his growth both personally and professionally. Jason is also grateful that he has met his fiancé Sarah here at the Mount and they will be getting married on campus at the Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary in March Jason believes that education and community is what makes one a success. Students can succeed if given a great support system, hard work, and perseverance that one s pursuit for a better life is possible. This is especially true especially for those students who are first generation and come from modest means. Jason assists with the HEOP summer bridge program and holds the HEOP program close to his heart. Jason prides himself in being an advocate for HEOP and has always been an available resource. Although not a HEOP alumni, he relates with students in the program and will always be available to assist the students in pursuit of their dreams. Jason believes that the students enrolled in HEOP is destined for great achievements and successes in life. HEOP students bring a great perspective and desire that not all students may have and for this, he is grateful. The relationships built with the HEOP students has contributed to him being a positive and successful higher education professional.
