School is in recess for Spring Break from March 30 th through April 6 th with school resuming on Monday, April 9 th. The new month also brings with it the close of the 3 rd quarter marking period which ends on April 13 th leaving just a mere 10 weeks of school left. That being said, it is important as ever that our Eagle students stay focused on their learning. Also coming with the month of April is this year s standardized assessments. Important reminders for juniors: The first portions of the MME, which are the SAT and Work Keys tests, will be given the week we return from Spring Break. Testing will run Tuesday, April 10 th and Wednesday, April 11 th. The M-Step portion of the test will be April 17 th and 18 th. This test is a graduation requirement for UCS. Important reminder for sophomores: Sophomores will take the PSAT test on Wednesday, April 12 th. Hopefully you have received communications with the schedule for both April 10 th and 11 th as well as transportation information. That information can also be found on the next page of this newsletter. Students have been well prepared and I just know they will continue to demonstrate what it means to be an Eisenhower Eagle. All we can ask is that each Eisenhower student does their personal best! As our students return form break please continue to emphasize the importance of being in school every day and on time with your sons and daughters. Attendance is crucial as learning cannot take place if you aren t in school! If you find that your student is ill please be sure to call them in to the attendance hotline, ensure they get lots of rest, and return to school as soon as possible. Important reminders for seniors: SENIORS-FINISH STRONG! Colleges remind seniors that admission next fall is contingent upon successful completion of this senior year. Many seniors have already been accepted into college, attended an orientation and have a dorm room assignment. Seniors fail to believe that their admission can be rescinded if their grade point drops. However, a high school senior is not fully admitted until their second semester transcripts are received. If a student s grade point dips below the requirement, admission could be withdrawn. The senior year of high school should be used to prepare for their upcoming freshman year of college. It is the student s responsibility to stay focused and avoid senioritis that could lead to lower grades. Senior/Parent meetings are being held on April 17 th and April 18 th from 6:00 7:30 p.m. in the Eisenhower Performing Arts Center (PAC). Please choose from either date to attend. Senior Honor s Night will be Tuesday, May 29 th in the PAC. Invitations will be sent to the homes of those students that will be recognized. Graduation will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, Mandatory practice for seniors at the DTE Energy Music Theater will be Tuesday, June 5 th at 7:30 a.m. Please be sure seniors do not schedule college visits or work for that morning as practice is mandatory if your senior wants to participate in the graduation ceremony. Important reminders for all parents and students: DATE CHANGE The April Parent Sounding Board meeting has been rescheduled to Friday, April 20 th due to M Step testing. Take the opportunity to visit the UCS College Fair. It will be held Wednesday, April 18 th at Henry Ford II High School from 6:00 7:30 p.m school year scheduling is underway. Student course requests have been collected and Eisenhower s expectation continues to be that every student will pursue some type of post-high school educational endeavor. We encourage all students to truly explore course offerings, find something they are passionate about, and challenge themselves with a challenging course load. Spring Break is March 30 th April 6 th. Classes resume on Monday, April 9 th. Please help our students keep focused on academics and encourage our students to do their best all the way through June! Thank you so much and GO Eagles! Sincerely, Jared A. McEvoy Principal

11 WHAT S THE COST OF EDUCATING A CHILD? UTICA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS SUPPORTS COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON THE COST OF EDUCATING MICHIGAN STUDENTS Utica Community Schools has added its support to a statewide study aimed at changing the way Michigan schools are funded by state lawmakers. The Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to support the work of the School Finance Research Collaborative a bipartisan group of 22 top industry and education experts that is re-examining the approach to school funding in Michigan. The Collaborative addresses a question that our district has been asking for many years what is the real cost of educating a child in Michigan, said UCS Board of Education President Gene Klida. It is time for state lawmakers to recognize that the current funding system is broken and to support a funding system that recognizes each Michigan child has unique needs and interests. The resolution adopted by the Board of Education at its January 8 meeting notes: The study group is working with the nation s top two school finance research firms which have a proven ability to examine cost issues associated with key factors, including preschool, poverty, special education, Career and Technical Education, English Language Learners, at -risk students and schools that are geographically isolated. The School Finance Research Collaborative is a broad-based, diverse and bipartisan group of statewide business and education experts. The initiative is the first comprehensive school finance study that uses multiple data sources to determine the cost of educating a student in Michigan. The group s report will be the first statewide study that includes costs faced by charter schools. Under the current school funding system, the state of Michigan collects property and other taxes to support the school aid fund and redistributes these dollars to Michigan school districts. State lawmakers establish revenue levels for local school districts by setting a per-pupil foundation allowance. We have a funding system that is built on the premise that every child is the same. Nothing could be further from the truth, said UCS Board Trustee Denyeal Nesovski. The fact that our funding system does not appreciate the unique nature of every child is a disservice to Michigan families, particularly those with students who have disabilities. The Cost to Educate a Child was the focus of a recent effort in UCS to address the fiscal challenges faced by its community through the current funding formula. Information on the impact of the current school funding on UCS and letters from community and business groups to state lawmakers is available at: More information on the School Finance Research Collaborative is available at: The study group is scheduled to issue its report in early Page 11

15 CURRICULUM CORNER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CHEMISTRY CURRICULUM CORNER The Chemistry Department is excited to announce that we are part way through our first completely Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) unit. NGSS is a hands -on approach to science that integrates real world experiences with chemical phenomena. Students have conducted experiments, worked in groups, presented their findings on a whiteboard, shared out their models with the class, and have evaluated other s work. The emphasis of NGSS is learning to come to consensus and work together as a team to express ideas. Students have gained a deeper understanding of physical changes versus chemical reactions. Their productive talk and ability to communicate their ideas has also improved. The M-STEP test that Juniors will be taking in April will now contain NGSS standards. HELP ROOM Chemistry also offers help room ten times a week. Please visit ikechemistry.weebly.com for upcoming activities, videos, and help room schedule. They will be collecting them and giving them to our local Kiwanis Club for distribution in our community. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BOOSTERS The month of March truly epitomizes what the Eisenhower Instrumental Music program is all about! The month started off with MSBOA District Band Festival, with the Symphonic Band performing on March 8 th, and the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble both performing on March 9 th. These groups traveled to Anchor Bay High School where they each performed three different music selections. A panel of judges then graded and critiqued each ensemble on performance and sight-reading. Many months of practice and hard work culminated with high ratings for each group! We are so happy that each group earned a 1 st Division! March 17 th was MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble Festival, which took place at Chippewa Valley High School. Students that qualified from Districts voluntarily played solos and ensembles of their choice and were judged on stringent musical criteria. Congratulations to all these fine musicians! The Instrumental Music Department also strives to support the UCS Elementary and junior high music programs. The Elementary Cluster Concert was held in February and the Junior High Clinic Concert was held March 21 st. Both events were held in our beautiful Performing Arts Center and featured over 600 talented young musicians. The high school music department welcomes students and wants to encourage these fine young musicians to continue in their instrumental musical pursuits! Finally, on March 23 rd, Eisenhower hosted the MSBOA State Jazz Festival! Jazz bands from across the area played individually in the PAC, as well as our own talented Eisenhower Jazz Ensemble. At Utica Community Schools there are several ways parents can be informed about these unanticipated days. Utica Community Schools will implement the use of School Messenger, our mass parent communication system, to make telephone calls to parents/guardians informing them of school closing information.
