D ear Eisenhower Family: I hope this edition of the newsletter finds you having enjoyed the last bit of summer and your Labor Day weekend. Registration at Eagle Days has come and gone, Fall sports have already begun and school is back in session! Our first day of school will be held on September 5 th. The Eisenhower Open House date is also set. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 14 th. The Open House program will begin in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 6:00 p.m. Following the general session in the PAC, parents will break out to walk their students schedules and visit teacher classrooms to hear an overview of the course. We hope to see you all on the 14 th. Now that school is in session, I want to remind everyone to please be careful at both school start and dismissal times. Students who drive to school should have gone through the process of obtaining a parking permit at registration. If you did not obtain a parking permit, please know that we have had communication with the surrounding neighborhood and the Shelby Township Police department and we are requesting that students not park in nearby subdivisions and walk to school. Under no circumstances should students be parking across 25 Mile Road and running across the street to get to school. This poses obvious safety risks with the amount of traffic on 25 Mile Road. Please be safe and make good decisions. In keeping with the message of the importance of student safety and well-being, I want to share with the community that our administrative team will be focusing on the safety risks Vaping poses for students. Working in conjunction with the Shelby Township ordinance that was passed in June our team will take steps to ensure that Eisenhower continues to be a safe environment conducive to learning. We will be having conversations with students about this important issue and reiterating our expectations, UCS policy and the student handbook, the ordinance and consequences. Any student using or in possession of vape or other e-cigarette technology should assume that it will be treated as drug paraphernalia and will be subject to citation per the laws and ordinances of Shelby Township as well as disciplinary action from the school. I know that student safety is also a priority of yours. Together we can work together to help our students make good decisions for themselves and their futures. This school year has brought some transition and change for Eisenhower. In our last newsletter I introduced to you Mr. John Bertich as your new Athletic Director. At this time I would like to introduce Mrs. Kimberly Hodsdon who will serve as one of Eisenhower s Associate Principals working with students with last names A G. Mrs. Hodsdon is a wonderful addition to the Ike family. We appreciate the service of Mr. Enne and we wish him the best in his new role as Associate Principal at Stevenson High School. We also welcome some new teaching staff to the building this year in part due to the retirement of Mr. Wilk and Mr. Copacia. Both gentlemen brought closure to their celebrated careers as teachers and we thank them for their years of service and dedication to the Eisenhower community. Please read further on in the newsletter for the introduction of new Eagle staff. As a reminder, you may have heard that the high school bell schedule has been slightly modified for the upcoming school year to meet legislative requirement for instructional time. Three (3) minutes have been added to the school day with our new dismissal time scheduled for 2:14 p.m. The new bell schedule for the school day can be found further in the newsletter on page 5. We ask that parents use the Parent Portal on PowerSchool to help monitor their student s progress and attendance. PowerSchool information can be found on the Eisenhower website under the Parents and My EHS tabs. It is important that every parent log in and use PowerSchool. If you have difficulty logging in please contact the main office. Start the year strong Eagles! We are excited to see you all back in the hallways here at Ike! Jared A. McEvoy, Principal

6 CROSSWALK ON 25 MILE & PARKING PERMIT USING THE CROSSWALK ON 25 MILE ROAD PLEASE be careful! Students crossing 25 Mile Road to get to and from school should do so at a designated crosswalk. Additionally, students who drive to school must have an Eisenhower parking pass and park in the lot. Students should not be parking on the streets in surrounding neighborhoods. WHO CAN PURCHASE A PARKING PERMIT? 12 th graders may purchase a parking permit. 11 th graders may purchase a parking permit only after seniors, and if they meet the criteria. Wait for announcement! EMERGENCY PARKING PERMITS The only reason an emergency permit will be issued to an 11 th grader is to help with a teacher, appointment or funeral. ALL emergency parking permits must be set up 24 hours or more on advance by the STUDENT with Mr. May, Associate Principal. No emergency permits for: Walkers, sports, parents on vacation, parents who are divorced, and students who have visitation out of district or out of district students. 10 th graders may not drive at any time! FOOD SERVICE INFORMATION BREAKFAST IS SERVED! A healthy, nutritious breakfast is a critical ingredient to the success of our students. Studies have shown that eating breakfast significantly improves student achievement. To help our students succeed, the school breakfast program is available in all of our schools. Healthy choices include cereal, whole-grain breakfast bars, yogurt, fruit and milk in the elementary buildings. Those choices, along with fresh-made hot breakfast sandwiches and other favorites are featured in the secondary buildings. Fresh-made fruit smoothies are also available in the high schools. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria prior to the start of the school day. For menu information and serving times at your student s school, please visit or download the new app by searching Utica Community Schools at the App Store or Google Play. FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICE MEAL POLICY A new meal charging policy is in effect this year in an effort to provide clear and consistent meal account procedures, including the charging of meals and handling and disposition of negative meal balances. When a student meal charge creates a negative balance, prompt repayment is expected. To bring the meal account up to date, families can make deposits online, send cash or a check to school with the student s full name on the memo line (checks made payable to Utica Community Schools). By establishing an account with sendmoneytoschool.com through the food and nutrition service link on the district website ( or app, families/parents can monitor balances and receive low balance alerts on their students account. Students who pay for meals may only charge (have a negative account balance) up to five (5) meals (breakfast and/or lunch). If a student has a zero or negative account balance, they will not be allowed to make any a la carte or beverage purchases. After the fifth charge, students will not be able to make purchases of any kind in the cafeteria using their meal accounts. Instead students will be offered a regular meal (alternate meal). Alternate meals are provided at no charge and include all the components federally required to qualify for a reimbursable meal. Alternate meals will continue to be offered while the negative balance is being resolved. For elementary school households, auto-messages from the school regarding negative/low balances are initiated weekly each Thursday (by if provided or letter sent home). When an account balance is low or negative, cashiers will share that information with the student in a respectful ageappropriate manner. Please contact the Food and Nutrition Services Department at for further assistance. Page SCHOOL MEAL PRICES HAVE NOT CHANGED. THE PRICES ARE: Meal Prices Lunch $2.95 Breakfast $1.75

