The Boardroom Garrett Newell From the President Onwards to SLC! Hello Members! In just a short amount of time, we will all be attending the Georgia PBL State Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia! Like our District conferences, you will be able to network and take part in competitive events. However, State is where we truly get down to business! At State, how you place in your events will determine whether you will compete on a national level. In other words, this conference is more competitive. Don t be worried. The competitive nature at State is always friendly! The most important thing to remember is that you are competing to push your own boundaries, and to, of course, have fun! If you are not sure if you have been registered for State yet, please check with your advisor as soon as possible. Make certain that you know exactly which events you are participating in prior to attending the conference. You do NOT have to do the same competitive events that you did at District. Feel free to branch out and try something different! The SLC is a school function. Please use common sense, and do not partake in any inappropriate activities like drinking alcohol. If you are caught violating the conference rules (or your institution s), you will be sent home at your own expense! A few tips from the President: Dress professionally - Always Arrive to your events 10 minutes early Treat others with respect Remember to have fun!!! Looking forward to State, Garrett Newell 3 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter
The Boardroom Shannon Howard From the VP of Public Relations Social Media for SLC Calling All PBL Members! Georgia PBL has been busy this year! We are excited to see all the wonderful things our members are doing throughout the state. I encourage you to take advantage of the Georgia PBL Facebook Group and share your activities! The State Leadership Conference is just around the corner! Show Facebook who Georgia PBL is by making our conference a trending topic! #PBLSLC2017 and #LLL17 are the official hashtags for this conference! Be sure to use these and the hashtags below to share your events during the weekend-long conference! Conference updates will post on the Facebook group. Don t forget to download the EventBase app for the conference program. Search for Georgia PBL State Leadership Conference to see the program. An outline is already available, and will update as the conference nears. Spring Newsletter articles are due May 26. Submit articles on recruitment, FBLA-PBL Week, District Conferences, and, of course, the SLC! Be sure to include a photo or two! 6 The Boardroom From the VP of State Projects Lisa Steffy State Projects Update Hello PBL! The state packet is available on the georgiapbl.org website! While you re there, download the Awards of Merit, Chapter of the Year, and Adviser of the Year criteria! I hope that your chapter is working toward the Blue Seal Award of Merit at least! You might be surprised to find out that your chapter is close to a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum Award! These awards are a great way to show your school how involved your chapter is with its membership! The coveted Chapter of the Year Award is given to a single chapter that has the most activities based on criteria points; it is the ultimate chapter prize! Remember these awards are given at state! Don't let time run out for your chapter to be recognized. Also, nominate your adviser for the Adviser of the Year award! We need interns for State! If you are interested in this wonderful opportunity, visit the website to download the application. This is a good time to bring up the foundation! The annual Foundation Auction is held at State to raise money for scholarships. If you can find some sponsors willing to donate anything for the auction, that would be magnificent. You can also bring items for the auction as well! This money is given back to our members in the form of scholarships (applications on the website), and I would really love to see us raise a record amount this year! I am really looking forward to seeing everyone at state! I wonder which district is going to win the jar competition!? Remember, the district with the least amount of money wins. So, you need to put your money in the jar of the opposite district. If you haven t had a chance to participate, don t worry! We will have the jars available at State! #PBLStateProjects #COTY #AOTY #AOM #BlueSeal #BronzeSeal #SilverSeal #GoldSeal #PlatinumSeal #northvsouth Looking forward to seeing you at SLC, Lisa Steffy 5 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter
The Boardroom Shaunte Scott From the VP of National Projects National Projects Update Greetings Fellow Leaders! For many people, February is a month for love. For Phi Beta Lambda, it is a month full of activities! We kicked off the month with national event FBLA-PBL Week. Hopefully, your chapter participated in several of the unique events that took place each day of the event! Sunday was Share Your FBLA-PBL Story Day where students took to social media to share using #FBLAPBLWeek. Monday was the National Presidents Forum with an internet broadcast to start the week off. Tuesday was the Each One Reach One Day initiative that encouraged members to speak to their community and recruit on all levels. Wednesday was Adviser Appreciation Day and Professional Attire Day. Thursday, members were encouraged to get involved with their Professional Division with Career Awareness Day. Friday was the annual FBLA-PBL Spirit Day where chapters posted group photos on social media. Saturday finished off the week with the annual Community Service Day, encouraging chapters to get involved in their local communities. February is National Career and Technical Education Month. Many chapters invited speakers to share their stories about technical education. On February 3, the 75 th Anniversary of FBLA-PBL was celebrated by chapters across the nation! Hopefully, your chapter is working toward their Diamond Chapter status! REMINDER: CMAP, Action Awareness, and the annual membership dues deadlines is March 1. Don t miss your deadlines! #PBLNationalProjects #ActionAwareness #CMAP #Director #Executive #President #DiamondChapter #DiamondState Make Georgia a Diamond State! Shaunte Scott Spring

