WWHS Band Earns 1st Place and Superior Ratings in Orlando Festival The West Wilkes High School Band has successfully returned from their Spring Festival Trip held by Music U.S.A. Festivals at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The WWHS Concert Band under the direction of Matthew Dauer attended the competitive festival during a 4 day trip from April 5-8. The Band performed on Soundstage 33 and was evaluated on Music Performance by three judges in the areas of Tone, Intonation, Ensemble Technique, Interpretation, Balance, and Literature. The clinicians and adjudicators evaluating the WWHS Band were: Maestro Anthony Hose, Principal Conductor of the Stetson University Orchestra and Welsh Chamber Orchestra; Dr. Sandra Peter, Composer, professor and conductor of choral music at Stetson University: and Dr. Douglas Phillips Director of the Stetson University Symphonic Band. All three adjudicators awarded the Blackhawk Band straight Superior ratings which is the highest level a band can earn in performance as well as being awarded 1st place in their Concert Band category. The Blackhawk Band would like to thank all of of their chaperones who escorted the young musicians and our community supporters who helped raise funds for this trip. The trip was entirely funded by the students, WWHS Band Boosters and many businesses and individuals in our Wilkes County community. A plaque commemorating the communities support will be installed during the band s Spring Concert on May 4th at 7pm in the West Wilkes High School Gymnasium. The concert is free and open to the public. Photos courtesy of Music USA Festivals
UTA & T3LC Complete Youth Leadership Service Project Students in UTA and T3LC completed their youth leadership service projects on March 29 th. Students put stencil art on the walls of East Wilkes Middle School which would inspire students. Students also spent time at Rose Glenn Assisted Living and helped with an Easter Egg Hunt!
WCHS Welding Team Places 1 st in State Congratulations to Jacob Ballard, Parker Jones, and Noah Osborne. The WCHS Welding Team placed 1st in state competition in Greensboro and will now represent WCHS and WCC at the national competition in Louisville, KY in June. The students are part of College and Career Promise a partnership with Wilkes Community College. Tyson Summers serves as the student's instructor from WCC. We are very proud of these young men and wish them best of luck in June. Other teams in different departments will compete this week at the state competition in Greensboro. Good Luck Eagles!
EWMS Students Participate in All State Chorus Congratulations to Hallie Younger, Morgan Strelko, Josie Wallis, Makinna Mathis and Jade Gardner for participating in the 2018 North Carolina Middle School All State Chorus at the Greensboro Coliseum April EWMS 8th Graders Visit Hickory Crawdads and Lenoir- Rhyne University On Wednesday, April 11th, EWMS 8th graders toured the Hickory Crawdads Baseball Stadium and learned about potential job opportunities in the sports field. After, they went to Lenoir-Rhyne University for a self-guided tour of the campus which included the football field, library, chapel, and student union. Aside from the beautiful weather, students were made aware of the many opportunities that are out there for colleges and careers!
Traphill Elementary Raises the Roof for Reading Students at Traphill Elementary were very excited to see their principal, Mr. Ortiz go on the roof on Monday, April 23rd. He was supporting "Raising the Roof for Reading," a fundraiser for the school library. Mr. Ortiz braved the rain and wind and stayed on the roof of Traphill Elementary school all day and all night to complete the challenge. If the goal of $2,500 was reached he would stay on the roof for the day. If the goal of $5,000 was reached he would also spend the night. Many of the books at Traphill Elementary were out of date. The community showed fantastic support to raise over $7,000 for the library. The students and teachers have made suggestions on what to purchase for the new books. Mrs. Gentry, media specialist, plans to purchase the new books over the summer and have them ready when school begins next year!
NWMS Hosts Career Day On April 13th, North Wilkes Middle hosted a career day. With the help of local professionals, they were able to provide students with an opportunity to discover many different career paths!
