This learning opportunity includes great speakers, skill-building workshops, commercial exhibits, time to exchange ideas, make new friends, and entertain just for fun. Teen 4-H volunteers are welcome too. You may submit a proposal to teach a workshop as well. Montana is preparing to host an exciting and informative leadership forum. There will be over 60 hands-on educational workshops, national speakers and local entertainment. The conference hotel for the 2014 WRLF event will be the Crowne Plaza located in downtown Billings, MT. 2 Idaho State Angus Associate Show and Sale CSI Expo Center February 8th Registration 8:30 am Judging 9:00 am Page 2 The College has extended an invitation for any of our 4-H Club s judging teams to participate in the contest. Teams to consist of 3 members, with no limit to number of alternates. Registration is preferred by Feb 5th, but will accept walk in enrollment. The dates are February 28th March 2nd. Winter Camp is sponsored by the Central Idaho 4-H Camp and is located about 17 miles North of Ketchum, ID at mile marker 146. Camp Registration is $25.00 Bus Fee is $15.00 *Ski or snowshoe rental $15.00 (not required) Any teen who is years of age on January 1, 2014 are able to attend. Teens do not have to be involved in 4-H to participate in Winter Camp. More details available in application packet. 3 Page 3 Workshops: Jerome County Market Animal Sale Presents: Livestock Education Day February 22, 2014 Registration begins at 8:30 Workshops start at 9:00 2:00 (There will be both Senior and Junior Divisions; lunch is provided) Messersmith Building at Jerome County Fairgrounds Animal Selection, Showmanship, Nutrition, Animal Health, Record Books, Sheep Tail Docking The Jerome County Market Animal Sale Committee strongly encourages all youth taking a market animal to the 2014 fair attend this education day. The Sale Committee has worked hard to have some great speakers, great door prizes, and wonderful food. Interested in doing a breeding or market project but not sure you have enough money saved? Check out the Youth Loan Program from the USDA Farm Service Agency. The U.S. Department of Agriculture s Farm Service Agency makes operating loans of up to $5,000 to eligible individual rural youths age to finance income-producing, agriculture-related projects. The project must be of modest size, educational, and initiated, developed and carried out by rural youths participating in 4-H clubs, FFA, or a similar organization. Leadership Washington Focus (LFW)- New Program for Middle School Aged Youth Leadership Washington Focus (LFW) is 4-H s only national experience designed specifically for youth entering grades 7-9. During LWF middle School 4-H ers have the opportunity to engage their peers at the national level around the subjects of innovation, service, and perspective taking. Delegates will gain key leadership skills such as: Build confidence in their ability to motivate and direct others in meaningful action Learn to communicate effectively with others through discussion and public speaking Collaborate with peers of divers backgrounds to create and accomplish goals Develop an understanding of their own personal leadership style Delegates will learn by doing through experiential learning opportunities facilitated in our nation s capital by our team of Program Assistants. This new and exciting opportunity is designed specifically for middle school 4-H ers and provides them with the knowledge and experiences to help begin their journey as leaders in their communities, our nation, and our world. Retreat Teen Ambassador Leadership Kit Campus Grove Albion, ID March 21-23, 2014 Page Workshops Event Planning, Job Skills, & Goal Setting Registration is limited to the first 48 youth who apply and who are within the ages of on Jan. 1st. $50 for weekend, or return the registration by Feb 25th to receive a $10 discount. All registrations will need to be completed online through 4- HOnline. In order to apply you must be currently enrolled in 4-H. Current enrollment means your status in 4-H Online is Active; enrollment paperwork has been approved and enrollment fees have been paid. If you do not have an active status in 4-H Online you will not see/be able to apply for this event. 1. After a county 4-H staff member has approved your enrollment, log into 4-H Online. Select Register a Member in an Event which will appear at the bottom of the family page. 2. Follow the online event registration steps for 4-H T.A.L.K. Retreat 3. Print the invoice from 4-H Online for the event. 