Eight members from the PBL 4201 Chapter brought home a total of 14 competitive awards and 1 chapter award. First place awards were presented to: Stephanie Jimenez for Accounting Principles and Business Communications, the Team of Teresa Kerce and Lisa Steffy for Business Ethics, Meghan Lovett for Marketing Analysis and Decision Making and Marketing Concepts, Ashley Prichard for Client Services, and Oscar Torres for Business Decision Making. Second place awards were presented to: Susan Musgrove for Job Interview, and Ashley Prichard, Retail Management. Third, Fourth, and Fifth place awards were presented to: Susan Musgrove, Client Services (3rd); Lisa Steffy, Public Speaking (4th); Oscar Torres, Help Desk (4th); and Shanique Moore, Job Interview (5th). In addition to these very talented students representing SRTC well, the PBL Chapter 4201 placed second in the Battle of the Chapters! We are very proud of all our students as they showed the upmost level of professionalism as they competed. It was the first time competing for five of the eight students. The success of these students is a confirmation that technical and career education remains very important not only in our community but in the workforce by bringing business and education together in a positive way. Spring
StateNews Season of Giving South Georgia Tech Americus Chapter concluded Season of Giving community service projects. The effort featured three concurrent drives: a Food Drive, Trauma Bear Drive, and Toys 4 Tots Drive. We were excited to donate: 1,201 non-perishable food items to Harvest of Hope, 123 stuffed animals to the local police department, and 20 toys to the local Department of Family and Children Services. Since the initiative began in 2014, you have helped us donate 2,358 non-perishable food items, 414 stuffed animals, and 116 Toys for Tots. We appreciate each and every effort to ensure that every member of our community had a great holiday season. 11 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter
StateNews 2nd Annual Holiday Giveaway Celebration Columbus Tech- Macon - Wanting to put a twist on the holiday giveaway this year, PBL officer Monike Titus, Treasurer/VP of Community Affairs, decided to reach out to Navicent Children s Hospital. As a first time event, the hospital created an in-house toy store, the Holly Jolly Shop, where parents shopped and wrapped gifts for their children, patients in the hospital. Parents were also able to choose gifts for the patient s siblings. Within two weeks, PBL members collected over 50 toys and, on December 16th, Ms. Waye and Shaunte Scott delivered the toys. Amazed by the Holly Jolly concept and the room full of toys, the team has added this location to their list of donation sites. A special thanks to those on campus who donated: Patricia Purser of the CLICK Lab, Debbie Henshaw and Sam Oliver on behalf of the Financial Aid, Berthenia Smith and Maketa Smith on behalf of the Nursing Department, Cynthia Graves and Gypsi Alexander on the behalf of Purchasing and the Care Center (Ms. Elaine, Ms. Meg and Ms. Rachetau). An extra special thanks to Heather Trescott, of Navicent, for allowing us to be a part of this event. On December 19th, PBL advisors, Pamela Knight and Crystal Waye, had the pleasure of surprising a local family with an early Christmas present. The Barron Family was set to move into their new Habitat home just in time for Christmas. Knowing the family was moving in with limited items, the PBL team decided to help this family a little further than last year s recipients. To continue with last year s Christmas dinner tradition, not only did the team donate a full holiday spread, to include a ham, side dishes and dessert, they also donated Christmas decorations, household items/dishes and over $150 worth of groceries and toiletries. The family was also blessed with Christmas toys for their son and daughter. A special thanks to Christopher Cunningham and Ken Lockhart for their donations to the family! An extra special thanks to Ms. Connie, Habitat Volunteer Coordinator, for allowing us to be a part of this event two years in a row. Spring

StateNews Each One Reach One with Breakfast West Georgia Technical College- Douglas Chapter started National FBLA-PBL week with the Each One Reach One initiative. To accomplish this, officers came up with the idea for a boxed breakfast on the go for students that have early classes on campus. Officers and members met and put together 40 boxes filled with muffins, a banana and a bottle of water. While passing the boxes out to fellow students, the members told them that the boxes were courtesy of Phi Beta Lambda and explained what PBL was about. Students were very appreciative about having breakfast mostly because they were running late and did not have time to stop to get something to eat. This was a great opportunity for PBL members and officers to get the word out about PBL. Spring

StateNews FBLA Day in Thomasville, Georgia SRTC Thomasville Chapter had an exciting month. First, members traveled to Macon to compete at the district conference. Chapter members took home a combined total of 17 awards! The following week, on February 16, 2017, the Thomasville chapter hosted their annual FBLA Day. Five high schools with a total of 115 students and advisors were invited to the event. Attendees were treated to speakers, workshops and a host of teambuilding activities. The visitors learned about PBL, and how to make the transition from high school to collegiate clubs. Chapter members and attendees ate lunch together, and the event proved to be a great day! Spring
StateNews Groundhog Job Shadow Day SGTC- Americus Chapter and friends, including SGTC resident assistants, were selected to participate in a college student focus groups conducted on January 30th. The focus group was an initiative of the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce in an effort to develop leadership programming for Emerging Leaders. The discussions, facilitated by the Fanning Institute, explored the needs of college students and will inform program planning decisions. Dr. John Watford, President, and Mr. Paul Farr, Director of Business and Industry Services as well as Sumter County Chamber Leadership Development Division Chair, were on hand to welcome the participants. A similar focus group was also hosted on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University. Three officers of the Americus Campus Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda participated in the PBL Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 2nd. Racarda Blackmon, President; Ashley Halstead, 1st Vice-President; and Fierra Riley, Secretary, took the opportunity to expand their horizons by observing mentors perform their job duties. Racarda opted to shadow a position in which an employee is coordinating and managing personal services tasks for clients. Ashley loves reading and got a firsthand perspective on the operations of a college bookstore. Fierra conducted her job shadow with an LPN Supervisor. In all, the students shared that they gained valuable insights that will influence their future decision-making. 17 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter
StateNews FBLA Regional Conference SRTC Moultrie Chapter hosted the FBLA Region I Leadership Conference on the Veterans Parkway Campus on January 13. PBL members from Thomasville and Tifton chapters volunteered to assist the Moultrie Campus chapter by serving as time keepers and door keepers for competitive events. This annual event is one of the few opportunities to get all three SRTC chapters and FBLA students from high schools across our service area in one spot at the same time! The FBLA Conference welcomed over 600 visitors to the SRTC campus with over 400 FBLA members. FBLA Region 1 consists of 27 counties in Southwest Georgia. Spring
