2 From the Helm Mario Stagliano Flotilla Commander May Meeting Our next meeting will be Thursday May 4 at 7:30 PM (1930 Hrs.). Special guest speaker will be Carolina Farmer. She is on the Division staff and will be speaking on Diversity in the Auxiliary. Fourth Cornerstone/Fellowship Event Our next fellowship event will be on Thursday May 18, 6 PM at the Base. Sign-up with Marsha Marino so that we know how many are coming. Division Meeting - This month s Division meeting will be held on Tuesday May 16 at McVey House in Fort Lauderdale starting at 7 PM Safe Boating Week - The week of May 20 through the 26 has been designated as Safe Boating Week. We will have proclamations from the City of Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Current plan is to setup our booth at the Silver Palm Park launch ramp in Boca Raton on Saturday May 20, 2017 from 10 until 2 PM. We re looking for volunteers to staff the booth. Please coordinate with Rod Dillman. Hurricane Season - Hurricane season is almost upon us (June 1 thru November 30). The Division Captain will begin using Everbridge to communication with everyone in the division. To make Everbridge work effectively we need everyone s current contact phone and . Several weeks ago, I sent out a copy of the Flotilla roster and asked that everyone confirm their contact information and get back to me if it was NOT correct. If you have not reviewed the roster please take a few minutes to confirm your primary phone number and address. I ve included more details about Everbridge below. HUREX COAST GUARD HURRICANE EXERCISE - From May 15 thru May 19 District 7 will be conducting a simulated Rescue 21 tower outage. Each day of the exercise will simulate a different tower going down. Flotilla 36 will be participate using our new mobile VHF facility (see below) and our fixed mount radio room and antenna capability (called Boca Radio). On April 20 five members of our Flotilla participated in a test of the emergency radio net. We will have several additional tests. Anyone wishing to get involved should contact our FSO-CM Todd Greenstein ( ). New Members - We have three numbers who joined us in April. They are Kelly Furlong, Samantha Griffen and Maria Pia Tedeschi. Please take a minute and introduce yourself to them at the May meeting.

3 What is Everbridge? Everbridge is used by the Coast Guard as a broadcast mechanism to reach out quickly to distribute information to Auxiliary membership. With Everbridge we have the ability to select a Select Group of individuals such as Boat Crew, Coxswains, Instructors, or Flotilla Members and either send or solicit information from members. During Hurricane Season, which is rapidly approaching, Everbridge is used to reach out to ALL Auxiliary Personnel for accountability purposes. Why not use the Old Fashion Call Tree? well let me tell you why, the OLD Fashion Call Tree requires lead members to make individual phone calls to ALL members on their particular call tree. While this works, with Everbridge, we can reach out to the entire Division (356 members) at once! Everbridge also provides reports indicating when, you the member, was notified, how you the member was notified, and most importantly, when you the member responded to the notification. Everbridge may be selected to make contact via SMS (Text Message), Cell Phone Call, , Auxiliary , CG , Home Phone, etc. for most Informational broadcast we will use SMS and , for urgent notifications Everbridge will be configured to attempt to make contact through all available resources to the member as listed in AUXOFFICER, until YOU the Member responds accordingly. Cell Phone messages will display on your phone as: xxx. 411 for informational requests or broadcasts and 911 for emergency situations, simply answer the call, listen and respond as directed, failure to respond accordingly will cause Everbridge to continue to attempt to make contact. When responding do not add comments, they are unnecessary and result in Everbridge reporting an INVALID Response, nor will they result in you being removed from the list, contact is made according to the information you have provided in AUXDATA. Some points to keep in mind: 1. You joined a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the United States Coast Guard 2. The Auxiliary supports all missions of the Coast Guard, less military and law enforcement operations 3. As an Auxiliarist, you are a member of the Coast Guard Family 4. The Coast Guard has a history and tradition of looking after their own! 5. During Emergent Natural or Manmade disasters, the Coast Guard expects 100pct accountability of all Auxiliarist 6. Everbridge provides a nearly instantaneous method to reach out to mass groups of individuals immediately 7. Everbridge provides reports for all responses, non-responses 8. If You the Member fail to respond to Everbridge, your Flotilla Commander will be directed to reach out to locate you and ensure your safety, either in person or on the phone 9. Past disaster experience has shown that TEXT messages can typically get through the system when cell phones may not be working

Michael Byer Vice Flotilla Commander To all shipmates: We are heading into the Summer season and all the snow birds are leaving. I want to wish all of you who are heading up north a safe and healthy summer. The Everbridge system is now in effect. Please make sure when you receive a call or an that you respond. This is how they keep track of the auxiliary members. We have an empty position for the FSO VE and we need to fill it. I know the position is demanding but if anyone is interested please contact me at We have a division picnic coming up on April 29 th and we need volunteers. We also have a National Boating Week coming up, and we have to set up a booth at the Silver Palm Park. We need volunteers that will pass out literature and do VE s if necessary. I have VE stickers to pass out if any of you need them. Please remember to do your 7029 It is very important that we all get them in a timely manner. Thanks again!!!

