Here s your chance to play in the biggest golf event this winter. Every golfer has played in a summer tournament, but how many have played in January? You ll play nine snowy, fun holes of golf followed by a warm bowl of chili, hot dogs, and hot chocolate. Golfers will be challenged to drive shots across frozen tundra and putt balls laden with ice. You ll hit orange golf balls to snow covered greens on the 9 hole course of yard holes. Gift certificates for 18 holes will be awarded to the three winning teams. The cost to enter the Chili Open is $18 which includes golf fees, orange golf balls, food, and hot chocolate. The Chili Open is sponsored by the City of Mentor with proceeds benefiting the United Way of Lake County. Must register to play by January 20. LITTLE PRINCESS VALENTINE S DANCE Friday, February 2, 7-8:30 p.m., Mentor Senior Center Calling all Princesses ages 4 and older! You are invited to a special, royal dance! At our Little Princess Valentine s Dance, you and your favorite man will have a regal evening of dance, music, cookies & punch, an aristocratic craft and memorable fun. DJ music and entertainment will be provided. Dads, treat your daughter or granddaughter to a very majestic Valentine s Day memory she will never forget. This event is sponsored by the City of Mentor s Community Arts Commission. Space is limited, register early! 3 [UNVEILED] This new art exhibit features local Northeast Ohio artists and displays their talents for all to enjoy. A small reception, including a meet and greet by the artist, kicks off each show. The three week exhibit is free and open to the public M-F 8-5 p.m. For more information or to exhibit, please call the Wildwood Cultural Center at (440) [unveiled] is sponsored by the Mentor Community Arts Commission. Friday, February 2, 7 8:30 p.m., Mentor Municipal Center Featured Artist: Dorothy McNamara Maloney Dorothy McNamara Maloney was a well-known Lake County artist painting many of Mentor s historic places. Dorothy was a charter member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society and an associate member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, member of the Creative Artists of Lake County, and Western Reserve Watercolor Society. She also taught adult continuing in education courses in watercolors at Lakeland Community College and Browning Center in Willoughby. Dorothy was a Mentor resident who was instrumental in helping to establish the Lake County Art Show. She believed in giving artists the opportunity to display their work and be rewarded for their efforts. Friday, April 6, 7 8:30 p.m., Mentor Municipal Center Featured Artist: Dustin Kaiser Dustin Started drawing at a young age but when high school came along he was forced to make a decision between art and music. Choosing music, he gave up his passion for art for about 13 years. Recently he has again picked up his pencil and feels like he never took a break. His love for the arts has driven him to pick up multiple mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, and spray paint, as well as charcoal, and color pencil to name a few. Now he also keeps busy with photography and videography and performs magic acts at his music gigs as well where he sings and plays guitar. After picking art back up he hopes to never put the pencil down again. WINTERWEAVE Friday, February 23 Sunday, February 25, Times vary, Wildwood Cultural Center WinterWeave, presented by the Wildwood Basketry Guild, will bring together amateur and professional weavers from all over the country for a spectacular winter weekend of weaving, designing and learning. Basket weaving demonstration will be open to the public on Saturday, February 24 from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free for observers. Information on upcoming basketry classes at Wildwood Cultural Center will also be available. For more information, log on to or call the Wildwood Cultural Center at (440) FAMILY FEUD NIGHT Saturday, February 24, 6:30 pm, Mentor Beach Park 100 people were surveyed the question: Name the hottest new adult event in Mentor. The number one answer is. Family Feud Night! Gather six of your closest family and friends and register for this fun-filled night of entertainment. Each team will get to play three games consisting of 2 rounds. We will keep track of points and the top two teams will go head to head in the championship round! Snacks and wash will be provided and you are welcome to bring your beverage of choice. Each team must have at least one Mentor resident on it. Last year this event sold out quickly so don t get shut out, get your team together and register early. Adults 21 + only. Team captain should register by calling (440) Fee is $120 per team of 6 due at the time of registration. POLKA THE DAY AWAY WITH THE CHARDON POLKA BAND Thursday, March 22, 6:30 8:30 p.m., Mentor Senior Center Whether you love traditional polka music or want to hear polka with a twist, you ll love the Chardon Polka Band. The band is captivating audiences across Northeast Ohio with its unique style and unique blend of musicians. Light refreshments will be provided. