2 And so spring has finally arrived and hopefully we can now complete prepping our boats for patrols and training and begin performing VE s. Unfortunately we do not have enough OPFAC S as we did in past years or even enough Coxswains and crew. I hope that with the new incoming members we can overcome this. We need MORE active participation by all members, and so pick up the phone and ask to be put on the Patrol list with the existing Coxswains that DO patrols. I encourage you to also, hook up with Hap and go with him on Patrol, as some of you may or may not know, he is not only a Coxswain but also an Aids to Navigation Verifier and a QE. Hap was a tremendous support last year in training several of us for recertification as Coxswains and crew and always enjoys looking to help train others. Another member Bill Unger (past Coxswain) and in the process being recertified is also an Aids Verifier, a great person to go on Patrol with. Bill, had a kayak /canoe business here in Georgetown and possess great knowledge of the surrounding waters, Winyah Bay and the five rivers and all its history is very proficient in chart plotting. We had a nice turnout at the Boat Shed affair; I made contact with several DNR people who do PR work and also, DNR person, Jim Lee, Education and Outreach Coordinator, Biologist, who gave a presentation on Yawkee South Island Reservation and can also do another 5 locations in the future. I invited him to speak and make a video presentation at one of our meetings; however he would like at least 20 people to make it all worthwhile. If not already, I encourage all our new and existing members to please consider becoming more involved with our flotilla and not just attend the monthly meeting and go home, but ask our FSO S, or myself what YOU can do to help support our efforts and help support our Station Georgetown. 3 Flotilla Meeting Wednesday, March 4, 2015 Meeting called to order by Ed Wozniak, Flotilla Commander. Hap James led the Pledge of Allegiance and Ed Wozniak gave the Invocation. A motion to approve the minutes of the February meeting was made by Kerry Williams and seconded by John Walton. The motion was passed. Finance Report: Sue Hastings gave the financial report. Flotilla Commander Comments: Ed Wozniak, Flotilla Commander, reported that the Year End Finance Report was completed and will be sent to Division. He has not received waiver for Mike Davis to take over FSO-FN position as of this date. Swear in Flotilla Staff Officers; Ed Wozniak swore in the 2015 FSOs in attendance Vice Flotilla Commander Comments: Hap James, Vice Flotilla Commander, asked how many members had taken APC (Administrative Procedures Course). He stated that members need to step up and take this on-line class. We need members who are able to become leaders in the Flotilla and take on more duties. Flotilla Staff Officer Reports: FSO-OP Hap James reported that the CG will be having 2-boat drills on Tuesdays and Thursdays and they need boats to tow. When we can go out on the water, we need crew and boats to help. Five members need their QE signoff this year. FSO-IS Sue Hastings reported that there is a new report on AuxInfo with the mandatory classes. She also will put on the back of roster sheet when updated. FSO-NS Bill Unger reported that they are establishing AOR for NS for the three Flotillas in Station Georgetown AOR. They can get orders to check ATONS. Bill will help any AVs with completing paperwork (7054/55). The new currency maintenance requirements for AVs are 4 Aids verifications and 2 bridges (one night and one day). FSO-PA Bill Unger passed around signup sheet for March 21 for booth at Boat Shed Open House. He reported that the Murrells Inlet Blessing of the Fleet will be coordinated by 12-4 this year. On May 21 for National Safe Boating Week the Mayor of Georgetown will be signing a proclamation. On June 20 there is a booth at Tara Hall but he is considering having 12-4 cover as several members of Flotilla are committed to another function. FSO-PV Karl Gettmann stated the Program Visitors need to do their visits. He also thanked Chuck Budnick for the wooden bins he made for the storage room. This will be a big help in keeping material together and make it easier to find when needed. FSO-VE Kerry Williams passed out decals and is working on setting up VE blitzes for next month. FSO-CM Chuck Budnick will be doing a training session on DSC radios. Page 3

4 Meeting Notes (Continued) Old Business: None New Business: None Training: Two Training Sessions Rick Bankert made a presentation on Public Affairs as part of his training for PA C-School that he recently attended Chuck Budnick presented a Power Point presentation on DHS radios. A motion was made by John Murphy and seconded by Kerry Williams and passed to adjourn at Respectfully submitted, Susan Hastings, Secretary Vice Flotilla Commander s Report: I will ask for a show of hands, who has enrolled in Aux Procedures in order to be a candidate for elected office. Remember the eight mandatory on line courses we must take. And, I will go over proper wearing of the uniforms, Tropical Blue, Long and ODU and Summer Boat Crew. Each member needs to check the manual to be sure you are in proper uniform. We will discuss uniforms for VE. You are responsible for your appearance. Neat pressed shirt and trousers with proper insignias. Hap James Page 4

5 FLOTILLA STAFF OFFICER REPORTS Information Services - Sue Hastings, FSO-IS The 1 st quarter of the year has ended and I need any 7029 hours and other missions that you may have completed. It is important to submit these as soon as a mission is completed and your 7029 s 99 hours should be sent in at end of each month. Materials Karin Hollar, FSO-MA Should you need materials to support NSBW and other programs it is time to get those orders in to ANSC. In the last two orders that I have placed, the Children Coloring Books have been stock out. I will keep including the books every time I place an order. Please send me any requests for materials as stock outs will likely increase as we get closer to summer. Let me know if you need stamps or envelopes prior to our April 1 meeting. Member Training Reggie Hollar, FSO-MT Although it may not feel like it now, spring has officially begun. In less than two months, National Safe boating Week will be observed. The dates for this very important event are May 16 through May 22, Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary are blessed with a wealth of training opportunities. The training classes are generally on line and are free. One opportunity that is greatly neglected is attending our ABS and BS&S Classes. Materials covered by our qualified instructors will not only refresh our memories but will also train us on new subjects. It is almost a guarantee that when you attend one of the classes you will learn something new or be refreshed on something that had been forgotten. Our classes are free to members and it makes a lasting impression on the students attending when that see a good number of decked out Auxilarist attending and assisting. During breaks, an opportunity to mingle is open to possibly recruit new members, talk about boating safety or just general talk. Our next ABS Class will be at Coast Guard Station Georgetown on April 25. Come on out and sit in on the class. You will be glad that you did. Page 5

6 The Crow s Nest SCG Auxiliary Flotilla April 2015 FLOTILLA STAFF OFFICER REPORTS (Continued) Operations Hap James, FSO-OP Be sure your facility is ready and put in orders for patrol. Easter is this coming Sunday and if the weather cooperates, there will be lots of boats out, probably for the first time this season. Check out your radio with SEA-TOW Ch. 26 or 27 (not USCG unless you are on orders). Water temperature is above 50 deg but below 60 deg so you will have to have Mustang suits...check with station to determine if they must be worn or just on board. If you are going out, put in for orders ASAP. Most traffic will be on ICW North Public Education Vito Giardina, FSO-PE We are scheduling an ABS class for Saturday, 4/25. Please join in if you can. Students who complete this course will be awarded the SC DNR Boaters Education Card.
