USS WALKE 2012 REUNION September 16-21, 2012 Holiday Inn & Suites Tucson Airport North WELCOME TO TUCSON, ARIZONA! Ah! beautiful sun-bathed Tucson. Pack your lightweight summer wear and plenty of sun screen. But bring a light jacket or sweater for inside times because they like to run the air conditioners at full speed. Tucson is located in the heart of southern Arizona in an area known as the Sonoran Desert. Its altitude is 2,389 feet and the metropolitan area covers about 500 square miles. There are five mountain ranges surrounding the city and there are three major dry river beds. I think you might find it pretty dry! Well, we'll let you wet your whistle in the Hospitality Room. So let's get right to it. Our hotel is the beautiful Holiday Inn & Suites, located not far from the Tucson Airport. I've included the hotel's website below so that you can see for yourself that we will have a great time in this hotel. The rooms are very nice with comfortable beds (double queens or single king for the same price). There is a huge outdoor pool for those who want to take a dip, and afterwards enjoy the hotel restaurant for dinner. Breakfast, by the way, is included in the cost of your room and is a sit-down, full service at the hotel restaurant. What a way to start your day. Our Hospitality Room will be about 1,500 square feet and right next to the hotel bar. I mention this because the liquor laws are such that we had to make a concession. The hotel will be providing beer and wine, at the same price as what we would pay at the base exchange package store, along with a well serviced bar. However, we can't have liquor in the Hospitality Room due to the laws. But with the hotel bar next door, you can purchase call drinks (at a special low price to us) and then bring it into the Hospitality Room! That works for me! The hotel has done a great job in meeting our needs, so let's go have fun. The hotel web site is:
DAY ONE, SEPTEMBER17 Our first activity is the Sonora Desert Museum Tour. The following is from the museum's website and I've included the website below that. "The Center for Sonoran Desert Studies conducts the educational and scientific functions of the Museum and is a hub for research, education and conservation of the Sonoran Desert Region. The Center's activities range from on-grounds and outreach education programs for school children and adults, to conducting ecological research in the Sonoran Desert region and advising museum staff, other conservation organizations, and the public on scientific and educational matters. The Center for Sonoran Desert Studies is characterized by: Interdisciplinary studies. Our staffhas expertise in educational outreach, botany, ethnobiology, paleobiology, ornithology, mammalogy, herpetology, invertebrate biology, ecology, anthropology, and earth sciences. Scientific accuracy and currency. All of our publications and educational programs are based on the latest, most accurate research data available. Collaboration with the people of Mexico in research, education, and conservation. About two-thirds of the land portion of the Sonoran Desert, and 75 percent of its biodiversity, reside in Mexico; the vast majority of species and habitats that the Museum works to understand and protect lie south of the border. Focus on whole-organism and community biology. Projects that promote habitat conservation. We recognize that fulfilling the Museum's mission of inspiring people to live in harmony with the natural world requires both a conservation ethic and timely, collaborative and well-informed action. Dedication to disseminating our knowledge to the public in nontechnical language. A variety of educational methods. Since we know people have many different learning styles and interests, we maximize our outreach by mixing different techniques like placebased learning, experiential and inquiry-based education, incorporation of live animals and natural artifacts, and attention to creating and encouraging life-long learners. " You can see more about this tour at the following: DAY TWO, SEPTEMBER18 We will make a trip south via motor coach to Ft. Huachuca in the morning and then on to Tombstone for lunch and a gunfight. I've included websites for both of these activities. Ft. Huachuca is home of the US Army Intelligence Center and Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM)/9 th Army Signal Command. It is also headquarters of Army Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS) and the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) and the Electronic Proving Ground (EPG). That's quite a mouth full of acronyms but we won't be tested
