1 Official Newsletter of Flotilla 22, Ithaca, NY: News & Views May/June 2016 From the Helm, Gene Little, FC I am probably old school in that I still think of the CGAUX as having 4 Pillars Public Education, Vessel Safety (equipment) Checks (VSCs), Operations, and Fellowship. I am extremely pleased with the progress we are making this year with regard to the second Pillar VSCs. On May 21, Bo Stevens joined me up in Oswego for the H.L. White Museum Open House and got his first grounding and experience in actually doing two VSCs. Then on Saturday, 5/28, Flotilla 2-2 had its first VSC Blitz in years at Allan H. Treman State Marine Park. We completed 10 inspections at Treman, and completed the training requirements to get 3 new Vessel Examiners (VEs) qualified. Congratulations to Bo Stevens, Kim Walsh and John Frieman, our newly qualified VEs--Welcome aboard! Left picture: Dave & Gene in front of signup up station; Right picture: Gene, Bo and Kim; Photos courtesy Jennifer Watson The Allan H Treman Marina Blitz accomplished a lot more than educating the Recreational Boating patrons on safety equipment and getting three new VEs qualified. First, it got us Public Awareness and highly visible exposure in a popular Ithaca marina. Secondly, the Park management were so impressed with the marina patron participation and feedback, they requested we consider running a Boating Safety event. So, Saturday, July 9, we will be hosting the following Water Safety event: 9:00 AM with Coastie as the moderator and educator, we will educate the youth on boating safety and also address life jackets with the parents--who needs them, choosing the correct size, etc. We may throw in knots as well, if the Ship #25 Scouts are able to assist. 10:00 AM aboard the Avatar, we will have a joint (Power Squadron, Sea Grant and CGAUX) training session we are calling Suddenly in Command. We will have a hands-on demonstration of safety equipment for the significant other / First mate and talk though the steps necessary if they find themselves suddenly in command. 11:00 AM - Paddle Craft Safety -canoe/kayak/sup to be led by Jennifer Miller, who is ACA Instructor certified.

2 1:00 PM we will start with how to set off a flare and then transition to the Ithaca Fire Department (IFD) to demonstrate how to put out a fire with a fire extinguisher. The IFD will also be holding tours of their Fire Boat. Dave C suggests, and I agree, we should have a facility at the park as well! 3:00 PM we will hold another session on Suddenly in Command I would note that we held a VSC Blitz at Myers Park in Lansing on Saturday, 6/25, and have another one planned for Treman on Saturday, 7/2. I would submit that Flotilla 22 is on target and continues to accomplish our mission, as assigned by the CG, of promoting and improving Recreational Boating Safety education. Bravo Zulu 22! Secretary s Report: approved Treasurer s Report (FSO- FN David Cornelius): approved Division Report / Discussion: Need volunteers to assist in the annual inspection of equipment at Station Oswego. Annual Inspections of equipment etc. Carlton Cole and John Frieman agreed to take on this role. Need this so training can commence

3 Need an FSO for Diversity No additional information at this time but an 8hr training course is in development FSO will be required to maintain a Flotilla No volunteer at this time Staff Officer Reports (Negative reports omitted): FSO-MA (Bodge): Forms are on their way to Gene. There is a back supply FSO-PA (Gene): Paper s attitude was pretty good but not what Gene had submitted. FSO-PE (Walt): Set for ABS on May 14&15 and June 11&12, Books purchased, 20 are currently on loan for a total of 40 FSO-HR (Bo): Angie s form is in process There are 4 or 5 prospects at this time o Follow-ups: Gene will follow up with Jennifer, and Tom E will follow up with Paula. Photo IDs o Two members need to renew theirs, and several new members need new photos o Bo expects to be better looking in 3 months o There was some question about the required uniform FSO-PV (Gene): Finger Lakes Marina wants to have an open house in mid-june. 4 Division Report/ Ops meeting (IPC Robert Scheelein): Several members in need of PPE. Request has been sent on to Jason Gwiazdzinski. Several dates are available for equipment to be distributed. A notice will be sent out. All Classes (NIMS TCT etc.) must be completed prior to receiving equipment. Discussion on water exercises and training. For further details see Div. Report sent via . Staff Officer Reports (Negative reports omitted): FSO-OP (Thomas Every): Operations are off to a slow start due to facility problems. Don s boat will be available at Finger Lakes Marina in Lansing. Suggested we postpone the tabletop SAR Exercise to 6/27 and focus on crew training and getting boats out on the water. More training dates and information will be announced. All kinds of events going on in Onondoga Lake. If anyone is interested in helping out contact Rick Kuntz. FSO-MT (Walter Robinson): Mandatory Training needs to be completed. If you haven t completed it, get on it. FSO-MA (Henry Bodge Hyatt): VSC pamphlets are back ordered. Could be here in about a week. FSO-PA (Gene Little): See memo sent; Dewitt Park Memorial Day well attended. FSO-PE (Walter Robinson): KIm and Kevin Walsh will be teaching the upcoming class; still have 2 more classes scheduled. People are bringing their children to the classes and we are doing better than expected. FSO-HR (Vinton Bo Stevens): 6 new member applications are in; unsure about status of 2 potential members, interviewing 1 other person. FSO-MS (Gene Little): The last VE operation held at Treman Marina was a success. They really appreciated our presence. FSO-VE (Mike Beeching): VE Operations are underway. VE Trainees are getting their VE s completed. Academy Admissions Officer (Dale Campbell): Had a great conversation with a guidance counselor, was at the Academy recently and spoke with the Chief about prep school. FC Old Business: Docks moved without incident. June Union Springs bass event; Sylvan Beach Steak Bake in September.