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at Mentor Senior Center. Hurry it s sure to be a sellout! ADULT FLASHLIGHT DASH EGG HUNT Saturday, March 24, 7:30 p.m., Black Brook Golf Course Sure to be the best hour of fun in 2018, the Adult Flashlight Dash is a fast-paced, competitive all-out -sprint of an egg hunt just for adults 21 and over! We ll gather in the club house then head to the practice center (can you hear the Chariots of Fire music playing in the background?) then on the word GO, you ll take off, flashlights in hand, to find as many of the 4,000 eggs hidden on the practice range as possible. More than 100 of those eggs will have really great prizes! This event fills up quickly, so register early! Snacks are included and adult beverages are available for purchase. Pre-registration is required. No on-site registration will be accepted. Guest of Honor cleverly transports you to the scene of a new crime to solve three cold case murders at Euclid Beach park, Squires Castle and the Cleveland Museum of Art. This all new Frank Krupa mystery for adults 21 and over includes 50 s music, dancing and hors d oeuvres. Adult beverages welcome. We encourage you to wear 1950 s attire to this special event. Admission for the performance is $5. Tickets can be purchased etc. The Wildwood Singers are sponsored by the City of Mentor s Community Arts Commission. 4 YOUTH REC Active Kids ALPINE VALLEY CLUB PROGRAM Grades 3-5 The Alpine Valley Club program is a fantastic ski/snowboard experience for kids in grades 3-5. In this program, children receive a lift pass, 5 one-hour group lessons and bus transportation to and from Alpine Valley for 6 weeks, weather permitting. Students may continue to ski on Thursdays with their own transportation at the conclusion of the program and can visit Boston Mills or Brandywine on Thursdays with their pass after the program ends at no additional cost! This program is chaperoned by Recreation Department staff. We work closely with Alpine Valley to provide a smooth transition for new skiers and a quick glide to the hill for more experienced skiers. Students who do not intend to ride the bus each week are encouraged to contact Alpine directly for alternate pass information. Contact the Recreation Department with questions. Students will learn basic loco motor movements and basic dance positions. Wear a leotard or loose clothing, dance slippers or bare feet. Although parents and siblings need not stay to observe, each parent is encouraged to view one or two classes as a parent helper. No class April 2. 5 BABYNASTICS Age months Just for babies who are a little more mobile and have more cruising time under their belt, Babynastics is a child-initiated, parent and child exploration program designed to help develop your baby s body awareness, vocabulary and attention span while having FUN using equipment such as our ball pit, ladders and wedges. 6 NEW! LITTLE DRAGONS KARATE Ages 3-4 Little Dragons is a month-long course for toddlers. In this class, we work on 8 basic skills including discipline, focus, teamwork, memory, control, balance, coordination and fitness. We work on hand-eye coordination, learn how to be a team player and how to wait our turn. We also work on sitting and standing still, and sharing. We have lots of fun in class while still having discipline. To earn a new belt, children earn a stripe for each of the 8 basic skills, usually a two-month process. Participants can come to class any day it is offered to learn, practice and work toward their next belt. Participants should wear loose fitting clothes and/or a karate uniform. More information will be provided on where to purchase a uniform at the first class. 7 MENTOR SAFETY TOWN Ages 4-6 Junior Women s Club of Mentor and the City of Mentor sponsor Mentor Safety Town, a safety awareness program for children ages 4-6. Registration for this very popular program takes place February 15 April 15. Registration forms are available at and also at Mentor Public Library, Mentor Recreation Department and Mentor Police Department. 8 Teens and Young Adults NEW! SILK FLORAL DESIGN FOR TEENS Age 13+ Learn the basics of floral design: color, design, wiring and taping, choosing flowers and much more. You will be able to customize your projects.. Cyndi Hoge has a degree in Graphic Design from the Hixson School of Floral Design. She also has been the senior Floral Designer at Michaels for 15 years. We offer exciting camp experiences across many areas of interest designed to promote physical activity, teach new skills, and challenge kids to reach and grow and to make new friends. Communication with Campers and Parents About four days before each of our camps is scheduled to begin, parents and campers can expect to receive information by with a reminder of where camp is held, what to bring, as well as any updated information you might need to make your camp experience the best. You will also receive an Information and Emergency Form that will need to be completed and turned in to the camp director the first day of camp. It is important that parents provide a valid address upon registration so that we can deliver this important information to you. What To Bring/Wear/Remember for Camp: For all camps: Wear loose, comfortable clothing and tennis shoes (no sandals) each day. Also, to stay properly hydrated, each participant will need to bring a water bottle with his/her name on it to camp every day. For outdoor camps, please apply sunscreen 30 minutes before arriving at camp. Volunteering Mentor Recreation offers a Lend A Hand For Summer volunteer program for young adults over the age of 14 and having completed 9th grade. Opportunities are available to volunteer at Civic Center Day Camp, Garfield Play Camp, Kid Quest, and with our Learn to Swim lessons and special events. If you know the proper procedure, you can make 100% whole grain bread that has great texture, and that does not resemble a doorstop. Some grains work better than others, and we ll learn about that in class, too. If you are trying to get away from white flour- this class will teach you about whole grain alternatives. The flour and corn tortillas in the dairy counter at your grocery store can be used for everything from appetizers to breakfast, sandwiches to desserts. You ll learn how to make Mexican and non-mexican dishes including a baked egg roll! Tortillas are easy to use and can make cooking easier. 