4. Mail your registration fee payment (make check payable to Minidoka Co. Extension) to Minidoka County Extension, 85 East Baseline, Rupert, ID Registrations close March 7th. 5. Let your county 4-H staff member know that you have submitted an application for 4-H T.A.L.K. Retreat so they can approve it on 4-H Online. Transportation is not provided for this event. Families Sought to Host Summer Visitors From Japan, Costa Rica, and Finland Idaho 4-H families are needed to host visiting teens this summer. The Japanese students are ages they will arrive July 21 and depart August 17. Teens ages from Costa Rica and Finland will be in the country from July 8 August 6. Host families need to have a child of the same gender and approximately the same age as the student they will host. Applications to host students from Finland and Costa Rica are due February 15. Applications to host Japanese students will be accepted until all students are placed. 5 Page 5 Hoard s Dairyman Cow Judging Contest Are you looking for an idea for your club meeting? How about trying the dairy cow winter judging contest? This contest is for anyone; individuals, families, or teams. You don t have to have a dairy project to be eligible. Get at least 5 members of your club together to judge photos of the five classes of dairy cows (one of each of the five breeds. Only one entry per division, however members may enter with their 4-H club, family, and individually. Four cash awards will be given to the winning 4-H clubs: 1st $100 2nd $75 3rd $50 4th $25 The official placings and reasons will be published in the April issue of Hoard s Dairyman, The National Dairy Farm Magazine, along with a copy of the formal scoring key. Winners will be announced in the May issue. Entry forms are available at the Jerome County Extension Office or online at: Entries must be postmarked on or before March 20, Teen Conference 2014 Superheroes Find Your Power June 9-13 Youth finishing grades 8-12 may attend. College age young adults may attend as college staff members, and adults as chaperones. $100 scholarships are offered for adults who undertake primary teaching responsibility for a conference track. Conference registration packed will be ed in mid-march to past participants of Know Your Government and Teen Conference who are eligible to attend based on age. Adults and delegates who are interested in receiving a registration packet by may request one from the 4-H website: The deadline for early bird registration is April 15th, $250 for youth delegates, $175 for adult chaperones. Regular registration is May 17, $275 for delegates, $200 for chaperones. State 4-H Archery Shoot The State 4-H Archery shoot will be held on April 5, 2014 at the Twin Falls County Fairgrounds. There will be three divisions: Junior 8-10 years old Intermediate years old Senior 14 and over There will be both compound and recurve bow categories. Registration and match guideline information will be available later this month. The top 4 seniors in both compound and recurve will be eligible to represent Idaho at the National 4-H Shooting Sports competition in Grand Isle, Nebraska.
6 FEMA Seeks Applicants for Youth Preparedness Council Page 6 The U.S. Department of Homeland Security s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council. Youth leaders (ages 12-17) who are dedicated to public service, making a difference in their community, or have experienced a disaster that have motivated them to make a positive difference are eligible to apply. Members serve on the Council for one year. During this time they have the opportunity to complete a self-selected youth preparedness project and to share their opinions, experiences, ideas, solutions and questions regarding youth disaster preparedness with the leadership of FEMA and national youth preparedness organizations. Youth interested in applying must submit a completed application and two letters of recommendation. All applications and supporting materials must be received no later than February 24, New Youth Preparedness Council members will be announced in May. You can find more information and application forms at: For over 100 years, the University of Idaho Extension 4-H Youth Development program has led in providing experiential education, which enables youth to acquire essential life skills to become productive, contributing members of society. As we enthusiastically move forward in positively shaping the lives of Idaho youth for generations to come, an effort has been launched to establish an Idaho 4-H specialty license plate. Proceeds from this program would enhance 4-H Youth Development programs across Idaho by funding educational 4-H events, securing supplemental resource materials, plus increase scholarship and leadership training opportunities. For your convenience, a copy of the proposed bill and supporting information can be viewed at District III Horse & Pony Education Extravaganza Wednesday, February 26, :30 pm Jerome County Fairgrounds Messersmith Building Jim Wilson from Northern Idaho will be here to speak on the importance of wearing a helmet while riding. He will be able to explain and answer questions as to why the 4-H Program and the University of Idaho have made this mandatory in our horse 4-H program.
