Come for the Boating Education..Stay for the Friends SM This is the tag line on the United States Power Squadrons national web page. Sounds a little corny doesn t it? But I ve found it to be absolutely true. As you progress through the Power Squadron University, you build a network of like minded friends, both fellow students and instructors. If you fish, they become your fishing buddies or they volunteer to crew for you when you really need some help. As it turns out, the squadron provides a sense of belonging, a bond if you will, between fellow boaters. If you hang with the squadron, sooner or later you meet people from other squadrons. Through the District and the National Organizations, the bonding process starts again. Some of us found after Katrina, these bonds can continue long after the boats are gone. It has been my experience with the District and National organizations that they are run by good guys who love boating and have a sense of bonding commitment to the power squadron. Once in a while you meet an exceptionally good guy who has strong bonds throughout the power squadron. These few distinguish themselves with their service, their commitment and their gracious respect to all. P/D/C Robbie Jarrell, AP If you will they are true by Cdr Greg Deis, SN-CN gentlemen. Not all Squadrons are so lucky as to have such an exceptional member. New Orleans recently lost one of our Gentlemen Members with the passing of Robbie Jarrell. He had been a member of the New Orleans Power Squadron for 30 years, and was a Past Squadron Commander as well as Past District Commander. He was a friend, a mentor, a counselor, teacher, and not to be overlooked, a fine fried fish cook. With Robbie s passing our bonds throughout the power squadron are a little weaker. Robbie, you will be missed. And now from Cheryl: For the last 30 years, Robbie has been saying that when he was gone, he didn't want a memorial service, he wanted a party! With that in mind, I am throwing a party to celebrate his life. Please join us on Sunday, June 5 from 2-7pm at our home near City Park. Come for the entire What's Inside time, or just stop by for Fishing Trip - 2 a short visit. Food and drink will be provided. 5 Flotsam and Jetsam Let it be known that Jim and Sue Kuemmel have become homeless wanderers again by casting off all mooring lines and sticking the "pointy end" of our boat towards the rising sun to begin our cruising this season. Our plans are to visit the Florida Keys and the northern Bahamas, but as always, our plans are written in the sand at low tide. If you're up late some night, and want something to put you to sleep quickly, you might check our blog to see what we're up to: Deck Ape Jim Admiral (& Senior Galley Wench) Sue LPBF SPRING BEACH SWEEP We met at the trailer at 0900 on a clear sunny windy April 2 day. We had nine people and collected over 20 bags of trash, including two hypodermic syringes. Cdr Greg Deis cut up part of a dock that had drifted up on our property. A LPBF staff member photographed the group. Afterward we enjoyed the LPBF picnic at the Lighthouse. Thanks to Tim Hirsch, Rochelle Hirsch, Lynn Greco, Jane Morley (Lynn s mother), Richard Mashburne, Greg Deis, Pete Lang and Lila Beyer for their help on the clean-up. Changes on Conditions for Vessels Entering the U.S. From Cuba. The following has been excerpted from the Federal Register/Vol. 81, No. 55T dated Tuesday, 22 March 2016: The United States Coast Guard has announced that it is removing the conditions of entry on vessels arriving from the Republic of Cuba. The policy announced in this notice is effective on 22 March USPS members interested in additional detail may access the appropriate issue of the Federal Register. Background and Purpose: On April 4, 2008 the Coast Guard published a Notice of Policy in the Federal Register, (73 FR 18546), announcing that it had determined that ports in the Republic of Cuba were not maintaining effective anti-terrorism measures, and imposed conditions of entry. Based on port assessments conducted in February 2016, the Coast Guard has determined that the Republic of Cuba is now maintaining effective anti-terrorism measures, and is accordingly removing the conditions of entry announced in the previously published Notice of Policy. Notwithstanding this Notice, the Unauthorized Entry into Cuban Territorial Waters regulations located at 33 CFR part 107 remain in