11 MI STUDENT AID SCHOLARSHIPS: APPLY & WIN Applying for scholarships can feel like an incredibly daunting task on top of everything else that goes with preparing for college; however, in the long run, the hours spent applying for scholarships can save a person from thousands of dollars of debt. Time Magazine released some tips on how to win scholarships earlier this year and we ve picked a couple of our favorites, along with some tips and tricks of our own. APPLY FOR LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS Local scholarships provide the best odds due to the fact that they are open to a smaller group of students. Many of these local scholarships are provided through the community foundation in your county; check with teachers, guidance counselors, and even Google to track down the best scholarships that could be right in your hometown. Our customer care unit is available to help students with their search too. With a simple phone call to GRANTS, our team will look-up scholarships based on where you live and what your interests are. KNOW WHERE TO LOOK Do you know the main sources of financial aid? Federal and state government, colleges/universities, and private entities provide a majority of the financial aid in the US. Now, these are not all scholarships, which is why it is important to do your research because most financial aid is awarded based on the FAFSA, private scholarships are not. When looking for scholarships, start local and work your way outward. Search your church Web site, community portals, TV and radio station Web sites, small businesses, and benefactors; when it comes to hunting down free money, leave no rock un-turned. You never know who is willing to give out a scholarship until you start looking! GET PERSONAL Think about it, everyone has an attribute that sets them apart from the rest of the world. Are you abnormally tall? Lefthanded? Vegetarian? Been in a car crash? Many people and institutions give out scholarships for unique qualities because it means you have a story to tell and a different perspective to bring into the world. Take some time to think about anything that could make you unique and do some research, you never know what money could be out there for you! PROOFREAD This may seem like a no brainer, but a reminder to proofread that essay could be the difference between your essay getting read or thrown out. Read your essay out loud, this is a good way for you to really be able to listen to how your essay would sound to someone else. Your brain has a way of fixing errors for you when you read in your head, which makes reading out loud to yourself or to your parents a great method to correct any errors. Alleviating grammatical errors ahead of time allows the reviewer to concentrate on the content of your essay without being distracted by mistakes. MEET THE REQUIREMENTS Take a look at everything that you need for the scholarship application, some scholarships need more than just an essay, you might also need to provide a copy of your resume. It is important to make sure that your resume details your experiences with community involvement, such as community service, any clubs or organizations, or even general volunteer experience. Being able to show that you can give back to the community makes scholarship donors more likely to give their money to you. *Source: Unigo Contact MI Student Aid at GRANTS (888) to help you with your scholarship search! 15 ATTENDANCE ATTENDANCE LINE FAQS How can I leave a message about my student s daily attendance? Please call the attendance line at Follow the numeric prompts to leave a request for an early dismissal or an all-day absence. How often is the attendance line checked? The attendance line is checked constantly during the school day. Do I need to call the school to verify that the call went through? It is not necessary to call the school to verify. You can verify at the end of the day using your student s PowerSchool account. When will the request be logged in PowerSchool? All calls will be logged in your student s PowerSchool account by the end of the school s office hours (3:30 p.m.) on the day the request is made. If you do not see it logged right away after your call, we would appreciate your patience, as it may take several hours from the time the call is placed. Why does it take so long to see a late arrival logged in my student s PowerSchool? Late arriving students and students returning from an early dismissal need to sign in when they arrive in the main office. Typically, late arrivals are the last thing to be put in to PowerSchool at the end of the day, after verifying on the sign-in sheet. What if I left a message and the request wasn t put in? If request hasn t been fulfilled by the following day, please call the school office and let them know. They would be more than happy to remedy that for you. CREDIT REVIEW No credit (NC) on a report card is a direct result of unexcused absences. The process of loss of credit begins with credit review. Students are reminded that at three unexcused absences (suspensions/skips, etc.) a student is put on credit review. If unexcused absences persist, a potential loss of credit can result even if academically passing the class. The following guidelines are implemented on a semester basis. Parents will be notified of unexcused absences. In order to receive credit in a class, two criteria must be met: Passing grades Acceptable attendance A student will be placed on credit review in one of the following ways and the parent/guardian will be notified: 1. Any student who accumulates three (3) unexcused absences in a class in a semester. 2. Any student absent from a class more than seven (7) times in a semester if the eighth or any subsequent absence is unexcused. 3. Any student who accumulates fifteen (15) excused absences from school will be placed on credit review in all classes. A student who is placed on credit review in a class will be expected to show improved attendance in that class for the remainder of the semester. Any student who is placed on credit review status in any class will have his/her parking privileges reviewed with possible loss of that privilege for five weeks. At the end of the semester, a final determination regarding credit will be made after an administrative review of the student s attendance, and one of the following will happen: 1. The student will receive the letter grade earned in the class if the administrative review determines the student has fulfilled all class requirements and attendance has improved. 2. The student will receive no credit (NC) if the administrative review shows attendance did not improve. 3. An F will be given if a student failed the class. TARDINESS 1.