7 Page 7 Natural Resources Camp Central Idaho 4-H Camp Ketchum, ID June 23-June 28, 2014 The camp is for youth years old. Registration is $235 due by May 1. Late registration is $255. Scholarships may be available through your local Soil Conservation District. The Natural Resources Campy has been a summer program since Spend a week near beautiful Sun Valley exploring and studying Idaho s natural resources! Discover nature s secrets for yourself by conducting experiments and completing outdoor projects. This is a hands-on camp. Also enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, volleyball, archery, survival, target shooting, and fireside sing -alongs. Rule Changes for Fair Dairy Heifers Dairy heifers must be a dairy breed and will be checked at the initial weigh in. If it is not a dairy breed, the 4-H/ FFA member will have 2 days from weigh in to locate a dairy breed to be weighed in. Market Goat Weight/ADG Changes The new ADG is.30. The new minimum weight at fair time is 70lbs. Sheep Rule Change All lambs to be docked at the distal end of the caudal fold. Any lambs docked shorter will be able to show and sell, but the floor price will be deducted from the final check and the animal will need to be taken home with 4-H/ FFA member and not sent to resale. Rabbit/Poultry Change All rabbit and poultry cages are to be locked for their own protection. Equestrian Headgear Policy 4-H & FFA members participating in any 4-H equestrian activity must wear an approved helmet whenever they are mounted on an equine or in an equine driven vehicle (cart, wagon, buggy). An approved helmet meets the minimum performance standards imposed by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) F163 and includes certification and labeling required by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI). The helmet must be properly fitted with the harness engaged and properly fastened.
8 Page 8 Jerome 4-H Leader s Council is looking for a Food Both Manager. The following is a list of responsibilities and duties involved in the position. If you are interested, contact the Jerome County Extension Office: 600 2nd Ave W, or (208) for an application. Jerome County 4-H Food Booth Manager The 4-H Food Booth is the only fundraiser for the Jerome County 4-H Leaders Association. The money earned goes toward helping 4-Her s with scholarships to 4-H Camp, Teen Conference, Know Your Government, college scholarships, awards, state and national trips as well as many leader opportunities. Every effort should be made to ensure a reasonable profit. March- Fair Work on getting donations for the food booth. Look at menu; work with Committee and see if any changes are needed. April July Submit IRS Form 1099 to 4-H Leaders Association Treasurer. Any compensation over the amount of $ paid during the year to any one for work performed requires that a 1099 be filed and reported to the IRS. Mandatory Food Safety education provided by the District Health Department. Purchase non-perishable supplies. Work with the Extension Office or Leader s Council Treasurer. Attend June 4-H Leaders Association meeting to provide menu and prices. The menu must be approved by the association. Attend July 4-H Leaders Association meeting & receive the shift schedule and report any other information. Confirm booth and equipment are clean & organized prior to fair. Notify Leader s Council of any problems or requests prior to fair. Get starting cash from 4-H Extension Office to start booth Tuesday morning of fair. 1 week prior to Fair Pick up work schedule from Extension Office make phone calls to fill any empty spots. Have phone numbers available of club leaders in event of problems. FAIR Display proper signage both inside and outside the booth including a thank you to sponsors. Responsible for opening (7:30 a.m.) and closing (approximately 10:30 p.m.) the Food Booth each day. The booth must remain open until Rodeo events end. Replenish supplies as needed. Be present at each shift change and orientate clubs on their duties and operation of the grill, fryer and money till. Enforce the set guidelines and rules in the Jerome County Job Description for 4-H Food Booth Workers. Contact any of the 4-H Leaders Association Officers or Jerome County Extension Office for any problems or questions that arise. Leave list of items ordered to be checked off upon delivery. Form that is signed by the delivery person as well as person receiving order. AFTER FAIR Return any supplies to the 4-H Leaders Association storage. Contact 4-H Leaders Association Treasurer for payment for a JOB WELL DONE. Attend September 4-H Leaders Association meeting to report any necessary information.