on any of that. The main attraction will be the Ft. Huachuca Museum. Here is a little history as presented on the website: "General History Fort Huachuca is a product of the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. In February 1877, Colonel August B. Kautz, commander of the Department of Arizona, ordered that a camp be established in the Huachuca Mountains. In 1886, General Nelson A. Miles designated Fort Huachuca as his advance headquarters and forward supply base for the Geronimo campaign. Geronimo's surrender in August 1886 practically ended the Apache danger in southern Arizona. The Army closed more than 50 camps andforts in the territory, but Fort Huachuca was retained because of continuing border troubles involving renegade Indians, Mexican bandits, and American outlaws and freebooters. In 1913, the 10th Cavalry "Buffalo Soldiers" arrived and remained almost 20 years. The 1Oth Cavalry joined General John J Pershing in the 1916 expedition into Mexico and, during World War 1, it was assigned the mission of guarding the United-States-Mexico border. By 1933, the 25th Infantry Regiment had replaced the 10th Cavalry as the main combat unit for the fort. The 25th, in turn, was absorbed by the 93rd Infantry Division during World War II When the 93rd departedfor the Pacific in 1943, the 92nd Infantry Division arrived at thefortfor training and subsequent assignment to the European Theater. During the war years, the troop strength reached 30,000 men at the fort, which in the 1930s had been described as suitable for a brigade-sized unit of about 10,000 men. At war's end, the fort was declared surplus and transferred to the State of Arizona. It was reactivated during the Korean War by the Army Engineers. A new era began in 1954 when control passed to the Chief Signal Officer, who found the area and climate ideal for testing electronic and communications equipment. In 1967, Fort Huachuca became the headquarters of the Us. Army Strategic Communications Command Then, in 1971, the post became the home of the Us. Army Intelligence Center and School, bringing with it the School Brigade. The Strategic Communications Command became the Us. Army Communications Command in 1973, subsequently changing to the Us. Army Information Systems Command in In October 1990, the post changed hands with the Us. Army Training and Doctrine Command became the new host command; the Us. Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca now operates the post. Today, Fort Huachuca is a major military installation in Arizona, and one of prominence throughout the Southwest. Historical Museum The fascinating history of the Us. Army in the Southwest, as well as the history of the Southwest itself, unfolds at the Fort Huachuca Historical Museum. Opened in 1960, the museum has grown rapidly and now houses one of the most representative collections in the state. The museum is one of some 500 in the country to be accredited by the American Association of Museums. The
exhibits are instructive, entertaining, and aesthetically satisfying. Some of the Us. Army manuscripts and documents, dating back as far as 1861, can tell the viewer a great deal about the way of life on a rugged frontier. " Here is the website: It is a little cumbersome because it is a military site and will caution you that you are entering a restricted area. Your computer may challenge you to not enter because there is no certificate. I have found it to be no problem. On to Tombstone...this is home to Jim Ellsberry, proprietor chow down on some mighty fine X pound burgers and fries. of Vogan's Alley, where we can At 2:00 pm we don't want to miss the gunslingin' at the OK Corral. Then we load up and come back to the hotel just in time for the Hospitality Room to open. Here's a website for Tombstone: DAY THREE, SEPTEMBER19 We will take a short trip to the Pima Air and Space Museum and the 309 AMARG to see lots and lots of airplanes. We'll spend the morning and early afternoon here, with lunch on your own. Then back to the hotel so you will have some time on your own to take in some other local sights. I've included some information from the Pima website, followed by the website itself. "Pima Air & Space Museum, where history takes flight, is one of the largest air and space museums in the world, and the largest non-government funded aviation museum. You'll see more than 300 aircraft and spacecraft including many of the most historically significant and technically advanced craft ever produced, both from the United States and throughout the world. The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG) is a one-of-a-kind specialized facility within the Air Force Materiel Command structure. 309 AMARG provides critical aerospace maintenance and regeneration capabilities for Joint and Allied/Coalition warfighters in support of global operations and agile combat support for a wide range of military operations." DAY FOUR, SEPTEMBER20 Today we will have our business meeting in the morning and then the rest of the day for individual exploration of Tucson. However, you need to be back for our banquet at the hotel which will start about 7:00 pm. I'm working with Senior Chief Kennedy at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC), the local Navy detachment at Davis Monthan AFB, to coordinate a Memorial Ceremony either at their center or at the hotel. His CO will be our guest speaker at the banquet. The Senior Chief says
his CO is a submariner, so we need to give him a hard time, since the WALKE was one of the "hunter/killers ofthe seas". Just kidding! DAY FIVE,SEPTEMBER21 We bid adieu until the 2013 reunion in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. ***************************************************************************** Now that you have the Plans of the Day f~r our reunion of the other particulars. in Tucson, I need to fill you in on some Pam Brown, of Gatherings Plus in Branson, and I have put this reunion together. Thank you Pam!