16 PRIVATE PIANO LESSONS Adult 16+ Teens and adult beginners will learn fundamentals regarding hand position, fingering, note time values, clefs, playing simple songs, reading notes on staffs, etc. Students who have studied piano previously receive coaching to enhance their musical/technical skills. The Mentor Ice Arena offers an all-day skate camp from 8 a.m. 5 p.m. Program includes skating, broomball, movies, crafts, games and more skating. The snack bar is open for participants to purchase food or just brown bag it for lunch. No season passes or punch card will be accepted for the All- Day Skate Camp. Participants must have a 2017/2018 Medical Release form on file to participate. Register early and receive a $5 discount. 19 Ice skating is not only one of America s best winter sports, it s also one of the most accessible thanks to the Mentor Ice Arena! Ice skating helps build muscle, is low-impact and easy on joints, and can boost balance, flexibility, quickness and agility. All of these benefits are perfect for young children building small and large motor skills and even better for adults interested in burning calories and staying fit! Ice Skating Lessons At Mentor Ice Arena, ice skating lessons are progressive in nature, meaning you start with the basics and build on fundamental skills. For those interested in playing hockey or learning to figure skate, classes are available to teach those skills too! Where to Begin? We ve designed programs that are right for all ages and all interests. Children age 3-5 start with the Tot program. Children 6 and up start with the Basic program and adults and teens ages 12 & up start with the Adult Basic program. What Do I Need to Get Started? All participants in our Learn-to-Skate program should wear loose, comfortable clothing including a jacket or heavy sweatshirt, jeans, snow pants or layered athletic pants, and warm socks. Those under age 10 must wear a helmet, and gloves are encouraged as well as the average temperature in the rink is 55 degrees. Because we want you to practice what you re learning, all skaters registered in the Learn-to-Skate program receive a punch card for free open skate sessions good during the 7 weeks of lessons. 24 MENTOR SENIOR CENTER About Mentor Senior Center Mentor Senior Center is a thriving meeting place for Senior Citizens with over 5000 members. Mentor Senior Center office, administered by the City of Mentor, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Mentor Senior Center also hosts a number of evening and weekend programs. The Center offers a wide variety of classes, health and social services, groups, trips and other special events. Transportation is available to and from Mentor Senior Center events in cooperation with LakeTran and the City of Mentor. The senior fare is $2.50 one way, and the City of Mentor pays $2 of the $2.50 fare for Mentor residents. (Please see Recreation Coordinator to set this up with Laketran). Meals are served between 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. weekdays Monday through Friday. Membership is available to anyone 55 years old or older. Membership is required to participate in Senior Center activities. Membership fees are $7 for Mentor residents and $10 for nonresidents. Members will receive the Mentor Senior Center bi-monthly newsletter. In addition to the activities listed on these pages, there are many others, including volunteer opportunities and small group activities. Registration Process Senior Center membership is required to participate in Senior Center activities including classes, activities and programs. This registration process refers to winter/spring classes described on this page and the next two pages. Registration for winter and spring classes for Mentor residents begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, December 4. Nonresident registration begins on Tuesday, December 5 at 8 a.m. You may register for one other person only. If you don t come to in-person registration, please register at least one week before the beginning date of each class. The City of Mentor accepts Visa and Mastercard. When registering online, Discover and American Express may also be used. Non-Senior Registration Non-senior adults, defined as adults who are younger than 55, can register for a class at Mentor Senior Center at a slightly higher price as long as non-senior registration does not prevent senior citizens from taking classes. An annual participation fee paid once a year is required for non-seniors to participate in Senior Center programs. Annual non-senior fees are $10 for a resident and $13 for a non-resident. Contact Mentor Senior Center for a list of non-senior class fees. Trips Mentor Senior Center offers nearly 40 trips annually; from local afternoon excursions to weeklong trips to far off destinations. Activity Levels Mild May require some leisurely walking. There may be minimal steps or uneven surfaces and some standing. Moderate May require