1 Mount de Sales Academy Honors Assembly May 27, 2016 ROTC SCHOLARSHIPS Applying for an Army ROTC National Scholarship is a lengthy and competitive process. Over 12,000 students apply each year; of those, approximately 3,500 are accepted. Through their exemplary performances as scholars, athletes, and leaders, we are proud to announce two seniors who have been awarded full four-year ROTC Scholarships. ELIZABETH KOLB Attending The University of Notre Dame on a full ROTC scholarship and KATHRYN CALDERONE Attending Virginia Tech on a full ROTC scholarship BUILDING THE KINGDOM AWARD Mr. & Mrs. Howard present this award in memory of their daughter, Tara Howard, Class of 2005, to a student who exemplifies Christian service. BRIDGET EDMONDSON ALMA KINLEIN McCORMACK and MARION KAYE McCORMACK SCHOLARSHIP The recipient of this scholarship meets the following criteria: She is a rising senior who has demonstrated living strong traditional Catholic values through achievement in two areas: Religious Activities Participation and Religion Studies. She has participated for at least a year and is currently participating in religious Catholic activities at school and/or at her home parish and/or religious Catholic activities outside of her home parish. Of those who meet this participation criterion, she has the highest cumulative grade in Religious studies over the first two and one half years. KELLY SZALANKIEWICZ Page 1 of 18
2 BERNIE W. WARTHEN MEMORIAL AWARD Mr. Bernie Warthen worked at Mount de Sales for almost 20 years. He was entrusted with the stewardship of our resources so that we might reach our goal of Academic Excellence in the Catholic Tradition. He exemplified the traits of integrity, diligence in all things, patience in trying circumstances, gentleness and the value of generosity and compassion. This award is given to a senior who exemplifies these traits. It includes a $50 Check and memorial plaque. This year s Bernie W. Warthen Memorial Award is given to: MARY BIRRANE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION BOOK SCHOLARSHIP The Alumnae Association Book Scholarship is awarded to a returning student who volunteered at alumnae events during this school year. Each time a student volunteered, her name was added to the pool of eligible girls. The recipient of the Alumnae Association Book Scholarship is: ANNA GRACE RYAN ALUMNAE SCHOLARSHIP The Alumnae Scholarship includes a partial Mount de Sales scholarship for one year. The recipients must meet each of the following criteria: Holds a current minimum GPA of 2.5 Is well-rounded and outwardly exemplifies the spirit of and love for Mount de Sales. This year s Alumnae Scholarship winners are: CATHERINE SCHARBACH MARY LANGLEY JESSICA SKOGLIN CAROLINE GRACE HERRMANN AWARD This award was established to honor Caroline s memory and, especially her spirit. This award goes to one or two seniors who exemplify exceptional courage in their own life or selflessness in service to others. This year The Caroline Grace Herrmann award goes to two seniors: BRIDGET BODLEY AND AMELIA HUTCHINS Page 2 of 18
3 ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY AWARD The St. Elizabeth of Hungary award, established by the Mount de Sales Parent s Club, is given to a graduating senior who exemplifies Christian Service. This year s St. Elizabeth of Hungary Award goes to: THERESE LIPSCOMBE AND THERESA SARVER COOKIE HARRIS PRO LIFE ADVOCACY SCHOLARHSIP The Cookie Harris Pro-Life Advocacy Scholarships, established by the Harris Family in memory of Cookie Harris, are awarded to developing leaders within the pro-life movement. Two scholarships will be awarded; one to a rising junior and one to a rising senior. This year the Cookie Harris Pro Life Advocacy Scholarship is awarded to MONICA WALLACE CLASS OF 2018 KATELYN NELLIES -CLASS OF 2017 REVEREND MICHAEL JP ROACH SCHOLARSHIP The Reverend Michael J. P. Roach Scholarship was established by the Aureus Foundation to honor the commitment of Father Roach to Mount de Sales Academy and his selfless service to the Church and community. The Reverend Michael J. P. Roach Scholarship recognizes and rewards a rising senior who has demonstrated a commitment to service. This year s scholarship is awarded to: RACHEL HUBER JUSTINE ELIZABETH DOUGHERTY SCHOLARSHIP The Justine Elizabeth Dougherty Scholarship is granted to a student in the Sacred Heart Program who fully utilizes those resources to improve her overall academic performance. 