2 Bring the Adams Home! MISSION STATEMENT Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association s mission statement is... To excite, inspire, educate and entertain the general public; to create a venue dedicated to the mission, memory and men of the Adams Class destroyers; and to distinguish and define the role of the Navy in securing and maintaining a free and safe world in which the United States stands as the vanguard for other countries to thrive. INTRODUCTION The vision of the former USS CHARLES F. ADAMS (DDG-2) being put on display as a Naval ship museum, representing the ADAMS class of guided missile destroyers, began with the sailors who served in these fine ships, but it has now also become the vision of many former Navy-men and numerous residents of the Jacksonville, Florida area. That vision sees a lasting and fitting memorial being established to honor all veterans, but especially paying tribute to the crews who served in this special class of warship. TOURISM The addition of a Naval ship museum onto the downtown Jacksonville riverfront area will produce significant benefits to the local tourism industry. Having an exciting, inspiring and compelling attraction such as the proposed ADAMS Class Museum would enhance downtown Jacksonville. The already existing Lone Sailor Monument on the Riverwalk, the Veterans Arena and Navy Memorial Wall would be complemented by the presence of the ADAMS Class Museum. In addition, there would be linkages and trickle down financial benefit to other local businesses, also referred to as the multiplier, from the increased visitor traffic to the ADAMS Class Museum. The partnerships that have been formed with the local downtown hotels, which are supporting the ADAMS Class Museum proposal, will provide additional tourist traffic as well as event patronage, to the Museum. These winwin partnerships between the ADAMS Class Museum and local business leaders are a key aspect of the financial plan. The fact that ADAMS will be bringing various Navy reunions groups to the downtown Jacksonville area shows how this will benefit the local hotels, and related businesses. 3 Bring the Excitement Back! EDUCATION The JHNSA would work closely with local elementary, middle, and high schools to afford the young people of the Jacksonville/North East Florida/South East Georgia the opportunity to come aboard ADAMS, and explore the histories, the displays, the high technology systems, and the interactive exhibits. The JHNSA has already put into place the foundation for a partnership with Duval County Public School (DCPS), enabling school groups visiting the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) the ability to visit ADAMS Museum during the same field trip under the same program. The JHNSA would partner with the local and regional Junior Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Units that exist in a number of high schools. The JHNSA and the ADAMS Museum would be an ideal place for their projects, their ceremonies, and camp-aboard events. The JHNSA would partner with Southeast Regional Boy Scout and Sea Scout organizations. The JHNSA would provide specific programs and make the ADAMS available for events like Camp Aboard weekends. A Narrated Guided tour exhibiting the ships equipment and their services. The ADAMS would provide a wonderful backdrop for the presentation of such subjects as Naval History, shipboard systems and the various high-technology weapons systems. We would make the ship available for ceremonies (commissioning, etc), and other NROTC events. Museum of Science and History walking distance to the proposed location of the Ship Museum. 5 WHY JACKSONVILLE? WHY NOW? Jacksonville has a long history with the Navy that continues to this day. 35 states in the nation have retired US Navy warship museums. None are in Florida or Georgia, despite over 1500 miles of coastline, tourist friendly weather, multiple Military bases and a plethora of other tourist drawing activities. A market study conducted by Keyser Marston, the same firm that evaluated the successful USS Midway Ship Museum in San Diego, CA, concluded the proposed ADAMS Class Museum should be financially viable. Many local organizations have already expressed written support for this project, (FL Secretary of State, FL Director of Veterans Affairs, Duval County Public Schools, Jacksonville area Boy Scouts, Jacksonville Sea Cadets, JU ROTC, Northeast FL and Southeast GA NJROTC units, and numerous veterans groups from around the country. Duval County Schools are very interested in having lessons on board. Place for Navy League Sea Cadets, Boy Scouts, High School NJROTC units, JU ROTC unit, and others to have events, ceremonies, training, camp aboard weekends, and lectures. The Museum will have interactive exhibits, ship tours, and show real life ship events (like battle scenario in Combat Information Center) which make the Museum very fun and memorable experience. Create fitting memorial honoring all military veterans, Ships of AD- AMS Class, Navy sailors, and be a place for Memorial Day, July 4th and Veterans Day ceremonies. As an event venue, it will be an exciting place to have meetings, dinners & social events with spectacular view of city and riverfront A Museum that remembers and educates visitors on the Cold War, how it was won, the sacrifices that were made to win it, and the reason why winning the Cold War was so important. An economic stimulus for downtown Jacksonville by attracting more visitors and dollars to the area. Honors the USS CHARLES F. ADAMS as lead ship of ADAMS class of guided missile destroyers, was the US Navy s first ship designed and built from the keel up as a guided missile ship and was stationed at Mayport for more than 20 years. She is the forerunner of today s high technology, computerized missile Navy; ADAMS is the last surviving ship of that class! JHNSA has not asked for any kind of funding from the city of Jacksonville! 6 MUSEUM CONCEPT The ADAMS Class Museum will be positioned to be the only regional ship museum using state-of-the-art technology in support of a Real Life Simulated Onboard Experience. All exhibits will be designed to demonstrate real life simulations, specific purposes, history and education. The ship museum intends to offer the following services to local, regional and international visitors: Narrated Guided Tour: Docent tours would lead groups of visitors around the ship pointing out what was being seen as the tour progressed. Questions could be answered about different types of equipment and the various services that were available on the ship. Looking into 5 /54 gun mounts, the ASROC Magazine, Radio Central and the Combat Information Center, could be explained by ADAMS Class Veterans who volunteered as docents. Self Guided Tour: For those visitors who chose to see the ship on their own, a recorded self-guided tour on DVD players will be available to take guests around the ship. Training films would show how the engineering plant was operated, the guns fired, and how submarines were tracked with ship s sonar, and where meals were served. Lone Sailor Monument by the Riverwalk at Downtown Jacksonville Combat Information Center (CIC) Simulation Guided Tour: Several videos of recreated scenes of typical incidents in the life of a guided missile destroyer crew will be shown and explained by volunteers/docents. Training films will be shown of weapons firings and anti-submarine warfare engagements to give a better understanding of the routine types of naval operations.
