StateNews New Student Orientation in Vidalia! VIDALIA, GEORGIA This summer, Southeastern Technical College s (STC) chapter of Phi Beta Lambda has been working non-stop to raise awareness and participation for their student organization. On May 16, 2017, the Georgia PBL Vice President of Membership, Michael Harden worked alongside several PBL members at STC s New Student Orientation to encourage incoming students to participate in their chapter. The chapter used a display to show cased their current event and past successes to new students as they toured the campus for the upcoming summer semester. Although this event only lasted for a few hours, Michael was able to gain two new members and lots of inquiries for the 2017 fall semester. It was a great way to get a head start for fall semester while also bringing in two new students to join us for the summer, states Michael. In addition, STC is looking to start a new PBL chapter on their Swainsboro campus so the push for membership has never been greater. On August 10, 2017, STC s PBL chapter participated in an additional show case of their organization at the New Student Fall 2017 Orientation. They are also looking forward to displaying their organization at STC s Club Week on both the Vidalia and Swainsboro Campuses. The STC s Vidalia campus PBL chapter has set a goal to double in membership over the next year. With current and future events planned for the chapter, their goal will soon be a reality! 9 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter

StateNews A Busy Summer in Thomasville! Thomasville, GA Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC), Thomasville PBL has had a very active summer. The chapter hosted a watermelon day where they sliced up ice cold watermelon to give to students to help cool off from the heat; it s been a very hot summer! In August, the chapter bought 24 book bags stuffed with school supplies to help underprivileged grammar school students. Before both Summer and Fall semesters, chapter members served juice, water and doughnuts to prospective PBL members as they purchased their textbooks. During the Summer Semester, the chapter held a big event. A workshop on the many forms of Abuse, the event had a panel of speakers and guests from outside the college. The workshop was designed to help educate the public on abuse, how to spot signs of abuse, and resources that can help victims. The chapter is currently working on their latest recruitment project; painting rocks with messages for a recruitment activity for fall! As a city, Thomasville is very much into painting rocks for others to find, so this activity ties into the community! 11 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter

StateNews Meet N Greet in Americus! AMERICUS, GEORGIA South Georgia Technical College s Phi Beta Lambda Americus campus chapter held a meet and greet event to inform potential new members about the organization. Nearly 30 students attended the meet n greet event to talk and learn about PBL SGTC s largest student organization from advisors and current members. Students enjoyed pizza, soft drinks and a door prize giveaway as they heard about the organization from PBL advisors Dr. Andrea Oates and Donna Lawrence and current PBL members. After meeting other students through a cooperative exercise, current members shared their experiences with the potential new members, including details of their June trip to California for the National Leadership Conference in which five students brought home 21 awards and recognitions. Lawrence, a SGTC adjunct instructor and PBL advisor, said she hopes to see several new faces in the organization this semester. The Fall semester is fun and it s always busy, she said. We do a lot to help the community like adopting a family to help out during the holidays, hosting canned food drives, collecting Trauma Bears, and running a Toys for Tots donation. Although it s busy, it s a great thing to be a part of, chapter officer Alicia English said. It costs $20 to join, but you get so much more out of it than that. I promise you that! Summer

StateNews PBL Rocks! Moultrie, GA Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC), Moultrie PBL Chapter sponsored a membership recruitment drive give away who found and brought painted rocks to a chapter meeting in early September. Chapter members spent the day painting small rocks in neon colors with SRTC PBL written on the bottom of the rock. After, members placed the rocks around the campus for students to find. Students who found the rocks turned them in for tickets. The more rocks they found, the more tickets they received. A drawing was held for gift cards following the chapter meeting. The meeting focused on a recruitment and orientation presentation to learn about PBL and what the chapter does. 13 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter

StateNews March of Dimes Garage Sale! CARROLLTON, GEORGIA West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) PBL Chapter held its sixth annual Community Yard Sale! Members created posters and set them up around the community prior to the event. Local radio stations played advertisements for the event. Members contacted vendors from years prior to see if they wanted to participate again. Held in the campus parking lot, vendors could purchase booths based on parking space sizes. A large portion of the booth rental fees went to March of Dimes. During the big event, the chapter sold breakfast foods and coffee in the morning and grilled hot dogs, chips and soda for lunch. The chapter partnered with the local Goodwill for the event. At the end of the garage sale, vendors could choose to leave their items behind. The team at Goodwill collected the remaining items as donations. As usual, this event produced a fantastic turn out. The community enjoyed the flea-market styled event with one-stop shopping. The chapter looks forward to many more years of this event! Summer

StateNews Family Fun Day Douglasville, GA For the second year in a row, students from Strayer University volunteered for the annual Family Fun Day held by Representative Roger Bruce at Sweetwater Creek State Park. This is a fun filled day where the kids can round up some catfish; enjoy the park and the sponsor s hospitality. Held every year, this free event is filled with food, music, bounce houses and fishing for youths 12 and under. The Douglasville chapter had a great time watching the kids learn how to fish. The program gave away fishing equipment to all the kids that came out. We look forward to this event next year! 15 Be Georgia PBL Newsletter
