1 The Stephen Decatur High School 9913 Seahawk Road Berlin, Maryland Main Office: Guidance: Thomas D. Zimmer, Principal Seahawk Press Volume VII APRIL 2015 A Message From The Principal Thomas D. Zimmer Dear Parents & Guardians, It is hard to believe that spring is here! A number of programs, assemblies, ceremonies, banquets and graduation exercises are quickly approaching. This is the busiest time of the year and I hope that we all continue to work together to see that all of our school sponsored activities are successful. Please continue to log on to our school website or follow us on twitter to get up to date information about events happening at school. We continue to look for ways to keep the school community as informed as possible. I would like to thank all of the parents that took the time to fill out the Worcester County Communications Survey. It is truly an opportunity for your voice to be heard. Just a reminder to everyone that school will be in session for 1/2 day on Thursday, April 2 with a dismissal time of 12:15 p.m. to make up for days missed due to snow. Schools will then be closed for Spring Break from Friday, April 3 through Monday, April 6. At the end of April, we will hold our pre-prom assembly for juniors and seniors. Although this program is very informative in nature, it may be a very difficult subject for some students. If you feel the need, you may elect to have your son/ daughter not attend this assembly. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please feel free to contact on of the administrators. On May 9, many of our students will be attending the prom and after prom party. The after prom party has been very successful in years past largely due to the support and cooperation of those parents and community members who have committed time, talent and donations to the after prom party. Parents will be taking reservations for this no cost event in the cafeteria one week prior to the prom during all lunch shifts. Students MAY NOT attend the after prom party unless they sign up in advance! Neither activity, the prom or after prom party, is open to middle school students. On Wednesday, May 6, we will hold our Scholastic Recognition Banquet honoring our students for their academic achievements. This event is sponsored by the Berlin/Ocean City Optimist Club and the Worcester County Board of Education and is held at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City. To be invited, students must have earned a 3.5 weighted grade point average for four consecutive marking terms. For 9th grade students or students new to our school, the requirement is three consecutive marking terms. Invitations will be mailed to those students who meet the necessary requirements. This is a special evening for all of us at SDHS and we look forward to seeing many of you there! As we forge on into the final months of the school year, I would like to commend parents/guardians, students, and staff members of their level of commitment placed in our school. We are very fortunate to have all of you working on our behalf and we cannot thank you enough for all that you do! 2 FROM THE ATHLETIC BOOSTERS Welcome to spring as we know it! Cold, windy, rainy, cancellations, event updates and then a glimmer of sun and warmer temperatures is the norm for us. Whatever the weather, we are rolling into our final season of the school year. Thank you to all of the parents that attended the Spring Sports meeting that was held recently. Your interest in our kids, their athletics and the upcoming season is greatly appreciated. We were very pleased with all of the help from our parents during our winter season and look forward to your help as we enter our spring season. We have team parents for each sport that will be taking care of signing up workers for our concession stand shifts. Please refer to them for questions or to sign up for a shift. They are; Jeanene Gwin-Boys Lacrosse, Kim Florek-Girls Lacrosse and Kim Holloway, Baseball. Amy Willliams has gracefully stepped forward to open the concession stand for our remaining home Track Meets. If you are interested in working for a bit of time during those meets (because they can be long), please contact her. Now that Spring Sports is in full swing, all teams should have decided on and discussed a theme for their Golf Tournament Silent Auction Basket. Please refer to your Coach or team parent as to their theme so that you can make a contribution. The Silent Auction Portion of the Golf Tournament is extremely popular and very successful, so we thank you for your donations! Our remaining meetings for the rest of the school year are April 8 and May 13 at 6:00 in the Teacher s Lounge. Please try to attend one or both of these meetings and see what The Athletic Boosters is all about. We cannot be successful without your help and input. If you ever have any questions, ideas or concerns please contact any of our officers. Kim Holloway, President Ashley Furbay, Secretary Kate Coates, Vice President Kim Mumford, Treasurer

3 Band Booster News Welcome to the month of April. With the month of adjudications over, the SDHS instrumental program can focus on other things. Some of which include the fine arts festival and All Shore Honor Band. Speaking about All Shore Honor Band, the booster club would like to again congratulate Lucas Quillen and William Rothermel for making the 2015 group. These young men will be joined by other talented musicians from around the shore for a concert on April 10 th. The other big concert event will be the Worcester County Fine Arts Festival, which will be held here at SDHS on April 28th. There will be fine arts and musical performances from all the schools around the county. The evening will culminate with performances from both our All County Choir and our All County Band, of which the best musicians from Worcester County are included! Mr. Shuster and the percussion ensemble will continue their work Wednesday afternoons from 3pm until 5pm. It is essential that all of our participants make each and every scheduled rehearsal. With the Spring concert only a month away, 5 rehearsals will go very fast through the month of April, so attendance is important. Now, we can t forget the jazz combo. These talented musicians have their 1 st performance for the Kiwanis Club breakfast on April 22 nd. The class only began in February and with all of the snow, these folks have made incredible progress. The combo will be performing before the breakfast begins with a big selection of jazz standards and contemporary tunes. The boosters would like to remind all band parents of the next 2 band booster meetings, both at 6pm in the band room. Those dates being April 1 st and May 6 th. We hope to see you all then! Worcester County Fine Arts Festival Worcester County Public Schools will hold its annual Fine Arts Festival on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, Maryland. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. The visual arts gallery, which showcases the artistic talents of Worcester County PreK-12 th grade students, will be open from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Elementary and middle school choirs will perform from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the school s auditorium, followed by the All- County Band and the All-County Chorus performances. The free-admission festival is open to the public. Please contact Tamara Mills at for more information.
