PERFORMANCE/TRIP ITINERARY Posted outside the high school band room weekly. Dear Shawnee Band Parent: You should be very proud that your son/daughter has chosen to take the challenge of being a part of the Shawnee High School Band Program. There are numerous studies that show a direct connection between a student's involvement in high school band programs and their positive development as a total person, including their academic success. To those of us directly involved in music education, this news comes as no surprise. Daily we see the benefits of goal setting, team work, and a positive work ethic. The Shawnee High School Band is concerned with the development of the "Whole Person". Mrs. Patricia Meeks, Mr. Dan Meeks Band Directors Shawnee Local Schools
THE SHAWNEE HIGH BAND (What is it really all about?) The main emphasis of the band program is on musicianship, showmanship, pride of accomplishment, confidence, tradition, spirit, loyalty, and especially citizenship. It is the pride of a job well done, and the accomplishments achieved that make the rehearsal schedule worthwhile. It is possible by setting your schedule up in a wise manner to have a successful marching band season and participate in athletics, or hold down a part time job, as well as maintain a high scholastic standing. The success of the organization will lead to success in the individual and visa-versa. Dear High School Band Member, or Perspective Member: To help all band students stay organized and enjoy being a vital part of a successful season this handbook is packed full of as much information as is available at this time regarding the band's practice and performance schedule, rules, and expectations. It is important that each member and his or her parents read through all materials carefully. If you have questions at any time, please feel free to ask for help from any staff member! (band office phone ) The marching season has been designed with a "no-nonsense", "Quality not Quantity" rehearsal and performance schedule, which we believe will be very exciting. You have taken the first step towards a GREAT EXPERIENCE with the Shawnee Band, and we are sure this year will be remembered for the rest of your life. The friends you make in the band will become some of your best friends in high school! The Shawnee Band Program has a proud history and YOU are now a part of an exciting future! Never overlook YOUR importance in this band program or your contribution to the success of the band's performances, and be proud of your accomplishments! Congratulations! Get ready for a "super" year! Sincerely, Mrs. Patricia Meeks, Mr. Dan Meeks Band Directors Shawnee Local Schools (office phone) meeksp@limashawnee.com meeksd@limashawnee.com
PHILOSOPHY To learn good musicianship through an educational process that leads to excellence and enjoyment in performance. To provide entertainment at selected school and community events. To promote all positive aspects of the Shawnee High School Marching Band, Concert & Symphonic Bands, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Shawnee High School, and the Shawnee Community. Shawnee Marching Band Policies, Procedures & Guidelines 1. Proper clothing must be worn at all times on Campus, and during rehearsals. Shoes: no bare feet are permitted. Proper marching tennis shoes on the field with socks, NO HIGH TOPS for marching rehearsals, or long jeans. Shirts/tops must be worn at all times., "tube tops, spaghetti straps", bathing suits are not acceptable marching clothing, girls/guys are to wear t-shirt type shirts to prevent sunburns. Staff has the right to ask a student to reverse his/her shirt if wording or graphics are questionable. 2. No unassigned individualized playing/spinning of equipment in buildings. 3. Cell phones are the responsibility of students, and cannot be used in any rehearsal. 4. NO initiation of any individual or group is permitted by Shawnee School Board Policy, State of Ohio Statute, College Rules, and Band Director s Personal Philosophy. Any student who attempts or participates in anything that might be interpreted as initiation will be sent home from Band Camp. NO REFUND. 5. All students will treat other students with respect, on and off the field. 6. If you are ill and must miss a rehearsal a doctor s note is required for the absence to be excused. 7. Appointments are not to be scheduled the week of band camp, your cooperation is appreciated. 8. Keep your instrument, music, drill charts, chips and tool belt with you at all times. CHALLENGES for Shawnee Band Members: 1. AVOID WASTING TIME.Work hard when it's time to work! 2. Be sure to understand and follow the BAND RULES. Our GOAL must always be to project the proper image of ourselves & our organization. 3. Practice at HOME. "YOU practice, WE rehearse". You must do both to be successful. 4. Learn & demonstrate the true meaning of respect and gratitude. 5. Strive to be the first to get things done! Individual preparation/perfection takes place outside of full rehearsal. Get music and routine memorized as soon as possible. 6. Learn to have total concentration at practice and performances. 7. Learn to develop a quiet learning atmosphere. 8. Learn to be organized. 9. Allow instructors to teach, not babysit! TEAMWORK = STAFF & STUDENTS! 10. Learn to deal with it! Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. The "Band of One" means UNITY IN GOALS. If all members strive to achieve our goals, there is no limit to our success this year!
SHAWNEE HIGH SCHOOL BAND General Policies All Shawnee High School Rules, as outlined in the SHS student handbook are in effect during all rehearsals, and performances. (NO tobacco, alcohol, drugs/chemicals, or inappropriate behavior will be tolerated). No gum, food, or drinks in the band room, no trash is to be left in any room. Do not damage chairs, stands, or equipment. Personally owned instruments shall be kept clean and in good working order. School owned instruments will be issued on the basis of availability and seniority. All instruments must be given the best of care. Any unnecessary damage will be repaired by the person responsible for that instrument. Do not allow anyone else to play your horn! Music memorization test scores will be averaged into your nine week grade. Football games: No non-band members may sit with the band, our bleachers are reserved for band members only. Band members will be given the 3rd quarter of each game as "break time" to use RR facilities, get refreshments, visit friends, etc. All band members are expected to conduct themselves properly, and remember that you represent the band and Shawnee HS. Remember we want to be a CLASS ACT all the time! Uniforms must be worn properly at all times, including break, i.e. keep the bibs up at all times. Bus trips: All members are required to ride the bus provided to all performances. Students will sign up for a bus for the entire season. The bus driver and two adult chaperones are IN CHARGE. Media players are only allowed with headphones. No drum sticks or mallets on the bus. Any student needing to ride "home" from an event with THEIR parent/guardian must submit a "transportation release form", (yellow form) in advance. This form must be signed by the 1) student, 2) legal parent/guardian, 3)band director. In the case of a school sponsored athletic event conflict causing a band member to not be able to ride the bus to an event, a "yellow form" must be submitted in advance. NO EXCEPTIONS. Public display of affection: All school policies will be enforced. THINK FIRST! Esprit de corps: Think before you speak. "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Respect diversity in the band. Uniforms: A complete set of uniform care instructions are in this handbook. We are only as good as we look. Take good care of YOUR uniforms! Wear them properly at all times. During football games ONLY a "Red Band Coat" will be worn over the uniform, or a BAND HOODIE (available for order in August). NO personally owned coats may be worn. ONLY a BAND hat (3 styles available) can be worn while in uniform.
PERFORMANCE PROCEDURES & POLICIES Football games: The band room will open at 15 minutes before scheduled report time. Home game rehearsals begin at 6:00 pm, on our practice field (games begin at 7:00 pm). NO book bags, or duffel bags are permitted at the games. Cell phones are to be locked inside your hall way locker during games/performances. Be ready to play at any time in the bleachers! Percussion and tubas sit in the front row ONLY. (right side) If you need to use the RR, ask first. You may not go into the stadium seats, plan ahead if you need $. 3rd quarter break: be back, in your seat, ready to play with 1 minute left in the 3rd q. All band members are to stay for the entire game, any special requests must be submitted in advance for consideration. Games are usually over by 9:30 pm, please have rides here, a phone is available in the band office if you need to call. Away games: Away games: departure schedule will be published weekly depending on distance. No food, drinks, (other than water bottle), or candy on the bus at any time!