moderate walking and extended standing. There may be steps or uneven surfaces. Strenuous May require extended periods of walking and standing. There may be numerous steps or uneven terrain. Trip Refund Policy Please choose your trips carefully. Once you have registered for a trip there will be no full refunds unless the Senior Center cancels the trip. An administrative charge of $10 will be assessed on cancellations. Trip refunds will be available until the date specified, minus the $10 administrative fee. Prevent the $10 administrative fee by transferring the full trip amount to another trip/class/program within the same season. Participants assume risk of change in personal circumstances or health. A daily Cook s special features a meat or other high protein dish, vegetable, and usually a starch or bread product at a cost of $4.50. Desserts range from fruit and custard pies to special homemade treats, and we always have ice cream sundaes. Drinks include coffee or tea, milk, juices, and the ever popular root beer float. The monthly menu is available at the Senior Center front desk, in the monthly newsletter and online at With the expanded schedule, our need for volunteers also increases; call us if you would like to join our wonderful group of kitchen volunteers. Special Elders Program The Special Elders program is a wonderful program offered at the Senior Center to those who are experiencing some issues with aging and require a little extra assistance. It was designed to allow seniors to enjoy good times with friends and the consistent company of other participants. The Special Elders eat lunch together every weekday at 11. (Bring money for lunch.) We play cards and table board games, Bingo on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and game and activity time is scheduled on Tuesdays. Fridays include shopping trips with Special Elders staff supporting participants throughout the trip. We take part in specially designed chair exercise programs for seniors with some physical challenges Monday through Friday. Facilitated groups geared to the interests of this population including Memory Fitness, Sharing Our Stories and A Story from a Picture are offered on Thursdays. Special events, including movies and monthly celebrations, are held every month. We also have speakers, parties, and special entertainment at various times during the year. The Special Elders staff does not provide personal care or individual supervision. Participants in Special Elders must be independently mobile. It is funded jointly by United Way of Lake County, federal CDBG funding, the City of Mentor, and Lake County Senior Levy Funding. 32 Fitness Center Use We have a wonderful fitness center with a variety of cardiovascular equipment including 5 treadmills, 3 bikes, 2 seated ellipticals, and 3 standing ellipticals. Our Tuff Stuff strength station offers a wide variety of exercises and the Precor stretch trainer offers great stretching options. You must be 55 years or older, a member of the senior center and must take the Exercise Equipment training class to utilize the fitness center. EXERCISE EQUIPMENT TRAINING Learn to use the cardiovascular equipment (including the treadmill, bikes, chair elliptical and standing elliptical) and the Tuff Stuff strength equipment safely in this 2 hour class. Learn proper form, seat settings, and weight settings and how to use a workout card to track your progress. Classes are limited to 4 participants and are taught by Certified Personal Fitness instructors. You must be a Senior Center Member and 55 years or older to use the fitness center. 35 LAKE COUNTY CHILI OPEN Saturday January 27, Tee Times Begin At 9 a.m., Black Brook Golf Course Golfers mark calendars! Here s your chance to play in the biggest golf event this winter. Every golfer has played in a summer tournament, but how many have played in January? You ll play nine snowy, fun holes of golf followed by a warm bowl of chili, hot dogs, and hot chocolate. Golfers will be challenged to drive shots across frozen tundra and putt balls laden with ice. You ll hit orange golf balls to snow covered greens on the 9 hole course of yard holes. Once you have registered for a trip there will be no full refunds unless the Senior Center cancels the trip. An administrative fee of $10 for trips canceled by the customer. Trip refunds, less the administrative fee, will be available until the date specified. Participants may transfer the full trip amount to another trip/class/program within the same season to avoid the administrative fee. Proof of residency is a current utility bill with both name and address on it along with photo identification. Not all zip codes are Mentor resident addresses. Mentor School District and the City of Mentor corporate limits are not the same. Mentor residents receive priority in registration and discounted fees. Kirtland and Kirtland Hills Residents Mentor has a reciprocal agreement with Kirtland and Kirtland Hills that allows the residents of these communities to register for programs and pay the resident fee. Residents in these communities must wait until nonresident registration to register. Proof of residency is a current utility bill with name and address on it and a photo identification. Please note that Mentor s reciprocal agreement with Mentor-on-the-Lake expired December 1, Please direct questions regarding this change to the City of Mentor-on-the-Lake. Inclement Weather Cancellations We make every attempt to hold classes when scheduled.