effect. NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK May Pittsburgh Governing Board The 2016 USPS Governing Board Meeting will be held at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square from August. The hotel is right on the river with lots of restaurants within walking distance. The Rivers Casino is a free ride on the T. We have great tours, a boat ride and social activities planned. Enjoy seminars and great meals; renew friendships and make new ones. Come enjoy some fun with fellow boaters. Make your reservations now; the hotel is booking rapidly. It is with deep sadness that we are notifying our membership of the passing of P/C (and current Exec Officer) Brian Gautreaux, JN. He will be missed by family and friends. Arrangements will be sent out when they are finalized. Please keep his wife Lori in your prayers as she struggles with this loss. Squadron members, how can we get rid of Brian's 30 ft. Catalina? Engine does not work, P/C Brian Gautreaux, JN it will need to be towed. Anyone who tows it can have it. How do you get rid of a boat? I have no idea. The boat is at the dock at Brian and Lori's house in Slidell. It has not been used since it was moved from New Orleans Marina after Katrina. Because of the recent winds and weather it was taking on water. (Some electric and manual pumping has been done.) If anyone has any ideas, let Cheryl know. Thanks,

6 Educational Department News SEO Tracy Hamlin, N ASEO Charles Chapman, SN The New Orleans Power Squadron hosted a Knots, Bends and Hitches Seminar in March with 7 people attending. Mike Turner and Boy Scout Max Orlosky were the intructors. The Piloting course is finished and tested with 5 people passing. (One student will be retesting shortly.) Congratulations to the five new PILOTING grade members: Nanette Colomb, Ralph Richoux, Richard Mashburn, Valerie O'Conner and Martha Weil. Thanks to Chester Cooke, Piloting Instructor; Don Ellis as assistant instructor; and from Chester, thanks for all the assistance from our SEO Tracy Hamlin. Seamanship started Monday, April 25 with 6 people attending. Mike Turner is the instructor. Cruise and Cruise Planning is ongoing for the next 8 or 9 weeks. Liz Ann and Greg Mulvaney have been out on their boat for the last 2 years and have graciously agreed to teach this course. The next ABC test will be taught on two Saturdays, 18 and 25 June in Gretna. There will be no Seamanship taught after this class. The next Seamanship class will be taught after the fall ABC class. Finally, during our next General Membership Meeting on Thursday, 19 May, Michael Liebert will give a talk on Preparing your Vessel for a Tropical Storm. USPS News Blast for May 2016 Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season* the Chapmans' on Moonraker Lake Slidell, LA Friday, Saturday, Sunday May CheeseBurgers in Paradise* Big Burgers and Baked beans $15 per person It s that time of year once more, Cheeseburgers in Paradise held at 1459 Royal Palm Dr. in Clipper estates. We plan to have people arriving by boat earlier during the day with those driving, arriving around 3:00pm. On Friday evening we will have our usual bring your own, burn your own. Side items will be available to go with your personal carnivorous choices. Dessert followed by adult beverages and friendly conversation will follow. If needed, we will have the Vessel Safety Check team ready to check vessels. Saturday we will be around all day for those who have chosen to boat over, the hotel guests and anyone who wants to spend the day. Cheeseburgers will be served around 1:00 pm and will include BBQ beans, salad and dessert at a cost of $15.00 adult beverages will be consumed at your leisure and the band Overboard will begin around 6:30pm. By that time some of you will be hungry and leftovers from Friday evening & Saturday lunch will be served. Sunday as usual, Charlie & Chester will cook eggs. Bacon, grits and biscuits cooked by Sissy will round out the breakfast menu. Mimosas will be served and the cost for Sunday will be $5.00. Remember, bring your drinks and chairs as occasionally we run out of seating and if you plan to come by boat, text me or sonights@bellsouth. net with your request and power needs. Power is at a premium so reserve early. Dock space w/o power is ample. This is always a good time so plan to attend and if you feel like fishing, bring your bait and tackle. See you there.