5 IPFC Tom Thayer Greetings, fellow Auxiliarists!! Having read an advanced copy of Mario s Flotilla Commander report and knowing that it is several pages long, this will be rather brief. Carolina is scheduled to address our May 4 Flotilla Meeting to talk about the various aspects of Diversity. I believe that she is on the National Directorate and brings a wealth of experience on the all - encompassing subject. Please make an effort to attend. The next Flotilla Meeting is Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 1930 (7:30 P.M.) at our Marine Safety Center Base. I look forward to seeing all of you. 7 Jim Goldasich Operations Now that summer is nearly at hand, we will have more opportunities to spend time on the water. This includes the important aspect of CREW training exercises. While Flotilla 36 may not currently have any active classes, there are often other Flotillas that may have classes that are open to anyone. Training activities are also included in the Division meetings held at Station Ft. Lauderdale, or at the McVey house in Ft. Lauderdale. The point is that we would love to see more of our Flotilla 36 members active in the CREW training and associated classes. Included with this article once again are the links to the CREW Manual and the PQS directives to attain the CREW classification. In the meantime, there are a few things that all prospective CREW members can be doing, that is to take the required courses that are available online or during the normal Flotilla meetings. These courses are as follows: 1 Hour TCT (Team Coordination Training) Refresher Workshop (Required Annually), 4/8 Hour TCT Training Workshop (Required every five years), ICS-700 Introduction to National Incident Management System (One Time Requirement), ICS-100 Introduction to ICS, On-line (One Time Requirement), Required CREW Classes, QE, For your information and use please find the web sites for CREW training and for the PQS: CREW MANUAL: CREW PQS: Both of these documents will provide valuable initial training information for your move into CREW Operational status and if you have questions, ask anyone of the Staff Officers for help. 8 Liliane Meghabghab Navigation Services NO REPORT Andrea Rutherfoord Public Education Thank you to the instructors for our April 1 ABS class: Steve Grevemeyer, Mario Stagliano, and Jim Goldasich. Also thank you to aid, Duncan Ferguson and Rob Lambie. We had 16 students (5 teens) at the class. Our next classes are May 6, followed by June 3. If you are interested in becoming an instructor, please contact me about how to get started. We need you! National Safe Boating Week. May 20-27, 2017, is a week where the USCG Auxiliary and other marine safety organizations join together to emphasize boating safety as the boating season starts up in the northern states. We are looking for a location to hold an on-site Suddenly in Command class, possibly a condo association or boat club. Let me know if you have suggestions. The theme this year is Wear It, reminding boaters of the importance of wearing life jackets. Debbie Davis Program Visitor FSO-PV@AUX.BOCA.ORG For those members who do not already know about the program, the Public Visitor (PV) Program is a part of the USCG Auxiliary Recreational Boating Safety mission. The PV program is designed to provide the general public with the most current boating safety information and to establish a point of contact for boaters interested in boating safety. Businesses such as marine dealers, marine stores, dive shops, marinas, libraries, nautical stores, etc. in turn, can provide their customers with boating safety literature, information on Courtesy Vessel Safety Checks, and the location of public education courses. Monthly visitations provide an informative interaction between the USCG Auxiliary, businesses and the boating public. If you are interested in becoming a Public Visitor representing USCG Auxiliary 3-6, please contact me for assistance.

9 Barry Ruchowitz I would like to thank you for your support and participation with Flotilla 36. As a team, we support DHS, the Coast Guard, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is really more than that this is our way of giving back to the government, military, and the boating community. We build our annual Flotilla budget based on your dues and other income. Please check with the roster to make sure your personal information is still correct phone numbers, address, and mailing address. If items have changed, contact Lynn Sauerwein with the updated information. Todd Greenstein FSO-CM NO REPORT Ron Dillman FSO-PA fso-pa@cgauxboca.org Greetings Shipmates! Summertime is here and a lot of events are coming our way so stay tuned. So, as a lot of you know, I used to be a bridge tender at Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach, and until January of this year, I was at The Boca Inlet Bridge in Boca Raton. What I want to do is share with you some of what a bridge tender does. First off, there is a lengthy background check before he/she ever gets to the bridge. That process can take up to a month to complete. Then, once they are hired, they then get an employee number. An assignment to a bridge is then given depending on the openings available at the time. The training program then starts by the supervisors. The very first day, the trainee only observes, he does not operate the console. He goes through 32 hours of training that week, both daytime and nighttime. During this time, the bridge tender on duty will train and guide the new operator. On the final day of training, The Safety Inspector will arrive to give the trainee a 50 question, multiple-choice written test. Upon successful completion of that test, the Safety Inspector will then observe the trainee operating the bridge, as well as opening and closing the bridge. After a review of the trainee s performance, they are then given a certification to operate that particular bridge. Please, let me remind you, that this is a procedure protocol for bridges operated that cross the state of Florida roadways. The counties have their own rules and regulations, which is why you, as a boat operator, hear announcements over Channel 9 from some bridges and not others. That s all for now, I ll have more for you next month about bridge tending and a lot more. HAVE FUN

16 Has your Auxiliary member ID card expired? Once a year, check the expiration date on your member ID card. The card is valid for 5 years. When it s time to get a new card, you initiate the process. If it s within a few months of expiration, or has already expired: 1. Tell the FC or VFC that you need a renewed ID card. They can help you get started. 2. Have your picture taken in the office (red background, uniform shirt). Zoom in so only your head with the red background is showing. 3. In an , send the picture to the FC. Also provide the current information on the back of your card: Height (inches), weight, eye color, hair color, blood type, date of birth, and ID number. The FC will submit your photo and information into the system. In a few weeks, the new card will be sent to the FC, who will have it at meetings. Bring your old card to swap out for the new card. Note: If you present an expired card at the gate of a military base, you will not be allowed entry and your card might even be confiscated.