4 NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY BOOK SCHOLARSHIP The National English Honor Society is pleased to award a $ book scholarship. All freshmen, sophomores and juniors with an A average in English were eligible. The officers randomly draw from these eligible students. This year s Book Scholarship is awarded to: JILLIAN RICE ARBUTUS BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The Arbutus Business and Professional Association annually presents awards to graduating seniors who have helped to better the community of Arbutus. Our top applicant for this year will be receiving an award of $1,000 towards her college education. This scholarship is presented to: ROSEMARIE McAULIFFE ACADEMIC AWARDS Academic Awards are given to the students with the highest academic score in each subject area. In the case of an even tie, each student will be recognized. This year s Mount de Sales Eagle of the Cross Award goes to: JESSICA BRINKER MOCK TRIAL ALL-STAR AWARD Of these students who competed in the Mock Trial program, the Third Circuit Mock Trial Competition awards a special All Star Certificate to members of the team in order to recognize their outstanding achievements in the Program. The teacher of the year is someone who is committed to teaching excellence, dedicated to her students, is loyal to the philosophy of Mount de Sales Academy, is respected by students, parents and colleagues and is able to motivate students toward a greater appreciation of learning. SR. JANET MARY PRINCIPAL S LEADERSHIP & ERIC T. MUNSON MEMORIAL AWARD The Principal s Leadership & Eric T. Munson Memorial Award is given for Academic Excellence and Exemplary Leadership to the Student Council President. JESSICA BRINKER PRINCIPAL S CHOICE ART AWARD The Principal s Choice Award goes to an outstanding art piece or pieces. The works are chosen by the principal that will be hung permanently in the school. HANNAH MEGAN Picco Fine Arts Scholarship This scholarship is awarded in memory of the Picco family to an art student. The amount is $500 and is a one-time award. 16 HELEN KERWAN MAISAL LEADERSHIP AWARD Helen Kerwan Maisal started boarding at the school in the fourth grade. She lovingly served the school and her fellow students as class president for four of those years. This award is presented to the senior class president to honor her similar virtue, character and dedication in serving her fellow students. ELIZABETH DODA CHARLES EVANS Mr. Charles Evans was a long-time teacher and staff member at Mount de Sales who was loved by all. This award goes to a student who demonstrates a love of Mount de Sales and the Catholic Church, has shown leadership among peers, and dedication to academic, extra-curricular and spiritual activities. This award is presented to: VERONICA BALICK DAVID B. WILKINS COURAGE AWARD Mr. David B. Wilkins was a teacher at Mount de Sales from He was a great representative of courage as he overcame his own adversities. The recipient of this award is selected by the administration from the entire student body as one who has also shown a great courage. Preference is given to seniors. This year s David B. Wilkins Courage award is given to: LONDON SMITH ST. FRANCIS DE SALES SPIRIT AWARDS 2015 The St. Francis de Sales Spirit Award is given to one student from each class who exemplifies strong school spirit and ability to evoke the spirit and love for Mount de Sales in others. She supports her classmates both in word and in deed. 17 Senior MEREDITH JONES ST. FRANCIS DE SALES FACULTY & STAFF SPIRIT AWARD This award is given to a faculty or staff member who demonstrates a great love for Mount de Sales and the ability to build community. This year we would like to recognize two people. Our first recipient pours herself into all that she does here at Mount de Sales. You may not see her every day, but she is downstairs making sure that everything she does somehow will benefit the most important thing - YOU, the students. After years of love and dedication as a parent and a staff member, we would like to offer the first St. Francis de Sales Faculty and Staff spirit award to: MRS. LARRAINE CLARK The second recipient also pours herself into all that she does here at Mount de Sales. She undoubtedly epitomizes the description noted above. She has a great love for Mount de Sales and its students. She has spent over 15 years building up the mission and spirit of the school by leading both strongly in the forefront and also gently from the background. She does it all, for love of you and after giving out so many of these for so many years, I am sure everyone will agree this recognition is long overdue. This second St. Francis de Sales Faculty and Staff Spirit award goes to.. MRS. JUDI LANCIOTTI YEARBOOK DEDICATION MRS. JUDI LANCIOTTI SALUTATORIAN AND VALEDICTORIAN The Salutatorian is the student who received the 2nd highest academic honor in her class. VERONICA BALICK Page 17 of 18
18 The Valedictorian maintains the highest academic average of the graduating class and is ranked 1st in her class. Hers is the top academic honor. ELIZABETH KOLB MOUNT DE SALES GIRL Each year a senior is chosen by her class and the faculty as Mount de Sales Girl. This girl must witness Christian virtues; she must display loyalty to the values upheld at Mount de Sales. The Mount de Sales Girl is one who practices charity, friendliness, courtesy and service to faculty and students. She is a leader and she always manifests school spirit.
