Seats are limited, call the Center to reserve your spot today. Free Tax Services Another tax season is fast approaching. The Romulus Senior Center will provide free tax services through AARP and the help of our City Treasurer. If you are 60 or older, handicapped or low income individuals, please have your paper work ready in order to sign up for your tax appointment. No walk-ins please. Call the Senior Center now to schedule your appointment. NEW CPR/AED Class Monday, Feb. 22nd 11:30 a.m. Learn how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies with an instructor from our own Romulus Fire Department. Class will last approximately 2 hours. Attention Meals on Wheels Recipients! In order to receive your daily meal, you MUST have your driveway cleared of snow and salted. This is for the safety of our workers. If you need assistance with this, please call and see if you are eligible for chore services. Participants in the program are asked to provide: Copy of last year s income tax return W-2 forms if you earned a salary Unemployment compensation statements SSA-1099 form if you were paid Social Security benefits All 1099 forms showing interest of dividends 1099R form from the payer of your pension or annuity All forms indicating Federal income tax paid Dependent care provider information (name, employer ID, SSN) All receipts or canceled checks if itemizing deductions Social Security cards or official documentation for yourself and all dependents Photo ID Valentine Luncheon Wednesday, February 17th 11:00 a.m. Brighten up your winter day with a fun-loving Valentine s luncheon! Senior Book Club Tuesday Feb. 16th 10:30 a.m. The Romulus Public Library will be holding a morning book club at the Center. This month they discuss: Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein Quilting Club Thursdays 6:00 p.m. Anyone ages 16 and up are welcome. For those interested in learning to quilt, wanting to finish a project or start something new! Grocery Shopping Mondays 9:00 a.m. Visits to Meijer or Walmart in Belleville. Don t forget to call ahead of time to attend. We need counts in order to complete our route schedules. Thank you. 4 Message from the Director, Rose Swidan Hello to all our seniors! We are excited about all the new programs that we have here at the Senior Center this year so far. If you have not stopped by yet, browse through the rest of this Communicator and try something that peaks your interest. Stop by for Paczki Day on February 9th, but please call the Senior Center and RSVP so we can have a paczki for everyone. Come join us for our Valentine s Party Luncheon on February 17th. We will have music, dancing and lot of sweets to offer. There will be raffles and giveaways as well. We will be having our fine Fire Department doing a special class for our seniors about CPR and the use of AEDs on February 22nd. Please sign up if you are interested. Also, a reminder to sign up ASAP for help with your taxes as availability is limited this year. Stay tuned for our new Pinterest and Facebook education classes about how to make new friends, stay connected and get new ideas and recipes. We are going to be rolling out all kinds of new and exciting programs here at the Senior Center this year. Keep giving us your suggestions! 5 Message from Mayor Burcroff First I want to thank those that came to my State of the City address last month. If you weren t able to attend, please take a look at our Cable Channels or visit YouTube to watch the entire presentation from home or at the Senior Center. I ll also be giving you an overview of my State of the City Address at the Valentine s Day luncheon on the 17th. I d love to hear your feedback on our plans for this coming year my door is always open for you. February is Black History Month and this is a time to remember and honor the many, important contributions people of color have made not only in our country, but in Romulus and around the world. I hope you ll join us at the free, annual Soul Food Dinner which kicks off Black History Month here in our City on Tuesday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m. at Romulus High School. There will also be other events to celebrate this month including a local historic Bus Tour and others at the High School and Library. Please check our website for all the details. 7 Recipe Exchange: Panera Cheese and Broccoli Soup Ingredients 1 T. melted butter 1/2 medium onion, chopped 1/4 c. melted butter 1/4 c. flour 2 c. half-and-half cream 2 c. chicken stock 1/2 lb. fresh broccoli (about 3 cups), chopped into bite size pieces 1 c. carrot, julienned (can buy matchstick carrots in produce section) 1/4 t. nutmeg 8 oz. grated sharp cheddar cheese (2 cups) salt & pepper Directions 1. Sauté onion in 1 T of butter. Set aside. 2. Cook the 1/4 cup melted butter and flour using a whisk over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Stir constantly and add the half & half. 3. Add the chicken stock and simmer for about 10 minutes. 4. Add the broccoli, carrots and reserved onions. Cook over low heat minutes. 5. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can leave the soup chunky, or blend about 1 cup of the soup and stir it in for a smoother soup (recommended). Return to low heat and add the cheese. If your heat is too high, the soup can get grainy. Stir in nutmeg. 6. Serve with crusty bread. Need Food? Low income residents are eligible for free commodities each month. A variety of food is provided by the Emergency Food Assistance Program. Wayne County asks for a donation of $2.25 Volunteers Needed The Senior Center is looking for volunteers to pack food each morning from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for the Meals on Wheels Program.
